Misleading directions in story line

To get to the Set To Blow story line, I am directed by the quest locator to Fort Trinity and then am unable to take the portal because it is behind a locked door. This was especially inconvenient since I went from Sparkfly Fen to this Fort Trinity to take this portal which then I couldn’t. My storyline is clear across the map at Harathi Hinterlands so the quest locator led me clear out of my way.

So like most people, I’ve ended up with a mixture of socks, hats and sweaters. Is there any easy way to swap so I have all of one kind of item? Of course, I have a bunch of the 3 types and yet not enough of any one thing. Was anyone really into it enough to calculate which item was the most economical to collect and spend?
