Just checking if you all are still active. I recently got back into GW2 and used to be a member of UM.
I’m sorry I meant weakness not vulnerability… so in that I agree with you Manticore.
In every other way I respectfully disagree with your opinions.
My build and playstyle utilizes the dagger offhand very well in power gear.. It allows me to tank PvE much better than the other choices in almost all encounters. I also use it heavily in WvW.
I simply meant that ignoring the great utility of a weapon because it has some bleed damage attached to it is foolish at best.
If anyone’s build does not need the specific utility the dagger offhand brings then don’t use it.
This does not make it a condition only weapon.
The other 2 offhand choices do not fit near as well to compliment the power build I use. Not say’n they are bad.. they just are bad for my build…
I will say your right about the focus, if you go to the forum and cut and paste a cookie cutter build, then you’ll want to use what it says .. In almost all cases the forums recommend the focus.
It might have been me.. Was the necro named Misha Stillgrave? Female human short in black and green robes? Was the necro tanking most of the time? (Well I tank it all but the bonus troll which hits very hard but is easily melee kited.) If so there’s a good chance it was me.
I run about 1-4 full clears of AC a day. I do it for the money and badges for PVT armor which I’m collecting for all my 80’s (for the hell of it). I also just enjoy running dungeons when I’m not in WvW with my guild. And AC exp groups seem to fill up the fastest.
I use D/D with Staff back up in my power build for PvE ,WvW, and SPvP.
On a side note offhand dagger is extremely effective in power build. Anyone that tells you other wise is just wrong…
Deathly Swarm is just amazing …. 3 bounce blind and 3 conditions transfer… why would any melee build NOT want this .. and on a fast CD…
Enfeebling Blood is just as amazing for a melee build.. 10 second ground target AOE fumble and vulnerability… which you can keep up 40% of the time… Again why would a melee build not want this ?
I’d take these two utilities over the other 2 off hand options for necro 95% of the time.
I will cede that the secondary effects are condition based bleeds on both attacks, which do enjoy the condition build stats.. but they are very effective with any stats for the above reasons..
If your using either of these attacks for the bleeds attached to them and not the utilities they offer .. your doing it wrong
I tested this myself. I always thought the LOS/obstructed was more aggressive on my mesmer compared to my other characters post-patch. I could never actually prove it to myself till now. Your video showed an easy spot to get to with the perfect terrain features to test it.
Thank you Tekla!
Now on to the details…
All tests were done on human females shortest stature possible. (all my 80’s) Using the 1 auto-attack
The spot I picked to stand for the test which was at 1200 range, maximum distance. I was extremely careful to have each character stand in the exact same spot.
Guardian /scepter = hit
Necro/staff =hit
Warrior/rifle = hit
Warrior/longbow =hit
Mesmer/greatsword = obstructed
All the ranged attacks were considered projectile aside from the mesmer GS.
Thank you Wads for pointing this possible variable out.
So I rolled a level 1 elementalist and bought a staff.
elementalist/staff fire, water attune = hit
mesmer/greatsword = obstructed
I did not level the elementalist to open earth attune which is a projectile.
the water and fire attune are both not listed as projectiles in the help box and take a direct line trajectory to the target. Just like the mesmer greatsword 1 attack.
Quote from Tekla:
“The funny thing is, if you do use mirror blade, your attack would actually land”
I verified this, mesmer greatsword 2 follows the same results as all the other test subject’s attacks. It only obstructed when I moved forward to the spot where all attacks obstructed. This is also important because it is an illusion summoning attack.
Tekla posted:
“Issue seems to be the greatsword size along the mesmer attack stance animation, in fact; the beam starting line seems to be somewhere far ahead the greatsword extremity point.”
I agree with this and did what i could to test it…
Although I can not dig into the code and verify this. I did attempt to emulate Tekla’s Idea by moving all the test subjects forward to where the greatsword line appears to be at start of the attack animation. This was considerable when looking at the changes in attack angles.
From here the results were the same, all hit.
I had to move another few feet forward beyond where the visual imaging of the great sword attack makes it start to get obrstuction to all test subject’s attacks.
During this speculative part test I was able to use mesmer scepter 1 (900 range) as well. It hit like all the rest of the test subject’s attacks. It did not get obsturcted until all other attacks did. I find this very important as mesmer scepter 1 is in fact a clone summon.
The results are quite clear…….
test summary:
ALL 1200 range 1st slot attacks from the same spot on the same target with target in the same position. Projectile and non-projectile attacks used. (removing the projectile variable from the test)
ALL tests performed on the same race/sex/stature(height) character model. (removing these variables from the test)
All had the same LOS results with hits except the mesmer greatsword which was obstructed.
Classes tested
Warrior-rifle-longbow
Necro-staff
Mesmer-greatsword
Elementalist-staff-fire-water
Mesmer-scepter
1 or more of the following is happening.
Mesmer greatsword attacks 1,3,4,5 all use a starting point far in front of the character’s visual image to calculate LOS. (Tekla’s Idea)
or/and
The position of where GS attacks 1,3,4, & 5 originate has changed within the games physics due to changes in the patch.
or/and
The incorrect physics were always present and with the addition of a LOS requisite we have just become aware of it.
or….
The other option is that Anet willfully “ninja-nerfed” mesmer greatsword attacks 1,3,4, & 5. I can’t see them doing this because greatsword 2 seems to use the correct physics (or at least the same physics ALL other classes enjoy). Why not change GS2 aswell?
Conclusions…..
There is obviously an issue currently with mesmer Great Sword LOS. Anyone is able to reproduce these errors in game right now…
We really need this fixed ASAP
(edited by Mortayia.7651)
GS is really the way to go here for solo PvE roaming .. I carried a scepter shield off set for when i needed some breathing room on a vet or champ kite on DE’s.
On a side note you can PL yourself 30ish levels pretty quickly with jewel, cook, and artifice (potion) crafts. It takes few gold , depends on market prices but is quick and easy. Lots of guides for this on goggle. So if your goal is max level quickly I’d get to 48-50ish then PL the last 30 with crafts.
Is this for a AH/might build?
Most sword specs (mine included) were centered around the synergy of AH and vigor/might procs. You could get alot of them with sword in a hurry. The nerf on the vigor proc rate seriously undermined the tank-ish-ness of this build.
If your dead set on crit then here’s what I ran for a while pre-nerf…
For a good mix of crit & crit damage with P/V/T included I suggest Knights armor, Valk Jewlery, pack runes, and then flavor your sigils / weapons to taste (accuracy sigils for crit chance. zerk, knight, or soldier weapons) weapons and sigils really all depend on what you are try’n to accomplish and your build..
With the above I was able to hold the following stats unbuffed—
(yours may vary and depends on your build and weapons sigil load out)
2.9K armor
15K health
2800-3000ish attack
40% crit
30% crit damage
might/vigor/swift/fury procs almost on CD
These stats aren’t great due it’s fingers in many pies ( 5 stat focus vs 3 stat focus_)and it was made for AH pre-nerf in mind. You won’t be face tanking with this anymore but it may be what your looking for.
This is pretty easy to get with rares and will give you a decent idea of how if feels to drive for a few gold before upgrading to exotics.
I personally switched to full PVT hammer myself ..
Wow … I never thought I would see a game developer sticky and endorse a third party site to “band-aid” a serious enjoyment destroying lack of function in game AND give no indication that a fix is even in the works…
Really??
This sounds more like a punch line to a bad joke than a good example of how to treat your customers…
I mean who doesn’t enjoy spamming LA map chat with LFG requests wasting your play time ? I know I sure do!
Like any PvE dungeon skill is important but knowing the dungeon is equally if not more important. (IE boss abilities, trap locations, and mob spawn points.)
Traps have static spawn points. Once you know where the traps can be it becomes much easier. Also the trapped halls in AC2 (and just about all dungeons) are not races, stay calm, watch where the traps spawn, and look for the timing. There is always a way through if you keep a level head.
As far as getting hit by Bosses, it just takes practice to learn their abilities and dangers. All players, no matter skill level, will get hit sometimes, the RNG will own us all now and again. The trick is to go into the encounter armed with knowledge of what the boss can do and minimize the chances of getting stuck in these bad situations.
Group kicked- Your group should have known up front, by bringing a lower level character, your production or dungeon specific knowledge could be less than an 80. I frequently allow non-max characters in group if they need it. Keep in mind though, bring lower level party members usually equates to bringing less production of the group as a whole (compared to bringing an 80).
So while I understand why they might have kicked you … I greatly disagree with the way they handled the situation. Some explores take higher damage and/or group knowledge to clear. IMHO AC 3 takes more than AC 2-1.
The point is the abuse you received from them as “baddie” and the “kick” should have been handled better. Unfortunately allot of PUG groups have 1-3 of these net-bullies in them. My best advice to counter this is to find some friends or a guild with like interests and have some fun.
In a nut shell just take your time, keep a cool head, and practice the dungeons. You’ll get better as you become more comfortable with said dungeon.
@Yukishiro, completely agree with you .. Culling is a game breaker rather it’s 50% cull or just 5%. invisible enemies kill people.
On a side note..
I have recently had my main gaming rig’s mother board fail.. I was completely shocked at how badly WvW plays on a average gaming computer (my back up computer). On this back up rig, which is WAY above min spec (3.4G quad core, 8 GB ram, 860 nvidia card, BLAH BLAH BLAH )WvW big battles and keep takes / defenses are unplayable… lag, slow rendering, and then on top of that the sweet sweet culling.
Further more, In game settings to have zero effect to mitigate these slow rendering / client lag issues. yes I have even tried puting everything to lowest/min/off settings. I feel very sorry for those stuck on these lower than cutting edge computers.. Oh and I can’t even imagine what it’s like on a min spec rig or anything close to that .. It has made my main love in this game, WvW, a nightmare of invisible enemys and blind guessing.
Before I hated the culling issues, thinking what could posibly be worse than this?!? ..
now I know..
I can’t imagine how Mythic could run MASSIVE RvR battles10 plus years ago with out this issue and Anet, a decade plus later, has “intimate relations with a canine” on such a HUGE GAME BREAKING issue.
Don’t get me wrong .. I want to see culling fixed ASAP.. I just hope they fix WvW so more players can play and enjoy it … Not just those that can afford rigs that cost as much as a older used car.
Anet is well aware of this long standing issue … WvW players have dealt with this game breaking problem for what feels like two months now ..
I am sorry that the PvE crowd got to enjoy it also. The silver lining is PvE players only deal with it durring massive events. WvW players enjoy this poor game design every minute of their play time.
I do feel sorry for those that read the minimum system req. and thought they could play the game.. If your system is not high end you get client side rendering issues ( reguardless of in game settings) PLUS the culling… and that’s yuckie!
I heard supply camps have the best cookies..
I’d really really like the commander icon to have an option to make it only veiwable by guild/friendlist members. That way it doesn’t draw the keyboard licking zerg and allows visability to the players you want.
@ Stark
It’s a shame you decided to come right of the gate with blanket name calling .. Some of your points were rational.
Spvp-
I agree with you, as does the general thoughts of most posters… minus the fringe extremists ofcoarse.
WvW-
rendering issues are still serious (I have 2 gaming rigs. one cutting edge tech, one above average tech. both well above reccommened specs. both still have renering issues, although less than before the last fix.) Zerging, most find this more efficient in WvW and DE’s. Obviously there’s a better, more effective way, we all know this. We’d like to see that better way be better rewarded. Right now it is not. (defending, support, tactical play)
Dungeons-
I agree with you.. let’s wait and see how they are going to change loot tables. I enjoy dungeons even though they are a bit easy once learned .. but that’s the same with every MMO.
Personal story-
there are many instances that have known bugs. Some storylines hit birckwalls and can’t be completed at the moment due to quest bugs. ( search “Hatchery” for example ). I was very happy with the variant difficulty of the personal story and enjoyed solo’n the lines (kinda like reading a book), well on the ones that weren’t quest bugged.
PvE-
agree with you mostly.. I do have some issues with all the Invunrability/LOS/ Skill bugs. I think these are not game breaking though just really annoying .
GW2 is a remarkable effort of
game designing.
its missing a lot of important things; better dungeon, more strategic teamwork.
but it does so many things greatly.
Well said, this mirrors my thoughts.. I hope they fix it. I’d like to keep this game as my hobby for a long while yet.
(edited by Mortayia.7651)
I agree with Sebyos and Teviko on all the issues they pointed out in this thread.
I’d also like to thank them for taking the time to point out the issues that mirror my own feelings on the game’s current state in a rational, polite way. Thumbs up for keeping it on the high road and ignoring those less than rational / polite replies.
One reply I will make:
How I miss the gaming days before forums… People either liked a game or didn’t, they didn’t ask the devs to change it to cater to how they thought the game should be.
(This is an assumption based on my thoughts and from reading the threads, It will not reflect the motivations of all “I have an issue posts”. I do think it reflects the heart behind this one and ones like it.)
Posts and replies like this take time to create. We post on glaring issues such as these, so they get proper attention and are hopefully rectified. Players would not spend the time, thought, and passion on posts like these if they were not attempting to help a game they care about.
None of us want to see Guild Wars 2 added to the list of “MMOs that had great potential then withered away”.
We are not asking for something to be customized to a few players paticular liking, We are asking for general issues/concerns that effect the longevity/loyalty of this product’s customers be addressed before this MMO gets added to the previously mentioned list.

I agree with the OP completely. I’d assume more players feel the same way. There is a serious lack of longterm depth, purpose, or entertainment to this game once 80 is hit (IMHO).
Some players may enjoy the lemming zerg packs in WvW or PvE and for these players I say “great, have fun”. I require more depth than that to jiggle my “fun meter”.

Got a few Messages , thanks… Hoping to find a good fit on server If I can.
[Darkhaven] PvE & WvW player(fulltimer) Looking for a home (guild)
in Guilds
Posted by: Mortayia.7651
Greetings,
I am looking for a guild that matches my playstyle/preferences. I am looking for a long term relationship with said guild. I am not a guild-hopper, nor am I interested in playing with players that are. It’s hard to build trust and tactics if your working with different people every day. Anyways …. On to what I’m about and what I’d like from you …
-Me-
Age 37
Play Style- Min/Max’er focusing on unorthodox builds and tactics to keep it fresh and fun. I utilize common builds for common purposes though IE farming and such. Support / Logistics / Tatical roles prefered yes I know the game mechanics punish players for performing these roles, I still think they are helpful to the total war effort. Willing to spec to fill what ever role is needed for the good of the guild.
Gaming Exp:
PvE-
EQ1- Raider, learned alot about group dynamics here. Played through Velious Left for DAOC
EQ2- Raid Leader for a casual-progression guild (2 nights a week) Left to back to WAR
WoW- Co-Raidleader for a progression raidguild (30 plus hours a week here, yuck) Daled it back to 2 nights and finally benched myself due to burn out I was and still am bored with this game. I keep going back to it because I have alot of friends playing it.
PvP/RvR-
DAOC- Worked up to alliance commander, played Mid. Still LOVE this game. Left to play with friends in other games, population drops, and WAR!
WAR- I LOVE RvR … LOVE IT, now that that is out of the way.. I have played this game on and off since it’s release. I hold the position of Main Assist in our Guild Warbands and many PUG WB’s as well. (this is loosely RvR’s equivilant to commander in WvW or Raidlead in PvE). Left (kinda) the population keeps dropping. Account still active.
Eve- Solo Merc for hire. I have had sperts where I played religously but after so much time the credits basicly made themselves. It takes money to make money and all that. This was kinda like my vacation game from leadership in other games or what I like to call babysitting /grin.
RL- yes I have one. I own my own business and work from home. I have 3 daughters that live with me. I have a new granddaughter that I watch too. While this allows me to be in game alot, some of that time I will be semi-afk or full afk. I have little interest in any leadership positions due to lack of quality time I have for recreational gaming. I
am fully aware of the time and effort true decent guild leadership requires. I respect those that do have the time to do it. It’s just not for me ATM. I’ll happily help in anyway I can though.
Ok, so if you made it this far….. here’s what I’m looking for listed by requirements and then
wants/preferences:
Requirements-
1) Guild Voicechat, no not some freebie welfare VC either.. Vent strongly prefered
2) Mature Members, I’d prefer not to baby sit or have to deal with childish drama
3) Strong, Guild-centric, Longterm Goals and Ideals / I’m looking for a “by the guild
for the guild” philosophy.
4) Established, I am not looking for any leadership roles. I do not want to build a
guild from scratch. The foundation must already be in place. If I wanted
these things, I’d be making my own guild instead of joining yours.
5) No Botting, Exploiting, Hacks, Gold Buying, or Player Greifing. I will report
your no skill, scrub face ASAP.
Wants/Preferences- these things aren’t manditory but .. well .. I prefer them
1) Leadership and/or Officers on most of the time. Somebody needs to be steering
the ship.
2) Medium sized rouster. Enough members to get stuff done but not so many that
90% of the guild is strangers to you and or me.
3) Active Daily Activities. I’d like to be able to hop on and help out who ever with
what ever.
4) Selfsufficent Members. I’m a person who likes to “EARN IT”. I expect the same
from my Guild Mate’s. No beggars or whinners please.
5) Darkhaven world/server, I have already built a bank guild here and am close
to maximum bank space on it for storage. I’d prefer not to lose this
investment of time and resources. I’d consider it for a great fit though,
the guild bank storage could always be rebuilt.
Ok well if you made it this far and I seem like your type of player or if you have
any questions PM me or post here please.
