So if I bought the game between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 (the $60 digital deluxe addition) am I safe to prepurchase the $100 expansion, or do I have to wait for the infrastructure to be put in place for the reduction first? I’m not worried about how long it takes for it to go through, I just want to make sure I’m in the clear to buy it now and eventually see my money back. Thanks in advance for the help, and great job dealing with the situation anet!

The inherent problems with this release

Okay, where to start, I think the obvious way would be to allow people to buy the expansion without the base game pushing up the price. But if we agree that the base game is being included for free then two problems pop up, the base game is only being included for free if you don’t already own the core game, which makes no sense since this is being advertised in the gem shop as well, and there’s no other way to do an upgrade. For this it would be simple enough to either include an extra key so that you can share it with a friend, since it would help a.net expand their player base and maybe incentivize somebody else to buy the expansion, making an endless cycle of people passing on keys to friends, or, better yet, replace the free base game with a small bonus if you are instead upgrading your account, either gems or character slots which have no price to a.net anyway (notice I didn’t say cost because we aren’t talking about opportunity cost). But also it states that HoT is presumably worth $50, and while I have no qualms with an expansion being priced at what it’s worth, but I don’t think a single character, a single map and specializations are worth $50 when the base game costed roughly the same on release and included about 8 times as much content. Of course we haven’t seen truly all of what the expansion has to offer, which is a problem with pre-ordering, or pre-purchasing, and we don’t even know how long it will be until its actually release.

tl;dr: There has to be something included to make it feel as if people who already owned the game aren’t getting shafted, whether it be a price reduction, a key, gems, character slots or what have you.
