Much improved, thanks Anet!
FOV, for me nothing else comes close. The narrow field of view makes me feel claustrophobic and makes playing very fatiguing. Apparently, Anet is nearing a fix for this, we’ll see.
This is outstanding news that Anet is nearing a fix for the FOV problem! this has been the Achilles Heel for GW2 and has preventing me from playing a lot so far.
First off, I would like to thank Jon Peters/ArenaNet for addressing the FOV issue and for offering reasons why he think the cons of increasing FOV outweigh the benefits.
Do I agree with his conclusions? No, I don’t.
While I’m not getting nauseous, I do have an “uneasy” feeling while playing—leaning into the screen, fatigue etc.—I think due to the low FOV. I think this vague unease is being experienced by ALL players even if they may not be fully conscious of it. If so, people will over time find themselves playing less and less partly because on some level they just don’t feel comfortable while playing. In my view, this unease outweighs the three points made against widening FOV.
Perhaps I’m wrong and the camera smoothing will do the trick. I certainly hope so.
I think FOV is the number one issue facing the game.
It’s subtle but powerful and makes me feel claustophic playing. I’ve never really been able to marvel at the scenery as I’m usually just lookin at the few feet of dirt in front of me. People are not going to keep playing a game which makes them feel vaguely uncomfortable or even nauseous.
If Arenanet thinks this is a good tradeoff for pvp reasons, jump puzzles or whatever, fair enough, but I’d at least like a statement.
OP you are really provoking me with your post. In rl I am 6’ 3" 208 lbs, with a beard and sometimes wear plaid. I also have two girlfriends (who know of each other’s existence) and YET I like the purple butterflies. In fact it’s the purple butterflies which drew me to the class to begin with. What exactly are you trying to say?
Definitely too narrow. The narrow field of view makes the game feel claustrophobic to me. There must be some advantages to such a narrow FOV, I’ve heard so as not to see into keeps, but I think the overall feel to the game is paramount. Hope they widen it!
This is great news that the camera issue(s) are going to be addressed. This is hands down going to be the biggest improvement to the game.
I’m not an expert, but it appears the FOV is far too limitted, making for a claustrophic feeling while playing. Although I don’t exactly get dizzy or nausiated, I do find myself leaning into the screen and getting a stiff neck. Being comfortable while playing the game, while subtle, is of top importance.
But other games have them.
Hey does anyone know why there are no server forums? It would help build community I think.
This is an excellent thread and I hope Anet’s can make a comment on this issue and hopefully fix it—they’ve created a brilliant game, but I think the FOV may be the game’s Achilles Heel. I have not been suffering headaches exactly, but I feel fatigued playing and find myself leaning into the screen and getting a stiff neck. I have a vague cramped feeling and now I know why.
