I found the source of the issue. It was the GIGABYTE OC GURU that came bundled with my gfx. Apparently the overlay loading causes the game to render incorrectly, and crash. This also happened with hawken, kerbal space program, and some situations in dark souls. I hope this information can help some players who might have been in the same situation, being unable to play some of their favourite games.
SHORT VERSION: Close any programs that might have graphical overlays, such as overclocking programs, etc.
No not exactly, if I crash I don’t see any screen at all, it just never loads any of the gw2 graphics, I have heard this latest patch solves some of those problems though, so here’s hoping for the best.
The programmers did say in the recent AMAA on reddit, that they have heard the community on the FOV thing, and they are looking into it, but apparently the process involves a bit more than just hacking in a slider. Take my words with a grain of salt as my memory tends to slip, but as far as I remember, that’s what they said, that they are working on it.

I’ve been trying to play gw2 for the past few days, but almost every time I launch (we’re talking 49/50 times) it crashes immediately.
When I can launch it successfully it runs perfectly, no crashes on zoning or anything else. It’s just almost impossible to launch. I’ve tried doing the black screen (nvidia) tip, I’ve set all nvidia settings to default, I’m not OC’ing, and I have not used any gfx hacks whatsoever. It started after I activated XMP in the bios, to make my ram run at 1600 as advertised, and it does so correctly, memtest+ gives no errors, I ran it twice to be sure. I even tried disabling XMP, to no avail.
Every other game and benchmark runs perfectly, but gw2 does just not want to launch. I hear the music though. I can only get a crash report if I run in windowed mode, which is attached here. If I run in fullscreen, it’s simply a black screen with the cursor being only thing I can see, and I have to ctrl-alt-delete and close the process.
I am using the latest nvidia drivers, running on a gigabyte gtx 670, corsair vengeance 2×4gb ram, and an i7 3770k. I have tried using -repair and even completely deleting all tmp, settings, and dat files, and reinstalling the game. Nothing seems to help the issue.
I really hope there’s a possible solution to this, I’d hate to miss the halloween event.
EDIT: Just after this post was made, I tried launching and yay! it worked perfectly! Then I closed the game, waited a bit, launched, and first thing that happens is more crashes on launch… It does seem to be quite random at best, and completely unplayable at worst.
