I don’t normally make any posts for GW2 but when I saw this youtube vid for improving GW2 http://youtu.be/XMEq4PAFmnI I got a few ideas mostly involving Zhaitan and Orr and I felt that I should bring them forward.
I tried looking to see if anyone else has made these suggestions and I haven’t found any so I hope what I’m suggesting is new.
I know Anet is focused on polishing the game (which is a very good thing), but they’re also focusing on a Living Story. And I feel that some of the original story and gameplay needs to be improved before moving on to new stories and the inevitable expansions.
The big problem I’m seeing is the Elder Dragons are made out to be these epic world changing creatures. And yet the Zhaitan fight still feels anti-climatic and it doesn’t really feel like the world has changed after beating him. So here are my two ideas regarding those two subjects.
How to make the fall of Zhaitan feel more like a world changer.
The idea is somewhat simple taken in part from that youtube video, what if there existed two instances for a persistent map in Orr. One before the fall of Zhaitan and one after the fall. It would (hopefully) be similar in concept to a dungeon having a story and explorable mode. Essentially after beating the game when that player tries to enter Orr he has the option of entering a post game map. The beauty of this is that you get to develop the story and the area of Orr after Zhaitan while at the same time you could provided a region for a challenging post game experience. All while reusing some of the content already made for the map.
The major drawback I see from this is the current version of Orr before the fall of Zhaitan might suffer a loss in foot traffic. The best way (I can think of) to ensure this doesn’t happen is by either providing either unique rewards or slightly easier rewards for the map of Orr before the fall of Zhaitan.
I think that this type of change fits with the idea of actions causing an impact to the world and adds something that few mmos can really do, a real epilogue to their stories.
A way to make the killing Zhaitan feel more climatic.
I’m adding this mostly to state that this final boss fight still should be changed because it doesn’t feel climatic. This is the way I would change it make if feel more climatic, while at the same time, not asking for everything to be redone.
The biggest problem I see is the point that Zhaitan latches on to that tower and it becomes a ten minute hit the fire button while dealing with a few mobs every so often. The best fix I can see is instead of fighting in via cannons at some distance is that you fight him on the ship.
So how do you do that in a reasonable way? Best idea I can come up with is that laser cannon, instead of being destroyed gets a big hit on Zhaitan and he collides with the ship effectively ripping the dragon apart. The thing is that your dealing with an something that’s undead so ripping it apart does not mean it’s at all dead. You then have Zhaitan’s head and various limbs on the deck of the ship trying to reform within the ship effectively reviving Zhaitan from this mortal wound and destroying the airship. The final boss fight would be destroying the limbs and then head of the dragon .You could make the head something really annoying shooting beams or projectiles during the fight all while being invulnerable until the limbs are killed (then give it a damage buff just to be more annoying so it makes the victory all the sweeter). You could even have a climatic scene where Destiny’s Edge puts a killing blow to the head and knocks it off the ship.
Looking at this suggestion I realize this alteration is more or less a rehashing of the GW1 Nightfall Abbadon fight. Which in my opinion isn’t a bad thing, the Abbadon fight was easy but at the same time still enjoyable.
I realize its a long shot any of my suggestions would be consider for the current content. But I hope that someone would at least consider some of this for the future dragon fights
TL/DR: Possible improvements to the game and story could be adding a post game world to Orr and changing up the final fight with Zhaitan (even if it was similar to the Abbadon fight in GW1 it would still be better than cannons).
