Magic Find Potential Solution

After reading a recent interview, I noticed that ANet was discussing ways of “fixing” magic find. I posted on Reddit, and then thought I would post here just to get my word out here.

Interview – http://www.relicsoforr.com/?p=2299#more-2299

“Matt Wuerffel: The role of Magic Find is something that we’ve been discussing quite a bit. While we haven’t decided on a specific direction yet, we can say that it’s clear that the current implementation has some negative social impacts, and we definitely want to address that. Guild Wars 2 is a social game, and we want to foster positive player interactions, so it’s definitely an issue that we’re looking at very carefully.”

So here is my contribution.

I know many people hate the existence of magic find as a stat on gear, especially people who run as a group. The one person benefits in monetary drops while hindering the succession of the run, either in battle efficiency or survivability… Now here’s a thought that came to mind. I don’t want to remove the magic find stat. However, what if each piece of gear had an innate “bonus” to magic find that isn’t part of the point allocation of stats?

Say I have X helm and Y helm. Both are berserk classification, same level 80 exotic stats, but X has 2% MF and Y has 3% MF. Almost like MF would be the difference in “quality” within the same tier of gear. It would give min-max’ers another stat to try to allocate as “best”, while still giving everyone equal opportunities for proficiency in battles.

I mean, it may not be the best solution, and I’m sure it’d be a programming nightmare to revalue current gear sets with magic find to try to adjust them, but I think it could be a unique way of dealing with it.

Edit: With this innate MF stat, you could also implement a way to increase a specific pieces MF stat with upgrades, purchasable with laurels, karma, tokens, what have you. This may cater to the more “casual”, without causing too much of a treadmill. Personally I prefer the RNG aspect of innate MF, but I can see why others would want to have the ability to increase it without buying new pieces.

Alright, I wasn’t going to post here, but all of the QQ’ing is getting kinda silly.

I opened about 170 black lion chests with keys and received 2 shoulder skins, 2 gun skins and the shield skin. 5/170 aren’t that great of odds, but I still have all of the items that I normally would have gotten and took it as such. When the MF chests came around, I thought “Oh, wow, a free shot at more stuff!”. They didn’t have to add this in. I would have used the tonics and boosters eventually, but I decided to toss them in. My first set of 24 chests yielded me another shoulder skin and the 1h chainsaw skin, along with a ton of candy, crafting mats, and tonics. I am more than pleased with this new system, granted I’m sure I’m on the lucky side of things.

These systems are in place as a gambling procedure. You know that this was a gamble. There are chances of losing gambles. There are chances of winning gambles. Even if you “lost” your gambles for making money, you’re still gaining all of the items that can be used for other things. Working as intended, and all of the people complaining should have understood the risk other than complaining that they lost.

Short and simple, if you don’t like to lose, don’t gamble. Chances are, that’s what is going to happen.
