Thanks for the replies guys.

It’s amazing to me that in 2012 a developer doesn’t have a process in place for rollbacks, every other MMO in recent years has that. If they can’t rollback then some compensation should be given to the affected accounts. Especially when like me, they paid real money for gems.

Would be nice if a Anet employee can just confirm that this no rollback policy is still in force, so that people like me can feel safe in playing their accounts again.

Agreed. But it’s not just their policy, it’s their technical inability to do it, which is hard to believe after 4 years in development! I would go as far as to say an MMORPG shouldn’t be released unless this is part of the specification. This has only happened once to me before in 7 years and in that case, Blizzard had my account restored and all my stuff returned within hours. that’s how you need to do it!

This is their reply to me when my account was restored:

“Hello,
The Guild Wars 2 Support Team is unable to restore missing characters, items, or Gems. We are also unable to manually transfer characters from one server to another. I understand this may be frustrating, but we simply do not have the capabilities to do this.”

Unbelievable that they don’t have the expertise to roll-back accounts so your stuff is returned like every other developer and just not acceptable for a modern MMO which is based in a “persistent” world. I certainly will never buy gems for real money.

Just recently got this reply from Anet regarding my lost stuff:

Nice to get a reply but for me this is a startling admission from a developer bringing an MMO to market after 4 years of work! (which does show in the quality of the game). The whole point of an MMO is that it is a persistent world and loosing all your progress and stuff following another security kitten up or technical failing (on the developers part) and never getting it back is unacceptable as every other developer knows.

Get your act together Anet – this needs sorting out quickly.

Blaming the customer for having weak password discipline also doesn’t cut it. All MMO developers have a duty to provide account security irrespective of what happens on other web sites etc.

Oh wow. I wasn’t aware they were responsible for securing the users password and email on every website……

The point was, that the system should be secure irrespective of where the username and password were obtained. That’s what the email authentication is supposed to be for. Where or how the details were obtained are irrelevant. And I don’t pay websites to keep my account secure – I have paid Anet!

The roll back of accounts needs to be sorted out. Anet’s reply of “we can’t do it” just isn’t acceptable, particularly when there has been so much account hacking.

I got my hacked account back very quickly but my stuff was gone. This is in spite of my home IP having been validated by email several times in the previous days so how did the scumbag use my account from a another PC?

I’m finding it hard to get back into this excellent game as I feel any day all my efforts could be wiped out again and I start from scratch. Not exactly what you want from a “persistent” game world!

I know I’m luckier than most as I had my hacked account restored in 24 hours (nice job Anet), but I still have a beef!

On logging in, I find I have lost all my currency and all my inventory and bank items and Anet state they will be unable to restore these. Why not, can’t they just roll back my account as every other MMO developer does? This is just not acceptable. Only ever been hacked once before in 8 years and in that case Blizz had my account restored and all my stuff back within hours.

Also, I fail to understand how my items were lost when my account was verified by email several times before the hacking. Even if the hacker had my username and password, how were they able to access my account from a location other than my home IP address? Is the email verification not working or is there another hole in Anet’s system?

Maybe things are improving. I got my hacked account restored today after just 24 hours. I still lost all my money and materials which I don’t understand as the email validation should stop a login from another IP even if they have my username and password as I understand it.
I think there is more than one hole in Anet’s account security.
