Hi,
im Chozen Sin for a long time one of the top thieves in GW2 PvP
At first i wanna say its not easy to balance all professions and make them equal but i want to give some expressions and examples what you should think of.
GENERAL BALANCING:
In GW2 PvP most of the time the amulet decides which build it is (Conition, Bunker, Burst, Hybrid and so on).
So if you want to balance stick with the roles which means dont give a Bunker too much dmg and dont give a marauder/zerker too much surviveability but enough dmg.
Perfect exapmle for and unblanced Hybrid is celecstial d/d fire elementalist.
Too much surviveability with too much dmg.
Thief is a perfect example (except the meta build shadow arts d/p) too squishy and not enough dmg. Ill Talk about thief a bit more later.
ENGI:
My first example is Engi. Engi on marauder has very strong dmg / surviveability ratio, but no melee weapons yet. So perfect solution give engi a hammer with melee attacks.
What do u need to think of: The surviveability of engi is based on passive heals blinds blocks and/or invul / stealth and also CCs.
Since its pretty strong already does engi need another block on Hammer? Maybe yes BUT should it also do dmg? – HELL NO. Dmg or block completely fine both in 1 skill completely over the top. Maybe it would work on another profession which isnt that strong but no way it helps balancing engi.
Next example is the Gyro elite with the F5 ability. If you want to make such an elite there are some ways to design it. You can give a long stealth duration like 30 sec as it is now BUT the Gyro needs to be pretty squishy and/or stational which means it cant move. The other option is keep the movement as it is and give some surviveability to it but decrease the stealth to like 3-5 seconds and give a cooldown on it (25 sec for example). ! Both things together NOT balanced!
The F5 ability is 900 range aoe reveal which doesnt reveal the engi and only has 20 sec cooldown. Guess what the options are.. max range 300 or minimum cd 50-60sec. Maybe its still not balanced then but how can u even think of making such an Elite?
THIEF:
Thief is one of the most squishy professions in the game which has decent surviveability with shadow arts and vamp rune on d/p. If you look on other weapon sets there are 2 main reasons why they arent vible (Staff included).
Reason 1: Aftercasts.
Every evade weaponskill like s/d 3 or shortbow 3 or staff 3 has an aftercast which means the animation of the skill lasts longer than the actual dodge. So there is a window of time where u stuck in an animation which should be a dodge but u can get dmg and interrupts. On some other professions / builds it wouldnt be a problem but thief is squishy anyway so this small window of time where u can get hit “for free” destroys the whole weaponset. Why is shortbow meta then? – Simply because of the mobility and the blastfinishers poison should have a little longer duration. What does thief need? – An alternative to the shortbow (rangeweapon with mobility).
Reason 2: The dmg / surviveability ratio.
No other set has as much stealth as d/p or needs an enemy next to your character (cloak and dagger). This is bad because its your only surviveability as thief. You dont have invul like a mesmer (F4, sword 3). The only other source of surviveability could be dodges but because of reason 1: aftercasts they arent viable.
Also the dmg of all the other sets cant be compared with d/p, they are simply too weak and u get outsustained by many classes.
MESMER:
Slow is a nice idea especially on a skill like timewarp (high cd, u can move out of it, if its well timed its pretty effective) but be careful on other traits/skills the duration/cooldown ratio is balanced (which it isnt atm) because slow is one of the strongest conditions in the game.
The elite well from chrono (gravity well) is a free free full shatter for the mesmer which is NOT needed because mesmer already has traits like confounding suggestion which make it easier to hit a full shatter. Also mesmer has enough invul and does NOT need any more wells / traits /abilities where he can get it from.
Summary:
Its a pretty long post already and i didnt talk about all professions yet but there are enough other psts about it.
Just keep the following things in mind pls:
- Stick with the roles of the Profession / build / amulet
- Think about the strength and weakness of the profession you want to balance and what does it realy need, and what it doesnt need because its strong enough already
- When you nerf something like the weapon dodges from thief (from 3/4 sec to 1/2sec) make sure the animations still fit with the nerf.

also happend in ESL matches Go4 cups and so on
