If you are dieing too much, you aren’t playing your class well. I’m a power-focused Elementalist and I haven’t had issues with survivibility. If you are utilitizing your different elements during combat, you can keep yourself alive while maintaining heavy damage to the enemy.
I’ve quick swapped to each element to fire off my best attacks during some nasty fights. Don’t sit on one element and wait on cooldowns if you can move to another element.
