A little statistic for you that is relevant. At least half of all marijuana growing busts are turned in by their girlfriends after a break up or fight. Something to think about. I think we all know the safe answer on this.
Yes, we all know the “safe” answer but we would like the “official” answer =D. I will take my chances and use my own judgement with my friends.
It’s super simple. Don’t say anything potentially offensive to people you don’t know who will take it well. You know your best friend, relative, GF, spouse so on. But guilds usually have members that you don’t know. Be wary, make sure you know the guild rules about language. Sure you can still get banned if your guild allows offensive language, but upon talking to your Guild Leader and others you might be able to find the person who is making the reports and kicking them or telling them to stop.
That much is obvious. There’s nobody to kick from the guild as there are only the two of us =D. So we want to know if the guild chat is monitored by an automated system because we won’t be reporting each other.

@InstantIdiocy, I was under the impression that bans always came with an reason (although sometimes vague).
Just the generic “Permanently banned for violating the blah blah” message. After much asking, he was never able to figure out what he did (if anything). He just received a message telling him his account was unbanned.
——
I think many of us would like the assurance that you can’t be suspended/banned for Guild/Party/Whisper chat channels unless somebody clicks the report button on you. When we’re talking to only people who we know won’t report us, are we free to speak as we like or will we get banned by an automated system regardless?
(edited by InstantIdiocy.8126)
considering what they did with other people, if you get him to post here and ask why he’s banned, I’m sure they will explain
He just got unbanned today (without an explanation as to why he was banned to begin with lol) but mostly we just want to see if there’s anything extra we need to be doing to avoid anything like this in the future.
Do we need to monitor ourselves in guild/party/whisper if we’re all comfortable with eachother’s vocabulary?
If you are chatting privately with a player and that player reports you, and you are found to be in violation of the Rules of Conduct, then that investigation and the results will take place in accordance with our policies.
So in the example given of someone having a private discussion with their girlfriend: if their girlfriend reports them to Customer Support, then yes—there would be consequences if the person is found to be in breach of the Rules of Conduct.
The same applies to guild chat. If you’re talking in your guild and a guild member reports you, there would be consequences if you’re found to be in breach of the Rules of Conduct.
So, in order to get suspended for using any sort of profanity in Guild Chat, Party Chat or Whisper – someone else in that Guild Chat, Party Chat or Whisper would have to report you? There is absolutely no automated monitoring system for those chat channels?
I ask because my guildmate just spent 9 days being banned for a completely unknown reason (never got ANY insight as to why) but the only possible reason (aside from a 100% glitch) is that he said something wrong in Guild Chat. However, him and I are the only 2 members of the guild and I certainly didn’t report him. So his account was banned for 9 days for either No Reason or because there is an automated monitor in the Guild Chat.

The Terms that you agreed to say that ArenaNet doesn’t guarantee that you can access the Service anytime You want. It may be unavailable for reasons within or beyond ArenaNet’s control. Since you agreed to that, it’s not fair to ask for compensation. The game is young, just try (harder) to be patient. We all want it to be ready and stable in its full awesomeness.
Many of us are frustrated and it doesn’t make it any easier when we lash out or have unfair expectations. I keep getting over-irritated too and have had a couple posts deleted, etc. It happens. We may not enjoy the downtimes but we can at least be realistic in our ranting.
Fieldy.6249, guildie of mine, just got unbanned, even he posted after me, and i am still waiting. Hope i could join him soon.

Yeah there seems to be a lot of people getting unbanned before people who have been banned and waiting on tickets for longer.
Players who think that the profanity filter is a tool that allows them to swear are mistaken. The filter is designed as a measure of protection for those who choose to use it, but it was never intended to replace good ol’ respect and common sense on the part of all members of the GW2 community.
I like Drintar’s analogy. I’ve seen other apt comments here, as well. Basically, think of the game as being no different than any other setting that involves a lot of people. You wouldn’t curse and swear in a public setting (or if you did, you would probably be asked to leave). You should not do so in a game.
Guild Wars 2 is a game that reaches around the globe and includes members of diverse races, cultures, genders, and age groups. We intend to keep the game environment friendly and welcoming for everyone. Please join us in that effort.
+1
I swear like a sailor among friends and such but I really don’t understand all of the people who think they have some right to do so anywhere they like in-game. I used to be like that too, when I was a young teenager. Maybe that’s what the issue is.

I used a unique pass, made no difference as I still got hacked.
A unique password isn’t the only consideration but it is important.
I never got banned, got banned 2 weeks for bad language.

…I’m not of the opinion that we should have people using racial, homophobic, sexist, or elitist terms to begin with. Why should women, gay people, people of differing racial groups, or casual gamers have to feel shunned by the community when it should be those that would make the community seem unwelcoming to these groups that should be dumped to the curb?
I think there is a simple concept people should embrace on the internet in general. The internet is a public space. Treat it like you would going to the movies or a restaurant. If you wouldn’t scream racial, homophobic, or sexist slurs in those places, don’t do it in map chat. If you would do those things, then live with the consequences of being uncivil.
Arena Net’s existing policy is consistent with their goals for community building:

From what I’ve seen of those banned for language use on Reddit, I’m happy with how they are approaching it.
^^^This.
It’s pretty pathetic how many people act like juvenile, loud-mouthed mental-rejects just because they’re on the Internet. 99.9% of them would never pull that crap in a public place. I’ve always treated the Internet like just another public place, I’m more myself than the majority of people I see.

It’s really very obvious.
If ArenaNet’s servers were compromised, we would ALL be forced to change our passwords and such because we would all be compromised. They would not be just waiting for people to get hacked and tell them to send a ticket.
We don’t need to prove ArenaNet innocent of being hacked when all the available evidence points to poor personal security and 3rd party databases being hacked & mined for login data. The burden of proof is on the accusers, not the defenders.
I’ve had access to neither a product or a service so I think that’s good enough reason to get my money back.
Unless you’re unable to install and launch the game, then you have access to the product. Logging in and connecting is a different matter, that’s accessing the service.
And, in case you’ve forgotten what you Agreed to:
You acknowledge that Service may be interrupted for reasons within or beyond the control of NCsoft, that NCsoft cannot and does not guarantee You will be able to use the Game or any Account whenever You wish to do so, that NCsoft will interrupt the Service on a regular basis for purposes of maintenance or updates and may do so without providing You with notice before such interruption, and that NCsoft may provide subsequent versions, enhancements, modifications, upgrades or patches related to the Software that You must accept and/or install before You will be able to use the Game.
As for chargeback not working, my brother paid for a service not a product. If the service is being denied him then he is within his rights to chargeback regardless of the hows or whys.
I guess I don’t understand how making a one-time purchase of a game equates to purchasing a “service”. A service has a recurring bill. Guild Wars 2 does not. It’s a purchase of a product that comes with a service.
But congrats on getting fixed.

If ArenaNet’s databases were “hacked”, there would be FAR FAR more “hacked” accounts and ArenaNet would be scrambling to force everybody to change their passwords/etc.
Compared to how many people are in-game, there really aren’t that many “hacked” accounts.
The problem, as has been stated by ArenaNet, is that other sites have been hacked and their databases mined for account info. Between that 3rd party security failure and typical brute-force methods (which only works on weak passwords), I think there are just the “right” amount of “hacked” accounts.
Sure, ArenaNet can implement extra security measures to help protect people but that would be out of the kindness of the developers, not because it’s their responsibility to protect people from themselves.
If ArenaNet comes on and says that they were “hacked” themselves, then I’ll retract my statements.

Right. We have a lot of people who need help, but we should dedicate people to hand-holding with giving warnings? Really? The warning comes through the User Agreement, the Rules of Conduct, and the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes. Become familiar with them and the problem is solved.
THANK YOU!

I have seen some people claim that the reason there are so many “hacked” accounts is because ArenaNet’s servers were “hacked” and that is how peoples’ accounts are being compromised.
Allow me to be clear, I do not believe this in the slightest.
What I would like, is for ArenaNet to PLEASE shoot this rumor down in any sort of official capacity so people will let that one go.
Like this guy who posted on my website:
“The reason so many accounts are getting hacked IS NOT because people have bad passwords. Although many people do have bad passwords, accounts are getting hacked because people have been getting through ArenaNet firewalls and are stealing account information.”
I mean, seriously? Without even a shred of evidence to support his claim. If any GW2/ArenaNet staff (nobody else) would like his IP so you can send the corresponding player-account a message, feel free to PM me =P.
