Throwing in my support here for Josh. Took me a fair while to get it down but once I had, it was a great feeling of accomplishment (probably rusty as it’s been soooooo long since my old platformer days).
More puzzles like this, please – it’s even got me more interested in doing the rest of the jumping puzzles…..until the Wintersday one comes out! (there is one for Wintersday, right?!)
And yes, I did rage hard when I failed countless times – but I stuck at it, improved little by little, made adjustments for the dodgy camera and big characters and won!
I would like to know if Josh can give us a figure on whether his estimated 5% completion rate was accurate or not. Any chance of that Josh?
Oh and PS – coming from that other game (cough wow cough) this halloween was done infinitely better (with the exception of the RNG on the skins – that was just plain wrong and greedy, imo).
Did this on my lil Asura, finally after several hours.
Raged like a boss for the first part of those, until I got it down to a fine art – from then on I still failed occasionally but loved the heck out of the design of it, the camaraderie of hanging out with several people (although I do think the groups were a bit too big).
Once I got to the first wait point I just jumped up and down a few times so I could track where I was and just went from there.
Fix the camera, and make the controls more responsive and I don’t think there would have been as many issues.
Looking forward to whatever is coming for Wintersday! (there is a JP coming for Wintersday?, please….PLEASE!)
Asura Ranger – No speed boost
4 Hours last night – got to the top a few times but didn’t know when to time to final leap. 1-1.5 Hours this morning and cracked it – done 5 times now.
Loving the design
@jimdove – you were on Excalibur? – that was EU wasn’t it? – I was on that server! – 2001-2004 I think it was
I mentioned in another post that I agree with people saying we shouldn’t just turn GW2 pvp into DAoC pvp, but I don’t see why we can’t take the good ideas and learn from it to make GW2 the ultimate pvp?
I don’t want any extra abilities, etc – like RR5 used to give you effective lvl 51 – and RR10 gave you so many extra abilities it was just too hard for others to compete. But I think titles like ‘Sea of Sorrows OMGIKEELYOU’ rather than ‘Sea of Sorrows Invader’ would be a neat addition that can do no harm and helps give those who want a sense of progression exactly that.
Also think Darkness Falls would be a neat idea – I know Mike has already commented on the possibility of something like that appearing.
I certainly think WvW has a ton of potential, it just needs some tweaking from Anet to make it reach that potential.
I’m not sure – I think there are some titles in there for things but people like the idea of a set of titles attributed to a general ‘realm point’ type system where you can be shown as ‘Sea of Sorrows OMGIMSOAMAZING’ rather than ‘Sea of Sorrows Invader’.
Or something like that anyway, I’m open to scepticism that people don’t want this game to just turn into DAoC but I don’t think we should ignore good ideas that Mythic had altogether. After all it’s still being played today, and if they hadn’t decided to go with the mistake that was Trials of Atlantis it may have been more successful for longer.
@Tzash
I think people just like the idea of the rank and title system, rather than the extra abilities system in DAoC. Having a Rank and Title system gives people things to aim for, which they can show off but doesn’t impact on the casual players who don’t WvW much and don’t want to WvW if they’ll get smashed by RR10 players.
In short – Ranks and Titles – Good! – Extra abilities – Bad!
@ sCor
The problem with your first suggestion is that MMOs are big international things now, so short of giving each zone their own set of servers it isn’t practical to penalise a server just because they have a good spread of WvW players 24/7 whilst the server they are playing doesn’t.
No, I don’t come from one of those servers – Sea of Sorrows is very much an Oceanic server – prime time we do ok as long as we aren’t zerged off the map but during the day it’s a different story.
I replied similarly in yet another one of these threads, I don’t know what the solution is – A.Net seems to want players to police themselves which is rarely going to happen since people stick (and head to) servers that are winning.
I’m sure (I hope anyway) that A.Net is taking all these posts on board and putting together plans to ensure it is running as smoothly as it can be – seeing as WvW was a big draw for a lot of players. It would be a real shame if it didn’t realise it’s full potential.
I think people are trying to work out what can be done now, though, rather than ‘I called it weeks ago’ :P
A ranking (and title) system wouldn’t fix the problem – it would be nice for people who like at least some form of progression (and also a Darkness Falls type place please!) but any new abilities gained is a total no no.
I actually kinda like the idea of removing the scoring system, or ‘hiding’ it and only showing it at the end of the match up or something.
The system is supposed to be based on DAoC, but there was no scoring system there. Then again there was no changing match-ups either.
The problem with the scoring system is that once a server gets fairly far behind, it gets hard to motivate people to continue trying. That can be easier to fix on servers with big alliances and active community populations but on other servers they will just give up and stop trying until the next match up. The situation then snowballs until the end of the match up and the score ends up being rediculous.
Removing the scoring system may help to alleviate this.
Either way, as SWTOR has shown Arenanet really REALLY needs to get on the ball and get the system running smootly in order to ensure it continues as those of us (like me) who love this type of PvP sorely want it to.
Haha :P
In all seriousness if I had the money I’d pick up the Commander title and give it a go, because at least people seem to listen sometimes to them. 100g is a lot of money though :P
Love WvW though, reminds me of DAoC so much. Just wish we could get SoS firing on all cylinders at the enemies rather than each other.
Caught the end of this, so didn’t really see what happened. Been in the SoS battlegrounds with Pelum before and they certainly seemed ok.
Then again, SoS is struggling at the moment – we never seem to have enough people in the right place being organised enough to do anything. And on top of that we have our own guilds going after each other. Instead of the INVADERS.
Almost makes me ashamed to be on SoS. No I don’t have a Commander title, and it’s hard to get people to follow directions anyway :/
@Kashak – I know, its a real issue… MAYBE, we should suggest making the points from the objectives they take worth LESS, say 15% of the overall points. That would solve everything.
Whilst it’s certainly a challenge, I don’t really think it’s far to penalise people who may just happen to be playing from elsewhere in the world. As an Oceanic on Sea of Sorrows quite often during the day (Australian time) we don’t do that well but in the evenings we peg it back once our main population comes on board.
The challenge sems to be getting enough international folks on each server so that each time period provides similar numbers. Unfortunately I don’t think the players themselves will do this as too many just like to stay where they are winning (a fairly natural human response)
‘Night-Capping’ was a problem in DAoC, however the MMO market was so much smaller in those days. Generally it was a massive majority of US folks on US servers and EU folks on EU servers so it was people who actually made the effort of getting up early to take relics, etc who caused the problem (and believe me I remember the whinging afterwards).
We now have a huge MMO market with true international bases, and I don’t see an easy solution.
