Server Match up is terrible

I know there isn’t a perfect system, there never will be that people do not complain about.

But here’s what I’m seeing happening with my server GoM. We’ve won every week except 1 in the last 11 weeks (going on the assumption we do win this week). Yet our server ranking is holding within 4 ranks of where we started. Servers we have beat 4-5 weeks in a row, are getting more challenging matchups (higher ranked servers) and playing better than expected via the rank matchup, yielding large jumps in their ranking. Giving them the chance to play a different set of servers. We’re still fighting the same servers (which I imagine is getting as old for them, as it is for us).

What it feels like is that we’re being penalized for not absolutely dominating the lower ranked servers we’re facing. And yet (and no I’m not complaining about it) we’re having those two other servers double team us (which I believe and support as the reason for wvw), and no, it’s not because we’re “taking it easy” or backing off these other servers, they are legitimately putting up a good fight.

My point is thus. If you win, you win. You shouldn’t be penalized for not absolutely obliterating the losing servers. And yes, I get that it’s luck that determines the server you draw for your matchup. My problem with the whole deal is that other servers are making significant point gains, and getting out of some of these stagnant matches (which I was to understand to be the point of this new system). Due to the stagnant nature of the matchups, you do see people not going out to wvw, because they are getting tired of fighting the same people over and over.

Yeah, that was us Sarsbear. We were laughing like hell in TS while the fight was going on, wondering if we were ever going to kill you. Eventually, we were getting too close to the entrance, and decided that after that what, like 40 minutes of us fighting, no one was going to win, and we were going to pull back.

Well, tonight in EB was actually some pretty fun and entertaining fights. The fights back and forth at ET’s keep was crazy. 1 moment, we think we have a straight shot in, the next, you see like 20 people screaming in /t that AGG is at tower kittening people’s faces in. Much props to the crew that steamrolled us in Bravost, and kept us from taking it for some 20 minutes, outnumbered like 2 or 3-1. That was a pretty impressive defensive stand without any siege.

The AGG group that rolled in on us while we were trying to take the kitteneep had impeccable timing. Though 20 seconds sooner, and I think you guys would have wiped our entire force. We were down to like 10 people up, and like 20 in a downed state until rallies and resses started to finally happen. Though we sneaked out the victory, that was a hell of a fight against you and who ever was manning the siege equipment for FC there in the keep. Every second or so you would see people dieing left and right, you were just short probably 5 people and siege from holding and wiping us out.

Honestly, tonight was a battle of numbers, and we won that fight with player counts. I think everyone made bank for badges tonight though, zergs were being slaughtered left and right all night long!

I would say more than a few ET seem to be on alts leveling instead of wvwing this week, same with FC. The numbers are alot less than they were 2 weeks ago, and that’s really the reason the score is where it is. Honestly, I know I’m having more fun (even on the weekends when we seem to be alittle more behind) in this tier with the people we’re playing against instead of some of the other matches we’ve had in the past. I know some people complain about the AGG “zerg ball” or whatever you want to call it, but it really just adds excitement about moving, and seeing if you can live through their crushing attacks every night. The only time life really sucks is when you realize everyone is dead around you, and on one side you have what at times on the weekend seems to be the million man march of ET pushing, and you turn to run smack into the other 70 FC zerg. That’s when you just accept your repair bill and laugh about not paying attention

So good news I guess, based on the fact that T8 scoring still doesn’t seem right, we’re still losing more points solidifying our place within T8……

Honestly, though I know that we’re not winning by the huge margins that SF was, we’re solidly winning again this week, and losing more points, again. So short of SF completely kicking the poo out of HoD before they go up a bracket, we’re not going anywhere

It seemed to be a rough night.

Props to both FC and ET in EB tonight, you guys defended the kittens out of your keeps tonight. No matter what we brought to either location, we couldn’t muster the final push to get inside, and then we somehow got siege capped and couldn’t drop any siege inside. Nevertheless, you guys did a hell of a job fighting us off.

I was reminded by Blazers as I was logging, though we didn’t get your keeps, we did reset all the towers at least. But it was a hell of a fight

GW2 WvW needs to add more tactical aspects

One thing I would like to see changed alittle is the ease it is for players to destroy siege on the wall without using siege. Due to the width of the walls, Ele/Necro just destroy any well placed siege setup at a tower. I don’t know how many superior arrow carts I’ve just just destroyed because the tactical placements to try and keep players themselves off the doors is too easily destroyed by Ele/Necro. Plus players themselves can’t defend over walls with their abilities due to the same fact.

Being able to do dmg and such at towers/keeps is great. It’s good for players to need to watch the walls to make sure people aren’t raining down death and destruction below, I just would like to see some more help for the players that are making the efforts to defend to be able to defend.

Yeah, after the weekend ends, we usually seem to step it up and suck less. It’s just impossible at times to get people to focus on doing things for the SERVER instead of themselves, plus hell, it seems that we on GoM are slushes over the weekend.

If you haven’t tried WvW hammered, you just haven’t lived! was the motto someone mentioned

Unfortunately, all I am getting is a constant disconnect. Seems to happen every 10-15 minutes, though that interval is increasing as I now am having to wait for the queue pop to get into WvW……

Night Capping and YOU

Well, everyone talks about wanting to ensure things are fun for all players. I can tell you that from my perspective, being a player from GoM, that playing against servers that have full populations all day, and all night, makes WvW suck.

At release, GoM had a strong population (5 hour queues for the first week). Now we’re lucky to have 1/4 the population of servers we’re facing throughout the day. What remains of our server seem to be mostly NA players that work or have families. During prime time, we seem able to hold our own if people are playing, but week after week we’re losing players. Many of our “hardcore” PvP guilds have left, leaving several players that want to WvW, and do give it a shot. But ultimately it doesn’t matter. We’re too severely outnumbered , which is leading to more and more people being disheartened with the whole deal and seemingly leaving.

People want to say leave it alone, it’s fun. It is a great idea, and I’m not foolish enough to think that there is a solution that will make everyone happy 100% of the time. I also don’t want to advocate for a system that isn’t fair to the players. But tell me where the fun is for those players that are on the servers that are losing 400k to 50k? Don’t tell me to get more people out to WvW, they won’t come play when we’re trapped at our spawn. Don’t say get more skillz either. Those type of answers are counterproductive, and really add nothing more to the discussion.

I would like to see the orbs removed from the game, or changed to the outmanned buff. The continual glitching/hacking that is done makes the orbs just a means for the larger dominating population to further continue to stomp. Maybe also basing this off of the potential points, like after 45 minutes of 450+ to help the other servers would be a good change. Another thing is that the repair cost in WvW is killer, especially to those that are on the receiving end of the zerg hammer. Why not remove repair cost when you get the outmanned buff? Or how about removing the supply cost for some siege (not golems) for servers that have the outmanned buff?

Overall, one of the biggest issues that I am encountering with being on the receiving end of the dominating, is that it’s almost impossible to get people to want to pay to upgrade keeps/towers/camps knowing that we’re only going to hold them for an hour or so. Due to this, once a map gets cleared, if a server manages to get back into the game, they have no chance to hold whatever they push and retake. It’s also tough to get those same people to want to spend money or badges on siege equipment knowing that there is no benefit to doing so. I know there are people that apparently able to generate mad money in this game, but for a vast majority of the player base, this isn’t the case. Especially for those being dominated. If you can’t take anything, you don’t get karma or gold. DAOC previously addressed this by having a separate funding system that you could use for siege on top of the standard economy (which you have implemented in the form of badges). The problem is, that if you constantly lose in WvW, you can’t get badges worth a darn. Siege cost is rather high in the game, which combined with the lack of generating either badges of gold, is causing more and more people to refuse to spend what little they do get/have on trying to retake things. The net result of all of this typing is that servers like GoM that continue to get smashed, get weaker and weaker every week, leading to more and more discontent with WvW.

Sadly it seems a few bad apples are getting our entire server (GoM) double teamed every week. I wish there was something that could be done, as a result of the constant double entry, our WvW population has dropped significantly……
