I actually never assumed we actually killed Zhaitan. I always thought we just forced him back into slumber. The Elder Dragons are magic incarnate, so killing one outright would destroy a sixth of the world’s magic (something I don’t think is even possible).
What about renaming this specialization to Nai-Draug? Draug is obviously a word for Dragon, and Nai sounds similar to ‘nigh,’ meaning near, or Close to. Judging from the skill Dragon’s Maw, this specialization must have absorbed some power from the dragons, making it Close to Dragons.
Well, there’s the above, and it’s completely backwards from how most of us envisioned how Guardians act.
Unfortunately, I actually rather like this idea, but using it for sarcastic purposes was just too tempting.
You didn’t read anything at all, did you. Anet never wanted to “have the Guardian’s sense of justice being perverted into blind vengeance” AT ALL, i have no idea where did you even get that.
They simply used their idea of a “big game hunter” and tried to make it fit the Guardian. That’s the problem of this whole thing.
Let me direct you towards:

To summarize, he states “the dragonhunter faction believes justice is the eradication of dragons and their minions.”
I believe it is you who needs to do more reading.
This once useful thread has devolved into two trolls screaming at each other.
Anyway, I understand where Anet was coming from, having the Guardian’s sense of justice being perverted into blind vengeance, but “Dragonhunter” seems so uninspired, not to mention futile. This specialization is supposed to be equipped to hunt down the Elder Dragons? With a bow and a couple traps?! I don’t see that as very likely, unless Bear-traps are Jormag’s secret weakness. Now, if the DH got a large bonus towards fighting Dragons and their minions (or an Asuran mega-laser LOL), that would change this entire discussion; they would be able to do something the other classes MECHANICALLY are unable to. But as of now, they’re just a tanky ranger.
People have referenced the Engineer’s Hobosacks debacle. While Anet eventually caved on that issue, I really don’t think that they will for DH. The ONLY dev response we have received on this issue is an adamant and mildly insulting defense of the theme.
That being said, I can still hope. A name change would go a long way to mend what I (and others) see as what could be a flaw in the lore.
PS: Oh, and top 3 name changes would be to Paragon, Warden, and Vanquisher.
Why didnt Anet gave necromancers name like Dark Guardians, because with specializations they got our 2 best GS skills, BB and WW. GG ! Give them spirit weapons too! They need it we dont xD
I seem to remember reading this exact post in another thread. While I somewhat agree, stating it multiple times doesn’t make you correct.
Also, if Guardians are Monks+Paragons, the DragonHunter spec seems to abandon the monk side of things (defensive magic, healing, etc). I honestly don’t expect Anet to respond to this issue again, but hopefully if we make enough noise, they’ll think about it before making decisions in the future.
If Dragon Hunter came with a +15% damage bonus against all dragon minions, then the name would make sense. There is no mechanical reason for the name, as opposed to Chronomancer, which actively controls time.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the GW1 Paragon class (as well as the Monk) were the most influential during development of the Guardian. Now, we get a long-range support specialization (sound familiar?)
The Paragon was a very specific class, with very specific flavor. Characterized as being Destiny-driven, Honor-bound, and Protective, they sought out and fought evil. Just imagine how Paragons would have reacted to the threat of the Elder Dragons. It seems to me like at least a few would have become… Dragon Hunters.
Fast forward to GW2, there’s no spear weapon (at least on land), and the Guardian can already use shields, so I’m happy with longbows being the weapon of choice. I rather like most of the skills/mechanics of the Dragon Hunter, but I have issue with the lore behind it. All characters in GW2 are dragon hunters; I find it equivalent to naming the Elementalist’s Spec simply ‘Mage.’ Frankly, it’s completely redundant. I realize ANet wanted to add some new flavor to the game, loosely based off of medieval witch hunters, but the term ‘Hunting’ is the opposite of ‘Guarding.’ Paragons, on the other hand, are established in the game lore and fit nearly perfectly into the role ANet was trying to create.
I understand many people don’t mind the name, or even care about the lore. These people wouldn’t care either way, but quite a few people actually DO care. I, being one of them.
