Ease of watching – particles (boons):

There are a lot of boons in the game. A lot are communicated with really small icons. I say this because of the above non-boon particles. It is difficult to see them should they actually have an animation associated with them. While making solid objects a priority for communication will enhance the boon information, there are some boon cues that could be visually improved.

  • Problem: visual information about boons is not sufficient.
  • Possible solution: more intuitive visuals associated with boons.
  • Cost of doing it: increased amount of visual effects.
  • Cost of not doing it: following the boons in play is extremely confusing since they are poorly communicated. Other particle effects are making it extremely difficult to
see what one should do, especially when there are massive skill effects
    around.
  • Implementation: the boons in play could have a stronger visual indication based on what they do. A lot of them could be revised effects that are already in play: stability can be the same effect as wielding the Juggernaut (half body, legs only, black metallic color); retaliation could be something similar to Guardian off-hand focus 5 but with daggers instead of shields (and much closer to the body to prevent clutter), and so on.

Ease of watching – telegraphing:

For a PvP game that wants to be taken seriously, the difference in size between character models will be off-putting to quite a lot of viewers. It means that their skill telegraphs will be very difficult to see, not only for the players, but perhaps more importantly for the viewers. The Asura are the big problem here, and it is not uncommon to see full Asura teams because of this discrepancy in ability to see telegraphed skills.

  • Problem: It is simply not fun to watch what you can’t understand, as has been the
    idea behind this text.
  • Possible solution: normalize the size of the player models, have tourneys play out in fixed races.
  • Cost of doing it: some players will be upset because they do not feel that it is a problem.
  • Cost of not doing it: telegraphed skills not being seen by viewers leading to holes in the information that should be given but is not. Not being taken seriously because
of these discrepancies; this can also lead to misunderstandings about hit boxes. Better telegraphing would also increase the intuition of when to dodge for newer players, and when someone should have dodged for viewers. It’s a nice mechanic, let’s make more use out of it.
  • Implementation: rescaling of player models seems like a viable option.

What would you do to improve the quality of viewing Guild Wars 2 streams?

Viewing Guild Wars 2

Guild Wars 2 is slowly moving towards being a better PvP experience. A great way of marketing PvP games has been via streaming, either personal streams or via casted streams of e.g. tournaments and scrims.

Following discussions online, in both this community and other game communities, there seem to be two identifying features of popularity: ease of following the match (visuals) and rivalry between those that are playing (drama). I will touch upon the first part here.

Visuals: or how I started worrying and hating the particles

A PvP-match in Guild Wars 2 is a flurry of particles and visual information. There is really no way around of describing this. There are clones exploding, dodges, a plague like character looking like she’s melting, more explosions coming out of nowhere, someone is getting impaled, and there seems to be a player who for some reason started swinging his sword in the air hundreds of times, and this would, at most, describe a 1v2 or 2v2 and not a bigger team fight.

You have never seen Guild Wars 2 before, just joined the stream in the middle of the fight, and have no idea what is going on. The person who played Guild Wars 1 for years and watched from the beginning of the fight doesn’t know either. You’re fine, but the way the game communicates is not.

Ease of watching – streaming:

Great progress was made with the creation of the spectator system. Previously, players who watched streams were stuck in the third person view of the streamer. Arguably, for most of the time, they still will be: unless you watch someone spectating your favorite player, you will have to watch it from the third person view.

This might not seem like a problem, but a lot of the time, there will not be much happening. And you will get very little information about what the other players on the team are doing. The little information you get from the mini-map is also potentially confusing since it will share an icon should a team have 2, or more, of one class.

  • Problem: information about what the team is doing is not readily available to the one watching a match.
  • Possible solution: announce more actions, e.g. when a team-mate is engaging in a fight make the mini-map light up in that area.
  • Cost of doing it: can clutter the screen if not done properly.
  • Cost of not doing it: watching a game can become stale quickly without information. There is a difference between providing too much information at once (particles in team fights), and not providing enough. Bear in mind that unlike in
e.g. League of Legends, the player can only see their immediate area. Constant interesting information can thereby be difficult to gain.
  • Implementation: A possible implementation would be to provide more mini-map informa-tion; fights can be announced by the icon of a player pulsating in a different color. This is readily available in WvW, although only for bigger fights. Crossed swords surrounded with class icons would be a way of showing who is fighting as well. This could also be a way of showing the magnitude of a fight depending of the amount of class icons.

Ease of watching – particles (non-boons):

In beta, particle effects were toned down. Arguably, there is still too much of them and they are really confusing, not only for new people watching but for veterans as well. A flurry of colors might seem impressive, but not much can be seen: is there someone ressing the downed one (their health bar is barely visible), did a thief just sneak in between the clones of that Mesmer? It is extremely difficult to follow which weapon skills and utility skills are being used.

  • Problem: abundance of particles without actual information.
  • Possible solution: make certain objects priorities: a health bar should be much clearer amidst a bunch of particles (for Mesmers, all the clones’ health bars become
clearer); targeted enemies could provide information on what they are currently casting/using.
  • Cost of doing it: using cast bars, and make e.g. the Asura more visible in team fights.
  • Cost of not doing it: while not completely removing the obscurity of team fights, this will provide viewers (and players) with a better understanding on what is going on. There will be more ”WOW s/he interrupted that! What a play!”-moments, something this game lacks but is present in e.g. LoL.
  • Implementation: adding more transparency to the particle effects could be a start, making the solid objects more visible, having health bars as “always on top”. Cast
bars are a coding and attitude question (they should not be visible to any-one but the one that has that players targeted)

I have created a 1000 sided die simulation which I will start when the new expansion rolls out. I will pick one number out of 1000. If that number comes up when I roll, I will pay the expansion’s full price. I will also pick 9 other numbers. If they come up, I will buy the expansion at a severe discount. I intend to roll this die as many times as it usually takes me to get extremely bored of rewards with extremely kittenty odds – usually around 10.

Winning through this simulation will ensure that I will have FUN in the expansion, because moving forward, no amount of Molyneuxian hype will make me purchase anything without it having a foot in a gachapon box.

What will be "custom" about custom arenas?

in PvP

Irenicus.9801

While I can see them go with gems for custom servers, making every custom server require rent in form of gems would most likely make any competitor to this game giggle out of sheer delight. If there was one point where the pvp in this game could be brought back to life, that move would definitely destroy it.

Want to stream scrims? Well you better hope someone in the two teams ponied up for the priviledge of providing Anet with free ads on the internet.

I would however applause the marketing genius behind depriving pvp players of so much hope that they are willing to pay for proper ways of facing other teams.

They could always just give out a free Version with less Options and a Deluxe-Version with all the Features (there should be many though).

I see that stuff like that should be free, unless there truly are some amazing Options, but I also see that ANet will continue to spend very few ressources on PvP if they don’t see any money coming in from that end.

They have to spend some money to earn some money. PVP is the badly abused step-child at the moment and it shows. Those that are left might be willing to spend some money on the actual ability to scrim properly, but those who have left will most likely not be lured back by the allure of what would in essence be pay-to-play. Now, if they would do an options way of making stuff fun … letting you skin arenas, skin characters, skin weapons, create awesome logos, buy voice packs that the enemy can hear, special effects, particle effects for skills in various colors, texture packs, rent out space for the teams to put their own commercials on, definitely … the core custom arena availability tho? the pvp-gaming world will make them into an even bigger laughing stock.

DC in fractals. no way to get back in

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Irenicus.9801

Irenicus.9801

Think of it as an Extended Diminished Returns Experience (EDRA).

EDRA is FUN! Since EDRA is based on RNG in Fractals of the Mist we can be sure that it is fun. Anyone can DC at any point and is then unable to come back – something which adds an additional flavor to this new form of dungeon.

EDRA protects the economy. Since Fractals of the Mist is intended to be done by 5 players, EDRA offers players a safety net against too cheap Globs of Ectoplasm and rare weapons, and/or armor.

EDRA adds challenge. Have you ever felt the frustration of Fractals being too easy? EDRA adds challenge to Fractals by adding the potential experience of experiencing a 4, 3 or even 2 player Fractal of the Mists run. It is impossible to not be excited with so much RNG around. Also, experience.

EDRA is ever evolving: being unable to reconnect after a DC in Fractals of the Mists is not the only way that EDRA will be implemented in the game. To combat the rarity of EDRA, it has been introduced on trial in the Cliffside Fractal where the final encounter becomes unfinishable on a RNG basis.

I can say that I am very excited by the introduction and expansion of EDRA and I hope you are too.

Fractals - a solution to the old dungeons

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Irenicus.9801

First, let me say thank you for bringing this radiant addition to the game.
The dungeon itself looks very well designed and it is clear that you have spent a lot of time on it.

I would also like to thank you for bringing in new types of weapon and armor stat combinations through drops in this dungeon. And of course the chance of getting the new higher tier weapons as well when we descend deeper into the dungeon.

This dungeon has made life easier on so many levels.

The inherently flawed “other” dungeons will in time be forgotten since they will not bring satisfactory gear and effectively the posts about how bugged and problematic they are will vanish leaving much cleaner forums even without merged threads. This will also alleviate dev time from these horrible messes to work on new, totally grind-free, fractals.

If everyone starts skipping getting those pesky exotics through those horrible old school dungeons then it is obviously not a gear treadmill, it is merely natural progression. Especially with the awesome new random-drops-only policy for weapons. This is an excellent way to distance fractals from the agonizing planning-to-get-gear dungeons and really show that it is something interesting that has never been done before.

It creates a sense of belonging since it requires people you know or guildies so you don’t get kicked and hounded for not being on the appropriate level in either the dungeon or in gear. For this last part it would be much appreciated if we could get a /gear command since it would make life oh so easier.

It teaches our younger, and older, players to count in amounts of 5 since that is what you will be seeing for quite some time.

It removes grind as well due to that it is always something different – never again will you have to run the same old school dungeon twice in a row!

I am extremely happy with this revolution which has removed the game from every other MMO where you have to grind.

I very much enjoy GWStory

Changing orders?

exact same thing here!

I feel terrible about not being able to switch orders. Not only does this hinder me from spending more money on GEMS to get the fine transmutation stones that i would have used, it sort of feels detached from the “do what you want to do” playstyle of GW2.

If people feel as if it would break immersion then let us become honorary agents in the other orders, which could also serve as a way to enhance the story experience. After one helps a friend, or anyone, with another story quest X number of times, let’s say 6-10 times depending on level, they become a honorary agent in that order with access to the Armor and weapons.

This would provide the game with an additional gold sink, it would make the personal story more involving, allowing those with only one character a glimpse of the other personal story lines, as well as opening up the possibility to sell more GEMS for transmuting the looks of the weapons and armors. In the end everyone wins. Let’s make this happen!

Despite the massive price dumps on some fine crafting materials they are not really moving like they used to. While manipulations influence the sell orders, the demand part seemingly vanished a few days after the outage. Bots that were selling off massive stocks – since they could not continuously trickle in sell orders – might have had something to do with it (see ecto prices for this trend). However, power-crafting guides and terrible options for secondary use of crafting materials have most likely also contributed to this problem.

Scammed in-game

Posted by: Irenicus.9801

Irenicus.9801

Dear WildFire, as the link in my post above shows, the Trading Post does not protect buyers from being scammed. Hence it does not stop ALL scamming from ever being an issue. This scam is based on a bug on ArenaNet’s part and is a major issue right now for people who have literally lost ~6-15 gold. Further, it is a future issue for those who will lose such amounts because ArenaNet, despite knowing that the goods are bugged, is not removing the scammers goods from the Trading Post, nor are they providing the buyers with the actual goods that they bought. The trading post might be a buyers best chance of getting their goods, but it is not scam-proof.

Sad to hear this, but for those arguing that using the trading post is an, or rather the, option, you are not safe from being scammed there either. And even if the scam occurs due to a bug on ArenaNet’s part, you will receive no help at all with getting the goods that you actually paid for. As a bonus, the bugged goods are still allowed on the trading post! … However, it’s not gamebreaking for a player. Yes it sucks, everyone can see that it sucks. Infact it sucks so much that some people don’t even believe it could happen. …

Actually, it can be quite game breaking for a player since the issue has gone from fault to trust. This bug highlights their unwillingness to take responsibility, and I argue not from the perspective that they are unwilling to grant the actual item a customer bought before this bug was generally known, it is about this unwillingness in relation to them not removing the option to list this box on the trading post. Hence, even after they are aware of the problem, aware that they will most likely not give anyone the goods that they bought, they are still knowingly allowing players who trust in ArenaNet to become victims of this bug. That is, at least to me, unfathomable.

I couldn’t help you as I’m a no body, but misleading information like that in real life is considered a crime, and you could be fined, and go to court for things like this. In the game however, it’s not quite the same, but it would be nice to know some sort of justice is felt when you are being ripped off by such things, I think.

Plus, where was the information even misleading?
It says “Box of…” it never says “Box with set of …”, “Set of …” or “Box of complete …”.

Quick googling reveals that the boxes are mass-craft options which’s recipes are obtained via the Mystic Forge. WoW had the same for some usable items like Engineering Bombs (Box of Bombs and it didn’t contain one of each type, either :P ), so this isn’t exactly something new.

Why is this in Game Bugs, anyhow?

It’s not hard to believe that the people who crafted the “exotic” draconic box of armor knew that the materials going into it are actually for rare/yellow items. They’re pricing what looks like an exotic/orange box of armor at exotic armor prices when they more than likely know it just contains rare/yellow armor and the cost for them to craft the box reflects that.

So essentially they’re “exploiting” that their buyers are downright stupid and can’t even invest the 10s to tab out and google what these boxes contain?

Not sure I’d blame the sellers here, tbh…

The caveat emptor argument is completely baseless unless you are arguing that ArenaNet is not to be trusted; they have coded the box in a way that markets it as a full set of “… Draconic Armor” where the name Draconic signifies the crafted exotic armor, with the color used for exotics as additional information pointing towards it being an exotic.

While I can understand each players frustration with purchasing a box that is labled “Exotic”, almost every one of you also openly admitted that it sounded too good to be true, as you knew each piece goes for 3g+

Sure, you spent 10g and didn’t get what you thought you were getting, but asking for a free exotic set to compensate you? Really?!? Anet is not at fault and we have a wiki and other resources available. You all made impromptu decisions without doing any research first. So in all fairness, you need to share the blame as well.

No one is asking for a free set, everyone is asking to get the set that was represented on the box – Draconic. Anet is at fault. They have coded the game. The sellers do not choose a name for their set, nor do they chose the color of the text which matches with exotics. It is clearly, in text and in appearance presented as an exotic set. There is no caveat emptor possible unless you are asking us to completely distrust Anet.

I do not believe Anet should refund anyone who purchased the gear, as that would be inflating the economy as the goods were bought the seller(s) have already earned and possibly used the coin from the proceeds.

The effect would be absolutely negligible, unless you have an entertaining view on the size of the economy of this game, or a more inside view of what has turned into a scam. The point is even further diminished as most of the players are asking for what they according to the trading post transaction records are entitled to.

Lesson learned, and in the future I would highly encourage players to ask questions in chat, take some time and do some research, etc. The deal looked too good to be true, and here you are crying foul thinking you were going to get a full exotic set for half the price it currently sells for and find out that is not what you got.

Again, you are asking players to distrust Anet, what is your motivation in doing so? Why should someone distrust the way Anet codes their game in terms of what a purchasing party will, or rather should, receive from the trading post since the only control the seller has of the marketing of a good is its price.

Orders were/are not showing under the “Item I’m buying”, which I would imagine would be an important factor for some, including me, to get their gold back (invisible orders that have already swallowed money and can’t be cancelled will continue to hold on to that money).
