Fractal Suggestion: Survival Horror

Reposting my suggestion from 4chan, since I believe it’d genuinely be interesting to see, assuming Anet actually reads this forum and/or gives a poop about what the players posting on it have to say.

A survival horror themed fractal that focuses on collecting crests and keys (randomly placed in different rooms each time the fractal is loaded) to progress through an area while an unkillable monster hunts your party relentlessly and unpredictably (suddenly showing up, attacking, and leaving, or simply showing up to obstruct your path or delay you).

You would be given a skillbar unique to this fractal that gives you a means of escaping or hiding, with each class receiving one skill unique to them.

Targeting Reticle?

Are we ever going to see an official implementation, in some way, shape, or form, of the “Combat Mode” mod?

That is to say, will we ever be able to press a key and switch to a centered targeting reticle (or crosshair), so that we don’t have to run around the game with right mouse constantly depressed? So that we can simply LOOK at the foe we want targeted and begin attacking?

It certainly isn’t impossible, or even improbable, if a user can hack it together as quickly as the Combat Mode mod was.

Along with GW2, I’ve also been playing The Secret World, which, while far less dodgy and action-oriented, has this exact feature, and after playing it for so long, I find it almost impossible to come back to GW2, where I could genuinely have my experience improved by the targeting mode, since it’s so much faster-paced, only to find that I have to constantly keep my right mouse button pressed down to be able to look around freely, using tab targeting to select my targets rather than being able to reliably line them up to select them.

It’s ridiculous.

EDIT: Whoops, didn’t know combat mode still works; last I checked, it had been broken by one of the updates. In any case, my point stands: this should be an official feature, not something we have to muddle through with a third-party program.

World not fully rendering since latest patch

Ever since the patch, the game has been rendered totally unplayable by strange rendering bugs.

Things don’t render, period. Things in the distance will flicker in and out of existence and every few steps, my character and all NPCs in the area will vanish, usually along with portions of the world. I’ve had no rendering issues in any other application. I’ve tried reinstalling the latest drivers with a driver cleaner. I’ve tried rebooting. I’ve tried running GW2’s shortcut with the -repair command line function. Nothing has worked.

I’m absolutely baffled.

AMD HD7850 on the Catalyst 13.1 drivers.

I’m made a bit queasy that I didn’t see a similar problem to mine at all on these forums (meaning that it will get silently brushed under the rug by the dev team and I may never be able to play again) and the only person on 4chan /vg/’s GW2 General who shared the issue said that he solved it with a reboot, which did nothing for me.

EDIT: Strange. It’s just this area near the Auction House in the Black Citadel. I warped away and was fine. I’ll update this topic if I find any other areas where I’m experiencing this…

On future events...

I think the worst part of all of this is the way that Anet has been ignoring the obvious criticism for lag, bugs, poorly optimized performance, etc. and has instead just kind of plowed on through to the rest of the event as if nothing is wrong.

I can handle Anet screwing up, because to err is human, but I can’t handle them trying to ignore that they screwed up and ignoring the playerbase who’s been following their kitten game for so long.

My guildmates and I tried to play the event yesterday, and after constant crashes, disconnects, and a lot of broken armor due to invisible, unresed, lag-teleporting karka, we gave up after it ended (that is, the world event in Lion’s Arch), and none of us have made any effort to continue playing the new content, since it’s clear to us that we’ll be fighting an uphill battle to do so.

I was really excited for this, too… I guess it’s back to Blazeridge Steppes until they (maybe) patch the new content…

Combat grunts and skill related voiceovers

Bumping this thread because I seriously thought I was the only one having this issue; nobody else in my guild seemed to notice the problem, so I had thought it was just something hardware-related on my end that was speeding up audio files or something.

Why I am not convinced about GW2

I can agree with some of your sentiments; one-on-one combat against enemies is typically easy unless I’m at a level disadvantage (which I never am), and world events are typically such a huge clusterlove that you can’t tell what’s going on, and you contribute almost nothing individually to said events, where the enemies scale to the 50+ players in the area so they have monstrous health bars that take 15 minutes of skill spamming to deplete.

Many dynamic events are also very boring, like you said. Many are almost identical to the typical MMO kill X of Y monster quests, but without having to talk to an NPC to start/finish them, and more and more lately I’ve found myself following a more or less preset path from one heart to the next, diverting a little to the left or right to grab points of interest and vistas.

However, I also can’t see how they could solve these issues, particularly the player zerging during events (after all, we all want to participate), and like Crazylegs said, right now this is probably the freshest MMO I’ve ever played, even if it remains constrained by many of the trappings of its less-appealing predecessors.

I just hope guesting gets implemented soon, and WvW stops cycling between servers and operates how it’s supposed to. Also, better GPU implementation would be great. All that being said, I’m having a lot of fun regardless, so maybe the game’s just not your cup of tea, Kozz.

Server Transfer Questions

Th-that’s great and all, but I’d just like to know whether or not I can safely server transfer to my friend’s server for a day or two, then go right back to mine without my guild dissolving or finding myself locked onto another server for a week.

The problem is that they have a group of friends on their server. I’ve invited them all over to ours, but they need to discuss it amongst themselves and come to a decision before then (as there’s nothing holding them to their server; it was just an arbitrary choice), and it may be a week or two before that happens.

I wanted to play with them as they’re all newbies currently, and it’s fun to teach newbies to play the game; you get to share in their excitement at discovering new things and such, you know?

ANet stated they’d implement guesting “once the server populations stabilize,” and yet they are encouraging people to utilize free server transfers in lieu of guesting until it’s implemented. That’s a clear conflict of interests, since the servers will never stabilize with people constantly jumping about to play with friends, so who knows when it’ll go live.

Just a few questions, for anyone who might have done so already:

  1. Is there a cooldown on server transfers, and for how long? I don’t mean for WvW, because I know about that. Like, if I want to go play with my friend on Sanctum of Rall, can I transfer over there, play with them for the night, then go back to Fort Aspenwood come morning?
  2. Does it affect my guild or my guildmates at all? Or are guilds exempt from server association? If I transfer servers, does it boot me from my guild or something, or are we just unable to participate in WvW with eachother until I return?
  3. Is there anything besides these questions I should be aware of when transferring servers? Is there some topic already out there that addresses my questions?

I ask because a couple of friends of mine are on Sanctum of Rall, and I’d like to play with them tonight, but I have a small guild of friends (maybe 10~15 active people) who I can’t risk abandoning; I just wanted to transfer for the night to play with my other friends, since guesting isn’t implemented yet and searching the forums has the devs responding to guesting-related questions with “Oh, but server transfers are free, just use that,” so I kind of figured that they must function in a similar fashion or else the devs wouldn’t be telling people to use it that way.
