That’s the bit that worried me, I’m not sure, no one at anet has said it’s an exploit, or a bug, no one said how serious the issue turned out to be, so I’m kind of running blind here and that seriously worries me.

Howdy, so I play this game very casually and I am a jewelcrafter. Now I don’t often have time to farm like others, so I mostly gather, make things, then salvage them for potential runes or really anything that could garner good money, Ori, ectos, etc. and what not as it’s easier for me. Now I made a ring out of the brilliant snowflakes and broke it down with a black lion kit, as I had a few saved up from lucky daily rewards.

And found the brilliant flake didn’t break, as a jewelcrafter I am used to sometimes getting back a material so I did it again, and again, and found it not breaking when I used my black lion kit. Now since the black lion kit specifically says it has a 100% chance to return upgrades I figured that this was working as intended since black lion chests are either rare or rather expensive (3 gold or so if changed to gems.) So I kept doing this until I ran out of black lion kits, i spent 8 gold or so on mithril, and earned 45 gold in ecto, so overall I made 37 gold.

I thought myself lucky, but today I see the content is gone, and see talk of it being an exploit and people will get banned, and now I am direly afraid that I will lose my account when I honestly wasn’t aware anything was amiss.

Heck I even reported it in the bugs section but then many other players told me it was because of how black lion salvage kits work and that it was working fine, now it seems that is not true and I’m just so worried.

So then for a TLDR version, I made 37 gold with the brilliant flakes salvaging thing without realizing it was anything seriously wrong, will I get banned?

I’d delete the ectos or get rid of the money or anything if that had to be done, I just couldn’t stand losing my account over this.

I agree whole heartedly, this should not have been taken away.

One final update, I had four flakes on me and I bought a stack of ore to try with the highest grade vendor kits. After doing the process until I ran out of flakes I actually came out slightly in the negative over all considering each flake is about 24 silver, ectos the same, and all other costs, ore, kits. And how many ecto I got (16) I broke even. So this is actually fine. With a black lion salvage kit it’s a money maker, btu without those it’s just fine. False alarm.

so an update, I have been testing with the highest grade salvage kits you can buy, and it definately doesn’t feel like an exploit. it was just me over reacting when I have so many black lion ones saved up. When you use vendor ones you get much less ecto and the snowflake breaks fairly often, so wtih the costs of mats/flakes/ecto to make the rings/and kits it isn’t really a money maker. So false alarm everyone.

Okay, so I found out I was stupid, I was using black lion salvage kits and that was why this was happening like ti was, so with that in mind this isn’t actually an exploit at all, just me not thinking. Sorry. Still if it turns out this is indeed an exploit it would be good if we could know, for now I’ll just assume I was forgetful about the effects of black lion kits.

Oh, I may be stupid, did you all try black lion salvage kits or others?

Hmm, so maybe it’s luck on my part? I’m not sure. just want to be sure it’s no exploit if it is. What kinds of snowflaks did you try? I don’t want to put exactally how in case it is an exploit, but I also am unsure if it works with all but one kind of snowflake. I may test it more.

So if you are a jewelcrafter you can use a specific type of hig level snowflake and then make rare quality rings/etc. You can then salvage those rings or whatever for ectos, but don’t lose the snowflake piece, so you can keep remakeing the ring using metal, and then salvage it for ectos, which while not guarentee’d is common, and the snowflake has a remarkably low rate of breaking.

Now I am unsure if I should explain better, but I worry posting how to do this exactally could be bad.

So then through this it is rather easy to get a fair number of ectos, I wanted to test if this snowflake reagent would break, but it has not and I have received about 40 ectos doing this so far.

So then I’d like to know if this is a bug/unintentional system glitch or what, because it seems rather odd.

Edit: I continued to test if the snowflake can break and have now ended up with an extra 25 ectos. Something definitely feels off.

I’d continue testing to see if it just has a low breaking point or none at all, but frankly since I’m unsure if this is an exploit I’d rather not be banned so this is all the data I can really provide.

I more so just wanted to alert them in case it is a serious bug, I don’t think anyone would complain about getting free slots, but, I know it’s not good to give people 300% of what they bought often heh.

Figure it’s safer to report the bug then not.

I was unsure whether to post this in bugs or account, but I thought it fit here more, perhaps. Please correct me if I am wrong.

but onto the bug. I had 602 gems, bought 800 more to get a character slot, and I did. I spent those and am back to 602. However when I then went to character select I found I had not 1 but 3 extra slots available to me. It was impossible for me to buy more then 1, and in my recent purchases it shows character slots only once. So I have no idea the conditions of the bug, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Arenanet, I love you, and I have loved the game you have created thus far.

However I heard recently that unlike the vast majority of game developers you guys aren’t allowing YouTubers to make money off your videos, and are instead asking people to remove any videos posted of the game that can earn money.

And I honestly can’t say I can thing of a bigger mistake for a growing community.

One of WoW’s strongest aspects has never been it’s gameplay, but it’s community, machinima makers, news shows, sites, guides, pvp casting, anything that game had communities built around it, and that gave it such a strong core that no matter what Blizzard does, or anyone else does, they will continue to have a strong core for years to come.

I personally had little interest in GW2 until I watched videos by TotalHalibut. His channel monetises videos as it is his job to make them, and they are high quality, and very good. And through his coverage of your game, along with the Yogscast videos they posted (which I could easily guess are also monetised.) I was convinced to not only buy your game, but bought the first one too.

I then watched Woodenpotatoes videos, of which he has hundreds that he put together over years, about every shred of lore in GW1. He too monetises his videos, and he deserves it for his hard work. His depth of coverage on the lore made me put in over 450 hours in GW1 and get all the HOM points, plus buy a good bit into your cash shop.

And that is just before launch, after launch communities could be built around this game, animators, guide makers, any number of things that could get people interested and engage them, keep them involved with the game and wanting more. It’s a level of free advertising no company could ever support. It could be a thriving entity that continues to sing the games praises for years after the last commercial airs.

So I suggest to you, Arenanet, let the content creators create their content. Let them earn the ad revenue for the videos they created. You have said many a time that you want to have a strong community core. Then this is step one.

Understand that people spend hours making videos, and for some, it is their living, they can love the game, but, if they can’t eat, then there is no incentive for such creative souls to join our ranks.

Looks to other games if you must, look to RIOT who made it a point to let people monetise videos, look at the strength of their community. Look to WoW and it’s allowance of, and even at times, support of people making content with their game. Look to any successful community built around a single game. You guys know what to do. I just hope it is done before all of those core people move on to something else.
