Sounds like you have some sort of virus on your computer. Since it is clearly working quite well for others.
I suggest you scan your computer and get rid off all the viruses and then try again.
And no, they shouldn’t and probably won’t remove the encouragement to use available account-security.
Ironic, as it turned up in my AVG as a potential threat.
Yeah sounds like your AVG is out of date, mine’s working perfectly and it’s the latest, but I have tweaked mine a tad for gaming.

The relevant part is a post by Chris Cleary from ANet:
“If you are still having problems, try adding this to your GW2 Shortcut Target:
-assetsrv 62.154.232.187:80
If that doesn’t work, try
-assetsrv 151.249.90.138:80
You can do this by right clicking on your GW2 Shortcut and adding the above text to your Target field. For example your target should look like this:
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe” -assetsrv 62.154.232.187:80"
I just tried the first listed fix and now both I and my wife are in and enjoying the new bugs.
Used the first one and finished download in 1 minute.
Also from UK with 1 file remaining. With SKY.
