Fatal disk-error (1450) on write

The GW2 client has been persistently crashing with the same error and getting worse since the first major update to the client. I’ve reported this error many times and Anet still hasn’t addressed this issue.

The client crashing seems to happen in these situations:

  • client downloading updates
  • initial client run after a system start
  • upon entering Tyria
  • and entering dungeons

There have been periods when I could play without any disruptions, but recently this problem has gotten worse to the point where with every login it would crash or with every entry into a dungeon I’d get the error. This has made the game unplayable. I’ve tried to solve the problem using these methods; deleting user files, running repair on game files (no errors here), adjusting virtual memory for the drive, running hdd repairs, checking background processes and disabling anti-virus and firewall processes, updating system and driver files.

System information:
Windows Vista SP2 32-bit
Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16GHz
Asus Rampage Formula motherboard, X38 chipset
Kingston DDR2 4GB RAM
Radeon HD 4870 512mb 256-bit bus width PCI gpu

The error is always Fatal disk-error (1450) on write, on the Gw2.dat file
My system and hardware seems to run the game just fine but something is causing this particular error on and off and with growing intensity every time there is an update. My client is unplayable now and I don’t know what else to do! Any help is appreciated.

I have attached a crash report for reference, P.S. the Error Logs at the bottom can vary depending on the situation I described above, but the error is always 1450 on write to Gw2.dat

Citadel of Flame weapons vendor

The Citadel of Flame vendor (Officer Veros in LA) lists the “Molten Harpoon” as a spear and the “Molten Speargun” as a harpoon. As you can see, the naming is backwards and confusing. I happened to have bought the “Molten Harpoon” assuming it was a harpoon for 390 tokens. I happened to already have a spear so purchasing another spear was a waste of tokens for me and I’d appreciate a refund of my tokens because of this simple bug.

What now for FotM post 28th patch?

For a player that comes on GW2 only to do FotM, I have to say my interests and enthusiasm to continue playing have dropped rock bottom. In fact if it wasn’t for the release of FotM I don’t think I would’ve stuck around. FotM was intended for those that enjoyed a challenge with its ever increasing difficulty scale. However, what challenge is there when with this update we can no longer progress past 49 given that the agony from Jade Maw is simply not survivable with whatever prior methods were used. I suspect that the original plans for FotM were to level cap players based upon how much resist they had on and to stop players progressing any further until further ascended gear were added to increase AR. This assumes 39 was the practical limit that players could reach with 30 AR and to progress any further more resist would be needed.

Considering this, that “Fractals of the Mists! … offers players unlimited levels of challenge!” (Nov 15th 2012 notes) how then can we enjoy unlimited levels of play when we have no way of surviving agony from Jade Maw at these high levels? And in all honesty I have never understood this final fractal. The mob and boss encounter seem trivial to the predecessor fractals both in terms of challenge and skill. For one, it offers no real challenge thus negating any required skills. Second, what is the purpose of agony striking during phase transitions when it is unavoidable. This seems futile to the heart of running a dungeon. Too many conflicting ideas have made this a poor design of a dungeon.

Secondly, and this is what has disappointed me the greatest, what has been the purpose of introducing ascended gear through FotM when now new ascended gear can only be had through dailies and monthly achieves? I have spent hours playing FotM and have accumulated 8k+ Fractal Relics and 86 Pristine Fractal Relics as well as all the rings and some back pieces and now I find that these tokens are as useful as a pogo stick in quicksand! I’m afraid that if no changes come to address these two issues I will be a ghost in GW2.
