I can absolutely be bought. Having spent the past couple months with everything needed for Bifrost minus The Legend, I will wholly support whichever candidate mails me the precursor. Alternately, a candidate may secure my vote by seeing to the destruction of the money-thieving mystic forge and the incarceration of the despot Zommorros within a porta-potty, as befits his nature.

Either way is fine; vengeance isn’t a legendary, but it will feel just as good.

Hear me, candidates? Unscrupulous voter here, easily swayed!!

Going for Bifrost. Have everything done except precursor.

Been feeding the forge – happy to do my part to rid the economy of excess rares. So far, have gotten three imryldyeen, two memory of the sky, two silence, one deathwish, and one bramblethorne…but still no precursor.

Still trying…

Anyone got Precursor with Southsun buff?

I got Storm, but it was from the daily chest you get from killing the karka queen, so the MF buff was unlikely to have had much to do with it.

Have all three gifts, and no precursor to make Bifrost. Still, was nice to at least see one drop, even if it wasn’t the one I needed.

I think what Mcarswell means is that he is postulating that the quality of loot in each loot slot is an independent roll. In other words, currently we have 1 loot slot that is a guaranteed rare, and 4ish more loot slots where each slot has some chance of giving you a rare or exotic. If they move the guaranteed rare loot slot into a daily account-bound reward but leave the other loot slots as-is, then we will be getting rares out of the event chests with the same frequency as we are getting 2-3 rares right now. The potential rares from the event chest is what Mcarswell is referring to as the “extra” rares. Think of it like a slot machine: right now we have a wheel that is fixed to “cherry” but our other wheels can also turn up cherry; all the patch will do is move the first wheel out of the machine into a box we can only use once per day, but the other wheels are still turning up cherries with the same probability.

Where the misunderstanding is happening is that you seem to be postulating a different loot mechanic, where you make a roll to see how many rares you get, and then the chest fills in the rest of the slots with blues and greens. And so you are expecting that they will be moving the “number of rares” roll into the daily reward mechanic, and then the game rolls a different random number to decide what your total chest loot is.

From my reading of the initial announcement and subsequent dev posts in other forums, I’m leaning towards Mcarswell’s model, because there are repeated assurances that the chests will still have the same chance at exotics after the patch, which to me implies that they are not going to change the loot tables at all and leave the probabilities for each regular loot slot as-is.

Exceptionally well-summed, Elentari. You’ve captured one of the two key concerns in a nutshell.

The other relates back to the reported behaviour of getting a single exotic from a boss chest, and (possibly related) the apparent increase in frequency of exotics in general.

The “single exotic” could have happened one of two ways:

1) The “guaranteed rare” is not guaranteed, but rather “very high probability”, and it did not fire. However, one of the other item rolls resulted in an exotic, possibly aided by a higher exotic probability following the patch.

2) The “guaranteed rare” is not guaranteed to be a rare, but rather, a “rare or better”. In other words, it participates in the same “whaddya’ get” roll as any other item, with the exception that anything below “rare” gets bumped up to the minimum (76 rare or what have you…)

If #1 happened, there will be no change by moving the “bonus item” out of the chest and into a wiggly little box on your screen. If, however, #2 is what occurred, and if it occurred as a side-effect of an improved loot table on the chest, then moving it out (and setting it to be a “guaranteed rare”) will in fact result in a lower overall quality of loot, since there will be one less item that could have been an exotic (but could not have been worse than a rare).

Of course, if they make it “rare or better” in the once-per-day-per-account box (hint hint ANet, think “improved chance of precursor”…), then this could be a very welcome change.

I realize the intent behind hiding game systems (aside from ‘immersion’, etc) is ostensibly to reduce the “min-maxing” that invariably will occur once a system is understood, but in cases like this a little transparency on how the loot rolls are made can (at worst) set players’ minds at ease, and (at best) allow players to provide more accurate reports when the mechanics in-practice do not match the mechanics intended by the developers (see the recent loot-tagging change for one such example).

It’s also humorous that the first projectile coming at you will either damage you or not damage you (either way, you still capture) depending upon whether you’re equipping a 1h or 2h weapon at the time — at least, operates this way when karka farming. Perhaps the size of the weapon impacts whether mimic’s shield can cover your knees.;)

I rarely use mesmer portals for jumping puzzles, I kind of think it’s missing out on the point. but there are occasions in the EB jumping puzzle when I just want to get the stuff and get back to contributing. In those cases I tip the mesmer generously, they aren’t getting anything from standing there waiting on portal cooldowns, they might as well get some compensation.

^^ I appreciate this. I’ll usually hang out in the EB JP for a while after completing it, offering portals to anyone who wants them. On a good day, maybe 1 person in 15 will tip; on a bad one, I won’t get a single tip at all. I never ask for compensation for ports (and don’t intend to ever do so), but I always appreciate it when someone does it (and I thank them), and to be perfectly honest if I’m being tipped I do usually stick around longer to help out. Also, on rare occasions you do get someone who tips very generously (~25s), and that pretty much can make your entire virtual day.:)

Confession: When I first started doing this I had people occasionally drop the siege blueprints they’d gotten from the chest behind me without saying a word. I didn’t pick them up, because I didn’t realize they intended them to be for me, so I think more than a few probably rotted on the ground those early weeks.;) facepalm

Well said, Dogblaster. I like the piece you quoted.

Obviously, everyone has their own opinion on the matter — some people believe they should get a pellet when they push the lever, each time, every time, and that’s a fine and valid position. Others enjoy the thrill of pushing the lever, knowing each time they could get a pellet, or they may not — also a fine and valid position. Slot machines, lottery games, and raffles all exist because many people enjoy the activity despite (or perhaps because) the “odds” are against them.

Legendary skins are intended to be desirable (and, judging by the number of posts on this topic, they are), and what Dogblaster was pointing out was that part of the desirability will most likely fade if the system is changed to make them easier to acquire; in any game with even a hint of a competitive element, it’s reasonable to expect some persons to want to showcase their achievements, not just in triumphing against the game, but in doing so better/faster/luckier than their peers.

While this was called “elitism” by silleh, I really cannot agree with that — it’s the nature of competition. Every athlete at the Olympic games is arguably among the best on the planet, and in any given event every single one of them may successfully complete the course/obstacle/challenge placed before them — a triumph many people could not do. However, we only award the top three with a place at the podium. Regardless of how well everyone else did, or how hard they tried, the field of athletes are absolutely not recognized equally, nor should they be.

This analogy only carries so far for two reasons. One, a legendary is intended to be /difficult/ to achieve, but NOT necessarily intended to reflect a player’s “skill” per se (note that this in no way diminishes the “bragworthiness” of having one – the difficulty in obtaining it is sufficient). Two, unlike the Olympics, there -is- a guaranteed method of obtaining a legendary. If you want the precursor, and you dislike games of chance, you can purchase one. Full stop.

If you believe the precursors are too expensive, that’s not AN’s fault — that’s your fellow players, who are (naturally) trying to get the most coin they can for one (supply and demand). As for the allegations that “gold farmers are the ones who have the precursors on the TP”, just like anyone else, if you feel the prices are too high simply don’t pay it. They gain nothing by keeping the item listed for a too-high price, and prices WILL come down as more enter the economy and nobody buys them past a certain price. The reason why something is priced at 300g is because someone already paid 280g for the last one.

I hope the method of acquiring these weapons is not changed; while it means it will be harder for me to get one (I do not have a precursor today), that doesn’t really bother me — eventually, I’ll get one, or I’ll shoot for something I like more if one appears. I don’t feel entitled to have one, there are no better stats on it than the exotic weapon I presently have so I don’t “need” to get one to be competitive…it’ll be a nice vanity skin when and if I complete it.

And on the day that happens, I will run around Lion’s Arch swinging it and relishing every love/hate whisper I get on the matter, a victory that will taste all the sweeter if I’m the only person doing so. Because I am a unique snowflake, and my Internet Purple makes me >> the guy next to me. Etc etc. Such is the nature of competition.
