Personal Story Restoration update

My personal story log now says I am back on Chapter 7, Forging the Pact.

But the steps I am going through in the actual quests I am getting is Chapter 8 (I am up to Through the Looking Glass again). Will I actually finish my Personal Story if I keep going?

Should I be playing ranked?

Well.., if you go ranked, you don’t have to worry about playing on troll maps like skyhammer.

But more full premades tend to queue ranked vs unranked, so you may run into teams that stomp everything with voice comms more frequently, but it won’t happen all the time.

I go back and forth between them, but I like ranked more just cuz I hate skyhammer and spirit watch a lot.

What’s wrong with Skyhammer and Spirit Watch? These are my 2 favorite maps.

For some reason my win percentage is over 75% on Skyhammer, seems a lot of people don’t understand the strategy there.

Personal Story?

I have stopped after “The Source of Orr” for the last 3 months per the post instructions – “you must complete your story steps through the Source of Orr to begin chapter 8”.

However after logging in I seem to be back at the start of 7, “Forging the Pact”.

Is this as intended? Should I just play through 7 again?

Guardian's Appeal

The original appeal to me was the group buffs. I’ve always played a healer in my mMos (eq, daoc, gw1) or a caster (wow, bl2, tl2). So I decided to try melee for a change.

I actually found the play style very easy right from the get go, and I loved that. As I got into dungeons I loved that groups always loved having me. And when I got into pvp I enjoyed the synergy with other players along with solo survivability.

I still feel like I have a lot to learn about the class. You can play it in a variety of ways and you have interesting weapon choices.

So the appeal for me now is that it never gets boring.

New Guardian Tips? - What Should I Know?

Yes it’s a fun game. I also discovered it recently and am kicking myself.

One thing that isn’t explained in game is fields and finishers. If you haven’t read up on combos I suggest you do so. For example, greatsword 4 sets a field that can be finished by greatsword 2 and 3 and you get extra effects.
Worth checking in to.

Also do your dailies every day you can. A good source of mays, experience and items.

Even if you’re not a big pvper I highly suggest doing one or two matches every day. You get all sorts of great rewards very easily and it’s the easiest way in the game to get 3 exotic weapons quickly at 80.

Map voting is pointless.

Thank you Ghost! That did the trick. Now I am finally hitting things in combat without mashing, and I have more time to plan strategic use of skills. Whew. Took me a long time to figure out something so simple!

Thanks. Tremendously helpful.

One question. Tip 3 was “have auto-attack turned on”. Does this mean the right-click and hold CTRL thing?

I just reached 80 last week and have been enjoying pvp. Without even realizing it I earned my first title in the game (Gladiator). But several aspects of the game control which don’t bother me in pve drive me crazy in pvp because it is so much faster. I am sure pvp players have worked out these issues in gw2.
1. How can I follow another player? I can’t find any auto-follow hot key so in many fights I seem to be just swinging at empty air.
2. Are there ways to avoid being knocked down continually? In some fights I seem to be on my back continually – and worse, my timers often start all over again. Yet I don’t seem to have any such knockdown myself (I play a GS Guardian).
3. Is there a way to have my main attack keep hitting without mashing the 1 key? The tool tip says “ctrl plus right click” to autoattack but usually this either does nothing or stops after a couple of swings. When I mash 1 I can’t use my left hand to use other skills. and when I use my mouse for skills I stop moving.
4. Is there a fast way to determine an opponent’s class? All I see in their tag is a name. Sometimes someone in my pug will say “kill the thief” but then I waste 20 seconds looking for an obvious thief.
5. I play mainly unranked and there seems to be very little group strategy. Sometimes someone says “I’m going mid” at the beginning but that may be it for the entire match. Is this just the nature of unranked groups? The maps actually seem well -designed for strategy.

Thanks for any tips you can provide.

As a brand new player myself, this wasn’t my experience at all. The game is amazing, so many things to do, quite incredible. The pacing is just right I think.
Perhaps your expectations are getting in the way. I suggest letting them level on their own, they’ll love the game without your preconceptions weighing them.
By the way, if you really want to WvW, you can go gain access at level 1 from lion’s gate.

My only question – what is the NPE folks keep mentioning?

you are new, you are better off not knowing about npe

LOL. OK. I guess what I don’t know won’t hurt me. But my overall point is that I have found levelling enjoyable and pleasant, and very non-grindy (the only aspect I tried that I didn’t like was crafting).

If it was even better before something (NPE?) then I am jealous.

I think there are a lot of new folk like me who came in with the $10 special.

My experience as a brand new player has been very different.
Although I admit I love running around and exploring – this is a BEAUTIFUL game and the Vistas really show it off.
But levelling is really easy. Every zone gets you a level or two.
Dungeons give you nearly a whole level and you can do them in story mode and then a few levels later as explorable. When I tell groups I am a noob they are super nice.
Tomes of knowledge are everywhere.
And I found all the starter zones well populated.
Find a Guild or 2 or 3 – folks love helping – the game has been out 2 years.

My only question – what is the NPE folks keep mentioning?

Actually I thought it was interesting that when I completed the Web form to register this problem, Aneta has a link to this thread under “common isues”.

I am more concerned than I was initially about this issue because:

1. No one has come here and said their problem has gone away. It seems that once the log in bug strikes it is permanent.

2. Nobody has posted here that Support has solved their issue. So Aneta does not seem to have a solution yet.

If I am wrong about either of these observations please post here and correct me.

Dear Ashley Segovia,

I have been thinking about this all day during down time, as I’m a scientist and problem-solving is what I do.

What could cause the game to crash no matter which PC I run the client on, no matter which network I use, and even when I use a completely freshly installed version of GW.exe?

The only answer I can come up with is a login server error. I know during my WOW days that this was an occasional problem with Blizzard, sometimes requiring a login server reset.

Is it possible that your login server is somehow blocking, or not recognizing, certain accounts? I can’t come up with many plausible hypotheses, to be honest.

Thanks, looking forward to any updates you can share on whatever progress you’re making.

Hello Ashley,

I wonder if you have any progress on this bug which you can share with us?

I am hoping to get back into this game, which I just purchased 3 weeks ago, and finishing my very enjoyable levelling to 80 (I am 62 now).

Please let us now the status of our accounts as soon as you learn something,

Thanks

Was at my in-laws today and tried to log into the game on my Surface Pro 3 (which runs the game BEAUTIFULLY btw, and fast) and got this error. Tried all the suggestions above (fix admin, fix read only, repair client, etc. etc.) but still the sam problem. Figured it was a problem with the network at my in-laws, wasn’t worried.

Now home at my own PC and getting the exact same message. So clearly it isn’t the gw.exe file or the game client at my end. Something is going on with my account?

Not panicking because not playing my favorite game tonight isn’t the end of the earth, but I am mildly frustrated, was going to participate in guild missions tonight.

Oh OK. Yes, I’m on FA, a NA server.

You can also just add me as a friend in-game. Many thanks.
P.S. My toon is a Guardian, although in this game it seems like most professions work fine together in a group?

I just bought the game 2 weeks ago when it was on sale. Have enjoyed it greatly and am looking to start learning the early level dungeons now that I’m 50.

If you are also interested in grouping and learning the dungeons, leave a note here and we’ll get together in game. I know most players who run AC and CM now don’t want to be slowed down by noobs like me, so hopefully we can find 5-10 people who are prepared to learn the ropes.

I play most evenings from about 8-10 pm eastern time.

Take care,
Lyzandia

I was a GW player right from the start, loved the wonderful pvp tournaments, the Guild Halls, and the knockout arenas.
Just bought GW2 on sale, can you recommend a good guild(s) to look for once I get in?

Many thanks
