Just a small update: The problem fixed itself when I got my first underwater pet and equipped it.
I created a sylvari ranger today and chose the fern hound. I am currently level 21. So far, I found a lynx, a pink moa and a krytan drakehound. I play with the lynx in slot 1 and the moa in slot 2.
Whenever I log in to the character or switch the map, slot 1 automatically resets to the fern hound.
