Wardrobe: Not As Innovative As You Think

Just letting you use dyes in the bank wardrobe should pretty much fix all of your issues. Then you can see all armors and dyes at the same time.

Basically. The whole post in a tl;dr format would be that ANet worked hard in implementing the wardrobe system and left the old preview system in the dust.

Which is why if they allowed dyes in the bank wardrobe (which uses the preview pane), it would pretty much be made redundant as a result of the new wardrobe system. Combining these two windows in some way avoids this and solves the problem without clogging up an already clunky UI (which is an entirely different issue).

Also I added a small pet peeve.

It’s innovative to me because for some odd reason, I care more about appearances in this game than any other that I’ve played so far. It really is a breath of fresh air from the old system.

All skins are unlocked for preview in the Wardrobe. Just visit your nearest banking facility and click the little Wardrobe doors.

You can mix and match any weapon and any armor, but it is true you can not preview dye there.

This is not what I meant. Technically, all skins, even unreleased ones, are unlocked. Just retrieve the code, and preview it. The problem is that it uses a separate preview window than the new and improved wardrobe previewing system. As mentioned elsewhere, you cannot preview dyes like this, and there is no way to merge changes across multiple preview panes. It was not what I expected from the wardrobe system when I first saw the release video.

Again, we should be able to preview the final changes of a character before spending time and coin into it. Many of us currently are, using online armor galleries and multiple preview panels, applying dyes to your real equipment just to see what it would look like; only to close the preview and start all over by right clicking and pressing “preview”.

There is no streamline way to conveniently preview equipment.; only roundabout ways that we’re doing anyway, and that’s why it should be changed.

I feel that the wardrobe system, while being an amazing concept in itself, isn’t intuitive at all. With this game based so heavily on appearances, I am deeply concerned about the game’s restrictive ways to explore new appearances (which was the whole philosophy of the wardrobe system, no?)

I will point out some of the flaws that tarnish this philosophy, followed by my suggestions; feel free to discuss.

  • There are too many preview panes that restrict creativity and informed purchases.

There is a preview pane for makeover kits. There is a preview pane for previewing linked items. Now with the wardrobe system a dye + wardrobe preview pane. Three preview panes; all independent of each other. This means you would have to have a separate pane for skins and dyes you do or don’t have. Not to mention if you don’t have a makeover kit, one of the panes aren’t even available to you. It is very frustrating to preview a final look if bits and pieces of it are on 3 separate windows. If the wardrobe system was implemented for players to explore new looks with ease, it has done nothing. I am sure some of you expected this wardrobe system to relieve all frustrations when dressing up your character, but left disappointed when it didn’t change much. It’s basically a fancier UI.

My suggestion is to merge all preview panes. How it is done is up to ANet, but I should be able to completely dress up my character in preview mode (including hair, face, body) as preview mode does not affect other’s gameplay whatsoever. Of course when you click “apply” it would only apply the said skins and if you had a makeover kit in the first place. This brings me to my second point:

  • “Wardrobe” is not really “wardrobe”.

All skins should be unlocked for preview. Having to refer to an online armor gallery shouldn’t be the way to look for new appearances. It’s ridiculous to be only able to preview skins that you have. It’s like if window shopping was made illegal. Making this change will only serve to improve the overall convenience of the preview system. Again, we should be able to completely craft the appearance in the preview system alone. It does not affect economy, gameplay, or anything of the like at all.

Side note: Any dual wield or back piece previewing is still kind of funky. If anything, this should be fixed immediately.

8/10.

The glow goes insanely well with your skin and clothing set. The dyes on the shoulder piece and the bottom seem mismatched, though.

Analogies don’t have to be 100% exact, I understand that. I did say somewhere in my post they had to be reasonably comparable, however. The analogy has to at least encompass the key points the situation implies. Otherwise, it’s inaccurate, and therefore, the point that comes with it is inaccurate as well.

Most situations being created here are obviously very unjust and don’t accurately represent a jumping puzzle situation, so how can I take points made by these analogies seriously?

I’m sure that many people such as myself aren’t buying the kit because they are not able to preview it.

Adding a preview option to this shouldn’t be seen as closing doors for sales, but should be seen as opening doors for an entirely new audience.

I don’t see how this would be a bad idea; all it does is help players make more informed decisions when purchasing things.

All arguments against portals seem to be along the lines of “if they didn’t put in effort, they shouldn’t get anything.”

What those people are missing out on is the real reward: the jumping puzzle itself. Jumping puzzles weren’t meant to be focused on the end prize; it is only used as incentive to get you going. Players are treated with wonderful content created by the devs and if you decide to skip it for the end reward, fine! I repeat, the end reward is negligible for a reason.

You could easily take the portal, secure your prize, and redo the puzzle normally if you so choose to reward yourself with the content. People who use portals know they are skipping content. And guess what? They’re missing out on the real reward.

Point is, I really wanted to end the “don’t deserve it” because the reward in question are actually two completely different rewards: end reward vs content.

Before making an analogy,
Make sure that everybody is on equal footing. Everyone has a choice whether to take the portal or not. In a technical point of view, this is in no way unjust.

Also make sure that it is reasonably comparable. comparing jumping puzzles to something completely out of its caliber is inaccurate. ANet makes rewards from jumping puzzles negligible for a reason. Not only that, when you compare it to something huge like legendaries or a job, more often than not, it does effect others, whether you realize it or not.

The job analogy would work if everyone had the choice to come an hour early and late, goof off, and still get paid the same. The economy must also be in the dumps so that your pay ultimately means nothing but to fulfill your sense of achievement.

Changing portals and adhering to the suggestion will only serve to induce rage within the community. With how they are now, they serve to promote a friendly, helpful community.

Some might argue that it doesn’t promote this because a few are against portals. That doesn’t work; the only reason one would be against portals is because it hurts one’s sense of achievement. Arguing that portals should be changed because it is wrong feeds one’s sense of justice.

Hurting the community on the basis on something so subjective like “sense” is, no matter how you word it, selfish.

One of the things that have always irked me about this game is the incompleteness of the preview page. You know, that page where you try on a new dye; or maybe that cool weapon your friend linked to you.

I’m sure these suggestions have been mentioned many times, but I just want to emphasize what a great improvement to the game these would be.

Please make the preview page fully customizable in terms of dyes. Each armor should have their own slots for dyes, just like the Hero page. This way, players will feel better about buying dyes, and in general, make more informed decisions when purchasing armor and transmutation stones. Players will also feel less restricted when testing multiple dyes. All in all, this will enrich the recreational aspect of the game dramatically.

On another note, previewing dual weapons would be a simple change that unlocks the preview page to an entirely new group of people; people who dual wield.

Lastly, please make previews available for the Self-style Hair Kit and the Total Makeover Kit. The reason players buy these kits (which are quite expensive) is to change something about their character that they don’t like. How exactly are players supposed to do that when they aren’t confident about the outcome? We want to know what we’re going to look like before we buy the kit; not after. We want to know if the changes we have in mind actually improve the look of our toon.

When it comes to purchasing something with either in-game currency or real money, there should never be any second guessing. With the current holes in the preview system, players are buying dyes, armor, and kits with the mindset of “this dye and armor combo might turn out okay,” or “this kit should fix up my face, hopefully”. Let’s change that by plugging these holes, ensuring that players make the right choice when it comes to their look.
