I tried it for a little bit in PvP. It’s objectively less effective in sPvP, since there is little to evade with. However, I think it really shines quite well in WvW and PvE. Pistols are a thief’s longest-range weapons if traited, and the Unload skill can deal incredible amounts of damage. It’s better to use the Signet of Malice with P/P though, I think, because of how many “attacks” you can get off. With the extra initiative trickery traits, you can easily get 4 Unloads in a row, leading to 32 × 132 HP heals. Stealth is also a little less necessary as P/P compared to the melee builds, but I do like getting those 5 bleed stacks.
S/D thief in PVP is the most reliably viable in terms of survivability in PVP. It is loaded with evades, stealths, and even has a boon steal.
It is also a very difficult combination to play because of how hard it is to keep track of even what you are doing. If you ever don’t get dizzy watching yourself whirl around the battlefield, then you’re doing it wrong.
A great guide for S/D is http://metabattle.com/wiki/Build:Thief_-_Sword/Dagger. I personally prefer Blinding Powder to SR, but they both grant area stealth and in PVP there is little difference aside from the dark field and regen that SR provides.
Normally when I’m playing I’ll get about 20 FPS (I’m fine with that). Every 10-15 minutes or so, however, the game will drop to 1 FPS for about a minute before picking back up again. This happens regardless of whether I’m standing still staring at a wall or if I’m casting 5 spells underwater.
I’ve been trying to figure out how to stop this, and I’ve update my NVidia GeForce 9100 driver already as well as following the suggestions from the tech forum here for graphics optimization but with no success. I also change the game’s priority to high in the task manager.
The computer I’m on is an HP p6404y with an AMD Phenom II x4 820 2.8GHz processor, 8GB RAM, I’m running Windows 7 prof. 64-bit
I’m not sure what other information might be helpful.
