In the ‘next mission’ dialogue of Triskell Quay, selecting the follow-up mission requires confirmation through two dialogue options:
– I’m ready to choose (from top-level dialogue)
Then
– Direct information is best. I’m going to work with you to summon Alastia’s spirit
In the ‘join an order’ dialogue of Speaker of the Dead, selecting an order requires a single dialogue option:
- I’d like to join the Vigil. Let’s start by taking on Kellach! (from top-level dialogue)
Choosing the next mission requires a confirmation dialogue. Choosing the next 30 or so missions does not.
This is not a non-issue. I recently completed speaker of the dead, and intended to choose Vigil. However, I like reading through all the dialogue. I’m talking to Josir, and ask “Can you tell me more about the Priory first?” : “What would I be doing for the Durmand Priory?”. From there, I go “Can I ask another question?” and choose the second option.
“Can I ask another question?” should take you back to the list of questions, right? No, it takes you back to the top level (this happens a LOT without seeming rhyme or reason, and while not usually game breaking it IS irritating). OK, at least the “join an order” dialogue will have a confirmation option, right? Oh, apparently not. OK, then if I log out of the character and back without selecting a mission reward or leaving the instance in it will force me to replay the mission, maybe? No such luck, the DB flag has been set. Restore from last save? Heh, it’s an MMO.
Bugs and issues:
- “back” options are inconsistent throughout dialogue trees. In general, if I’m presented with a list of questions, choose one, and then go “ask another question”, I want to go back to the list of questions, not to the root.
- game-changing options should have confirmation dialogues. It’s rather silly for per-mission dialogues to have confirms, but game-path dialogues to not. (In fairness, this one surprised me because every other choose-a-path dialogue I’ve seen does give you a chance to back out).
Another way of doing this would be to have the PC speak to the main NPC after making the choice. Eg: I speak to Logan / Traherne / etc, then choose an order representative, then speak to Logan / Traherne / etc again with a final dialogue of “So, you’re doing X”: Yes / No, that doesn’t sound like such a good idea. However, this would require adding an extra dialogue interaction to hundreds of quests, rather than just fixing a couple.
- (lesser issue): in a game which sells itself about “your story”, there should be some way to go “no, that’s NOT what I wanted to do”, at least before the story progresses. An option in the “my story” window to “replay last mission” (with a notification at the end that “you have already received the rewards from this mission”) would be awesome, but there might be a simpler way of doing it.
(One thing that I really appreciated with the later HoM updates to Guild Wars EotN was the ability to replay story missions, and especially cut-scenes.)
