condition damage is all well and good but im sure they have plenty of ways of removing it as well
and btw dont get me wrong, i like the idea of having multiple roles in pvp, such as support/defender/roamer and the like. i just find it extremely boring having to avoid guardians
maybe the guardian lived for ages and got backup? maybe 3v1 they should have beaten him without help, but my point is that they live far too long even when out numbered
imo their ability to hold a point solo is just a wee bit too good at the moment. i also wish retaliation boon was a bit more noticeable :S
i mean come on, -100% fun passive? that is way too much.
see one of those tanky guardians with their various knock-backs sitting on a point? glhf go elsewhere cos you are not killing him and capping before help arrives, so that is 1 of 3 points out of the game while he sits there fapping away or something, waiting for his glory
DULL. support guardians are way more fun to play against
Not that its very important, but maybe if people put [PvP] or [PvE] in the thread title it may make life easier xD i think the two are very different playstyles for thief and i know i’ve nearly made some replies that were a bit irrelevant to the OP
sorry but doing this 50 times was a waste… you are forgetting two incredibly important factors
1) its a team game. you should work as a team to reduce the effectiveness of the enemy team’s priority targets (such as a thief who is killing you all because you dont dodge)
2) the game mechanics are designed so you can mitigate crazy amounts of damage by having a brain. ONE SINGLE BLIND FIELD = HS thief nullified. i dont know which classes have this, but its just one way to counter the HS spam. with dodges you can avoid 2 HS no matter your class, and you probably have various blinds and immobilizes to add to that
imo the HS build is one of the weaker thief builds against clever players :<

imo just make the animation faster and it would serve its purpose fine
to be honest i dont think the 10 seconds of stun would be worth it – if my maths is correct here thats a cumulative 30 seconds where the rest of your team cant do anything because they are waiting to line up their stun on 1 target out of potentially a whole team.
if everybody was fighting different targets it would still be an excellent stun on everyone, but generally you want to be all jumping on one or two enemies, all at the same time :\
steal is simply amazing in pvp, as you always get the same abilities from each class so you eventually learn what you are getting and all the abilities are useful. the axe spin one from warriors does insane damage and is great for finishing someone off if you arent a crit build, for example
the guardian one gives a 3 second daze which is amazing
mesmer = ALL boons for 10 seconds!!!
ranger = regen, kinda weak but meh
thief = additional stealth and blind
etc…
and if you trait it gives you sooo many other buffs. i used to hate it now i love it
yeah its annoying, but i think this is intended so that you cant cheat jump puzzles (and it would also be pretty useful in pvp)
the delay thing bugs the hell out of me because if you are using it for a move speed boost, by the time you have shot the arrow you have run half the distance it has traveled anyway!
p.s. explosive arrow moves way too slow. you can fire it max distance and blink+run to it and get there before it hits the ground
i agree with OP as far as some builds go, but those tend to be more cookie cutter
i took ideas from a guy on arena junkies who wrote a very thorough and well explained guide about lots of different thief aspects and it has really helped to open up the possibilities
atm i am built to have 3k power and about 1k condition damage, and i go SB + P/D. my aim is to start the fight using the bow in most situations until i can see how the enemy is playing. unless im against a warrior (or sometimes a mesmer – that SB aoe is helpful against clones) i’ll switch to P/D so i can keep applying lots of bleeds and put out consistant damage by using pistol 1+2. if i need to keep my distance, i use 3.
if i am in a combo field, i use 4 (the bouncing dagger throw) because it is an amazing combo finisher, does good damage with my high power (and might stacking build) and hits 4 ppl for a slow. if i want to use sneak attack i use 5 to get in stealth
steal is a very important skill and once you learn the abilities can change a fight if you steal from the right target
my utilities are 2 venoms, one of the stun breaks or stealth abilities, and obv thieves guild.
i’ve tried to go for a playstyle where i keep doing good damage, have decent durability and can apply a lot of conditions, and its a lot more fun than spam builds
im undecided if its worth it in sPvP or not… the flat toughness from that trait line is good but i would have to sacrifice condition, power or vitality and i dont know if im willing to drop one xD
i see, so that actually fits in really nicely to my might stacking/condition damage build! although with my current traits im gonna need to change things a lot to get 30 points for the venom share ><
i wanted to run it in pvp as a support build with good sustained damage cos there is no way in hell im gonna be one of those PW/HS spammers
lets say im running venom share with the DoT venom, the slow venom and the weakness venom, and i pop thieves guild
my 2 thieves now have the same venoms as me when i activate them… but what does this give me if im fighting 1v1? as far as i can tell, you cant stack the DoT venom, and i’m guessing the other two conditions dont stack either
obviously in larger fights venom share is great for getting all your poisons on the enemy team but it looks like its not advantageous 1v1
or am i wrong?
i’m still fairly new to the game (pvp rank 8 ) and i’m playing a thief (because i like the abilities not cos im a cookie cutter fanboy!) and what i have noticed:
- pistol whip IS huge damage, plus the short stun and evasion is great BUT i’ve struggled to use it reliably unless i use immobilize/stun venoms. the 2 ability on sword is meant to immobilize but i think there is possibly a small gap when ppl can dodge and avoid the follow-up PW
people are saying you get 2-shot by PW or whatever… thats a bit extreme because the most i have crit a player with it is about 9k and that is glass cannon v. glass cannon. anyone who builds some toughness and a bit of hp will need AT LEAST 3 pistol whips, which is gonna take a bit longer due to initiative requirements, and in this time you can heal and blind etc.
- heartseeker spam is so lame, i have never played this spec cos its dull. definately should have its damage reduced considering the cheap cost
- death blossom spam is also lame for the same reason, but at least the jump isnt very big
- im having fun with a condition/power build with pistol/dagger combo so i can apply lots of bleeds with 1, vulnerability with 2 and venoms, a dodge on 3 and the nice bouncing dagger combo finisher on 4. using shortbow as well for kiting and killing mesmer clones
my only complaints about pvp atm:
- downed state is really really freaking annoying/lame imo. if i already beat someone i dont want them to still dmg and cc me or teleport about being a general nuisance. about 1/3rd of my deaths come from people i have already downed!
- guardians dont die in a reasonable amount of time with like 3 people on them. considering all sPvP is based on defending points that is too good. a friend plays a support guardian and if im with him we are both very hard to take down due to the combo fields that remove conditions, and the heals etc.
- i struggle to get the right mesmer, even when calling a target on them seeing as the just vanish and that removes it. i usually try to kill the clones first now but while you are doing this you are taking damage after all :\
tl;dr cookie cutter builds are lame, and downed state should bugger off
