This was a good idea at heart but omfg did it not execute well. There was NOTHING wrong with the trait system before and the slow progression every level you got was very rewarding and made for an enjoyable experience.
The level you start to get traits is way too high (level 30?! really!?)
I just leveled an Ele to 40 recently and after FINALLY being able to use traits guess what….I can’t use any of them because they are locked. It was very frustrating but i thought “hey I might as well try and unlock the trait I want to use”. Well it required me to play WvW which I tried and cannot play due to my computers limitations and when there’s a large number of people like that it lags like crazy to the point where I have no idea what’s going on. So I can’t unlock it and I would have to spend a large sum of money AND skill points to get it from the trainer….
This has sucked so much fun out of the leveling system Anet has in place that I’m no longer interested in leveling my character until its fixed
Anet please…I beg you…fix this disaster
Thanks Guys! I felt like i was going to get flamed for this but I got some great feedback.
Glad to know im not the only SB lover
So after playing my thief for many hours I sit at level 47 and have come to a conclusion that I find every weapon set the thief has pretty kitten boring…..
except for 1…the shortbow
So I ask you guys this, is it possible to make a good PvE/WvW build for the shortbow as its focus with some other supporting weapon set. (more leaning towards PvE)
Please don’t mention other weapon sets that are “better”, I love my shortbow and want to use it as effectively as possible
Anet, im sorry but I found the problem to all of this. You have 2 developers working on this…..one more time…. 2 developers….seriously?
You need quite a bit more people focusing on these issues, as game balancing is one of the most important aspects of an mmo
You should have a small team AT LEAST to do game balancing. Yes, a team.
I love GW2, but the game I thought I would play for years to come is fading away really fast. I still believe in you, but things need to start going up…soon.
Ok im sorry, have you read the patch notes for the other classes??? Mesmers are still in a very good spot and ANET is not screwing u guys more than any other. Just look at engineers, elem, who got jack kitten this patch.
Does anyone have any idea of the actual time this patch is going to be released?
Im impatient

My best advice is to get yourself a S/D and pistol whip and black powder to win. It gives you great survivability, especially using signet of malice for the heal. This is a very comfortable set up that will let you PvE with ease and get used to the thief so when your a little better you can switch to a different weapon set.
Also get the catldrops as a utility, it’s insanely good as an AoE
I do agree that the sword seems to be a very good option when it comes to PvE and from all the suggestions i’ve tried S/P and S/D for the last 10 levels. I must say though that I dont understand S/P. Its…so….boring. I feel nothing like a thief, I just sit there PW and blackpowder until dead (it is quite effective though no question).
I have started a D/D condition build that Minion put on the Gw2guru forums but if I dont like it im going to go S/D. I agree with Tulisin about S/D, its effective and still makes me feel like im a thief
Again, thanks everyone for the input
I never played around with venoms yet in the game but the tics from weakness + signet of malice seems interesting. Im gona play around with it.
Wondering if its worth it to have less crit and more power via deadly arts for a build using a sword.
I like the idea of using the sword. Whats your guys opinion on S/P vs S/D since pistol whip is nerfed, but it may still be viable.
So I have been surfing the forums for a couple days trying to find all the info I can on a good, viable PvE build. The 3 most common builds are
- Backstab
- Condition
- Pistol Whip (now nerfed though)
I like to pick a main build and really focus on it for PvE, and what i cant seem to make a decision on it that Backstab builds seem to be glass oriented (maybe a tougher Backstab build would be fun), and condition builds require massive spamming of DB which isn’t much fun for me and seems to not do well in dungeons.
Hoping to get suggestions on builds that are a little different, maybe using D/P, S/D or a tougher backstab build maybe?
(ie. I actually do have trouble with pve, even though people will say I can do any build and win, mostly just trying to stick with one build I like)
hey Lavexis, could you share some insight on a decent build to use the D/P with? I wana give it another shot in PvE
Blazer, you seem to have a grudge on anyone who uses D/P, whats the deal
Based on your last comment im gona say you’re talking about pvp. Well guess what, thats not all what GW2 is all about. In pve it is quite good, great use of blinds, teleport for in-and-out, daze and still good damage.
You’re not the best thief in gw2, so stop acting like it
I just have to say that as a Guardian/ Thief user, I’m sorry rangers. I really hope they fix your weapons so they are actually good. I made a ranger and soon deleted it once I played with the weapons, which were all boring (it’s like they rushed making this class and didn’t think things through). I hope patches soon will make you a more viable class
Best of luck
I’m sorry but if you really think the hammer swings slow, play a freakin guardian with a hammer. The warrior hammer feel SOOO much faster…don’t complain
Besides be realistic, you don’t swing a hammer as fast as you swing a sword…its going to be slower
I have been using the hammer for the past 40 levels and haven’t looked back. I use it because I love it. I have not played pvp with it yet but it dominates pve. Just Agro a group of mobs and ur hammer reeks havoc. Also, survivability is INSANE. Protection up 80-100% of the time, yes please.
Goin for 0/15/30/20/5 crithammer of course
I also like it cus I feel unique compared to the hundreds of GS guardians out there

I know, lots of people hate the hammer and even though I use it I feel to needs to be changed to make it more fun, but do the same dps
For the skins I have to agree….wtf? Why do they all look so dull

You can still trait for symbols and use the hammer. Getting high crit and Arcristic (whatever it’s called). Healing trait. You do decent damage and have crazy survivability.
But I am just as kitten as everyone else, instead of buffing/ fixing major problems with each class they are nerfing things that didn’t seem like an issue or were not op (they seem for pvp focused). I have been reading in all the class forums and its universal that everyone’s kitten (except warrior which seems to be not op in Anets mind.....seriously?). For Christ sake the elementalist got nerfed.... the class that needs the most work.
Anet, you are pissing of the gw2 community and you need to start heading in the right direction or your fan base will go to another game
Thanks guys, i’m gona try sword and pistol, but first trying to use Death Blossom more (i was rarely using it before)
So I have a level 13 Thief and i’m having some serious issues with surviving in pve (common issue). I have read the threads on how to survive better so i know i have to
- Dodge as much as you can at the right time
- Use defensive utilities
- use skills that evade, blind, etc.
- circle your opponent when auto attacking for more a chance to miss
I use D/D and a shortbow. I know we’re a squishy class so I was wondering if I could get some advice on a good skill rotation, maybe a change of weapon combo, a change in utilities, or just a better strategy of playing the thief.
Utilities:
- Hide In the Shadows
- Assassins Signet
- Caltrops
Because thief’s use initiative that the problem for skill rotation, i don’t know when to use what skill and not just spam until its out.
Any help is appreciated
Brutaly, just gotta say that you’ve helped me out a lot. I’ve been running hammer from about level 30 (now 61) and love every minute of it. Love it when i’m with a pack of guardians and they all have greatswords and I got my dope hammer. Slowly building up my crit but i’m at about 32%
Just had to thank you, made my guardian that much more fun
