Research challenge for John Smith

Can the nonquantitative disciplines get in on the action? I personally think most of the complaints in this part of the forums are caused by a failure of people’s perception in determining luxury goods vs necessities.

Do the mechanics of a game encourage such failure or do the people that tend to play games already exhibit such behavior?

Now that would make an interesting case study.

Complete side note: I cannot stop thinking of Apple products, while writing this post.

Heres an interesting thought experiment, what if the Gem -> Gold conversion rate was based in whole or in part on the value of a basket of high end materials, such as ectos, lodestones, t6 mats, etc. I imagine an inflationary pressure, however by buying such materials one could hypothetically preserve most his purchasing power. Then again such a system without some safegaurd would be ripe for manipulation, perhaps a delay on the conversion rate to give the market enough time to reach equilibrium…hmm economics presents so many interesting challenges.

Soloing FOTM - Tips, Tricks, and Discussion

I decided to create this thread to share some of my experiences successfully soloing fractals. A lot of tips apply mainly to guardians however theres a little something for everyone.

First, due to mechanics, solo completing the dredge and swamp fractal seems to be impossible.

The easiest/quickest fractal to solo pre fractal level 10, while many would believe to be the aquatic ruins, is actually the ascalon/urban battlegrounds fractal. The reason for this is the insane damage scaling npcs get from boons. The Charr NPCs with 12 might from the guardian staff ability Empower can easily kill Captain Amysh with little to no effort on the part of the soloer.

Aquatic Ruins: The krait at the begining of the fractal, and in particular the group of veteran krait guarding the final prisoner can present some problems. However, any difficulty is easily overcome with proper pulling. This is accomplished in two ways: First, for the ranged krait you merely kite the entire group backwards until you find the edge of the melee krait leash range and then go slightly beyond that, but not far enough as to out-range the ranged krait. It is also possible to single pull the melee krait by hugging their leash range and then waiting for one of the krait to use his dive/spin ability in such a way that propels him outside of the leash radius.

The reason this fractal sub level 10 is not easier than Ascalon is because if the Jellyfish devours your character, he instantly resets and starts regaining health. While it is possible with spamming the harpoon or trident 1 ability to interrupt this reset, this mechanic can cause this fight to drag out for an exceptionally long time.

Tips: Be sure to use any ability which causes sink/float when the Jellyfish gets too close to your character. For extra damage, the guardian trident 3 ability can be used while kiting and not facing the target. Spirit Weapons can also speed up the fight. Pray you don’t get eaten.

Ascalon/urban battlegrounds: Your rampaging army of super powered boon fueled Charr Npcs not enough? Well, use any ability that reflects projectiles, I’m looking at you wall of reflection, and watch those pesky rangers drop even faster. Why does the difficulty ramp up after 10? Agony murders your npc death army…fast…

Snowblind Fractal: It is possible to complete the melting the icewall event without killing a single enemy. With good dodging, and damage mitigation through gearing or reflects, its easy to keep all the fires lit for long enough.

Tips: The blizzard during the kill the elemental event occurs at set percentages of health, so either try to be holding a torch at those times and let your pets bring down the rest or light a fire and then burn the elemental down as quickly as possible.

Uncategorized Fractal: If you stand directly behind the fan control console, while Old Tom isnt spinning, then he cannot pull you, nor launch his electricity attack.

Volcanic Fractal: During the first encounter fighting with the Grawl Shaman, if you stand in the area near his platform and where you first entered the room, then the veteran grawl will not aggro onto you.

In the final fight against the Lengendary Grawl Shaman, bleed ticks take off stacks of his shield making this mechanic significantly easier to overcome.

I hope you have enjoyed reading this and in case anyone is wondering besides the screen shots, I’ve soloed uraban battlegrounds on 6, aquatic ruins on 11, TA path straight up, AC- Spider, Kholer, Cave Troll, and Howler King, though I was trolling my guild friends by killing them with his blast.

AC Explorable - Hodgins won't budgins

In my experience this happens when groups run through mobs without fighting them and Hodgins aggros onto them and then ports/runs to the players outside of the mob leash range. This also occurs sometimes with Detha if you run through the oozes to start the mortar fixing event. Solutions my guild has found is to have everyone run to the far side of that room and if that does work then kill all the mobs that you previously ran through, or lead hodgins to his death and rez him.
