Just some thoughts.
As a long term MMO gamer, crafting for profit is half the fun. I didn’t always make profit, but more often than not.
Everyone wants the higher skill but they won’t all attain it instantly. If you have more dedication to the craft you should have a higher skill and produce better items.
Mats need to be somewhat rare for a given level. Consuming a mat for repair is still a great way to do this.
I remember risking life and limb to sneak into the next higher level area to pick high level flowers. I was rewarded by having relatively high level potions to sell.
Maybe introduce a crafting professional option where you make better items in exchange for a long term combat nerf. This would make crafting great items something you were devoted to.
Had some thoughts on making crafting worth it.
Decrease maximum durability over time. Have NPC’s sell less than maximum durability goods. Have repairs consume one of the lowest priced material that went into crafting an item. This effects the crafted item price ensuring a premium for freshly crafted goods and tying the crafted price to the material price.
