My struggle with thieves

I’ve given D/D a serious try now, and I tried builds both for high damage and one for high survivability. I die like a fly in both cases. I have totally given up hope on power/crit D/D.

As it looks now, power/crit S/P is the best I’ve tried after condi D/D – which isn’t good at 80. Thanks for the tip about auto attacking though, didn’t know that.

However whilst leveling (I’m around 70) autoattacking feels alot weaker. And extremely boring. Sigh. I don’t want to give up on my beautiful thief

Thank you both so much for replies! It really helps just to have someone point you to a build they like. Builds in GW2 are so unique and I find it hard to find one that works for me.

I’ll definetly check out the build linked!

I do PvE on s/p with shortbow alt

Sounds nice, but is the dmg really enough with mostly autoattack? I am amazed.

Hi. Thief is one of the very few classes I find really fun. But as I’m moving closer towards the end levels I would like to find a build that will fit me at 80. Also I’m stupid and don’t really get the essence of a build just by doing trial and error, or googling. I could use some talking and asking. To people. That answers me.

I mostly (like, only) do PVE. Farming, dungeons, events, living world.

What I have so far;
Condition damage + D/D death blossom is what I first got stuck with. It was super fun to level with, constant evade, massive bleeds and just watching everything die on my caltrops. But this isn’t really viable for dungeons, is it? On bosses the bleed stack limit is going to be a problem, isn’kitten

Power/Crit + S/P. Felt really clunky for the fact that you have to stand still while doing Pistol Whip. Decent damage, decent evade for survivability. Guess this is the best for dungeons?

Power/Crit + D/D (backstab build) is the last thing I’ve tried. I die like a fly and it feels useless for more mobs than 1. Maybe if I master it enough it would be fun for the high damage, but put one burn on me and I’m downed – not very fun.

I’ve tried searching for builds and tips by loads of googling, youtubing, foruming (most is outdated or I don’t understand it fully) and even asking for help in game (where no one even answers you). I still haven’t found anything I feel is viable at endgame stuff.

Point of the thread/TL:DR:
What do you use for PVE atm? Why is it good for you?
You don’t have to review your whole build, there’s a build thread for that. Just choice of weapons and what the build is based on will help alot.

Oprah understands my struggle.

You did really well on making a GW2 Barbie, it’s just not really my style.

My Elementalist, only a mere level 50 at the moment but my first character and my favourite one. Just picked up the game again and gave her a makeover.

I so wish I had a better graphics card… sigh… Sorry for crappy pics.

Arcane Shield is excellent to use with Meteor Shower, since it takes some time to cast.

I recently picked up the game again, and started a new character just to get back into it. When playing MMOs in the past, I was also usually a healer or ranged. I’m just not a melee person.

I’m not uber pro or anything, but I’ve come to the conclusion that Elementalist with staff is the profession for me. It’s ranged, lots of fun abilities (thanks to the different elements) and I haven’t had any problems soloing tough groups of mobs.

I’ve tried all professions to at least level 15, and Ele is without a doubt the easiest one whilst still being lots of fun. It took me a while to get used to it, but the self combos are amazing compared to anything else I’ve tried. You got damage bursts, healing bursts, survivability skills and all around a lot of abilities. I also love magic classes so it’s perfect for me.

While leveling an Ele I made my own made up build consisting of traits in Fire, Water, Arcane and Earth – the amout of trait points in order from most to least. Fire and Arcane for damage, Water and Earth for healing and protection while leveling. It’s working very well so far, I have no problem soloing groups of Veterans, Hard or even some Champion mobs. The important thing I’ve found is to use all element attunements, switching to get what you need. If it’s a ranged mob, interrupts in Air and protection in Earth, drop down healing from Water and burn down with Fire. This is why I love this profession, it’s so active.

That’s my 2 cents, good luck.
