I’m also on Verizon in the NYC area and am experiencing this issue.

Instead of setting up a VPN, try this workaround:

Edit C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts using notepad (run as administrator)

Add this line at the bottom:
174.35.56.164 assetcdn.101.arenanetworks.com

Save the file. If Notepad prompts you to save as a new file, you need to start over and run Notepad as administrator.

If you have the GW2 launcher already open, restart it. If this still doesn’t help, you may need to change the address above and try a different number (e.g. assetcdn.102.etc..).

You may want to remove this line later when (if?) they resolve the networking issue.

Good luck!

Verizon FIOS Northern VA user here. Add me to the list of those who this fix helped. Thanks.

A better solution is to allow the player to specify their preference for player density. Some players like being in a zerg, while others like myself want to avoid zergs like the plague even though I do like to see other players in the world. I suggest these options:

  • Frontiersman: preference given to being placed on lowest population instance. Increases chance that new instance of map is started when entering map and as population rises. Will be notified when new instance of current map is started up and given option to join it.
  • Adventurer: preference given to being placed on lowest population instances.
  • Infantry: preference given to highest population instances
  • No preference: the default and uses current algorithm

But we already had that before, kinda. The server selection window shows what the population of any given server is. Any changing your mind was just a server transfer or “guest” away.

Looking at it that way (from the perspective of players) really makes me wonder why there was a need for megaservers in the first place, unless of course Anet wanted/needed to cut down on active server infrastructure on their end, and that will have a negative impact on everyone, whether they want sparkle clusterblobs or some breathing space.

I like the megaserver idea better because it can be per map and thus more accurate. I don’t care if the server I’m on has a decent population. I only care if where I’m playing has a decent population. The problem as I stated it before is that ANet has taken away player choice with the one size fits all megaserver.

Instead of megaservers, ANet should allow players to play on a virtual server that places them on map instances based on a prioritised list of criteria that they can select. For example I really have no affinity to the server I’m on. I just want to be able to go out into a populated world but not one that is so populated that I don’t feel like I am having an impact. Other people might greatly value playing with the same group of people. Others might want to follow a zerg around to maximise their gains.

It seems like ANet has the capability to give everyone what they want if they would only let people tell them what they want. That would create virtual worlds that were really different from one another and more suited to each individual player’s tastes.

In fact now that everybody is essentially in the same world, there is no reason why each map instance of that world must identical. A truly wild idea would be for ANet to change the parameters of some map instances so that some versions would spawn higher level mobs, or have fewer waypoints accessible, and so on. ANet could add higher level content to lower level zones without affecting low level players who still need those zones. Players could choose if they wanted to “see” these special zones or not.

Ok, I Just finished the fight with High Priestess of Lyssa, and obtained the Illusions XIII trait. There have been many saying that these Events are Impossible to accomplish with mega server since there will always be people there to mess up the fight. Maybe it’s because I am on Tarnished Coast. Maybe it’s because players In there are generally more cooperative.

All I know is, all it took was some communication on map chat. " do not defend against those mobs..just wait.." a few times…. people stood around and chatted, when they weren’t avoiding and diodging and running away from mobs without engaging them. It is Not " Impossible."

I have unlocked 3 out of 5 grandmaster traits in 4 days. That hardly sounds “Impossible”. Try a different argument. This one is not compelling anymore.

That negates the basic concept of Guild Wars 2 that other people should not be able to ruin your content. I’d hate to be yelled at because I simply wanted to fight the mobs in front of me.

The basic problem as I see it is that the megaserver idea is a one size fits all solution. People should have more explicit choice on the types of servers that they get assigned to. This needs to be an explicit choice since the same person might want different things at different times and there is no way that the algorithm can know this.

Having such options should greatly help the algorithm. When maps start to get full and a new instance needs to be started up, knowing exactly which players would prefer to go to the new sparsely populated map allows the algorithm to send them there first without having to forcibly split up guilds and other groups who want to stay together when zoning.

Knowing the player density preferences of the players on a map will also help determining when a map is considered “full”. Having a large number of players on a map for people who want to zerg is different than having a large number of players on a map who like to have smaller encounters.

I haven’t played since the patch, but will probably log in tonight. I am posting because after reading through this thread I wanted to speak up for people such as myself who just want to go out into the world and adventure. The low populations out there really made that a lot less fun and is the main reason why I haven’t logged in for a while. In fact I came to this thread to see the progress of the role out since I don’t want to log in until I can see the effects of the higher populations.

As for the issues caused by the megaservers it seems like the root of the problems seem to be that players want to group themselves by characteristics that the megaserver sorting algorithm doesn’t have access to. The user interface should allow the player to explicitly state these grouping preferences which the algorithm can use to make better choices. For a start I’d add the following two options.

  • Allow players to choose a preferred language with RP being one of the options
  • Allow players to create campaigns which are a collection of parties that intend to adventure together

I just recently came back to Guild Wars and started a Mesmer. I thought I was doing something wrong or didn’t understand the skill correctly so I did a Google search. Now I find out this is a bug that they introduced 2 months ago. Come on Arena Net. Btw maybe it is just me but it seems like this bug recently got worse.
