I also have a graphic design background and I don’t know what program you’re using but even with Photoshop set to use 5gb of ram as processing speed it still renders brush strokes slowly and I find it irritating.

Interesting… perhaps something in the software? I regularly use Photoshop with 300-500 dpi as well with no problems at all. It only starts slowing down if I use brushes that are bigger than 900 pixels, but anything smaller than that is fine.

You could try starting out at a smaller scale, then re-sizing it to 300 dpi before adding final details. This way you’re able to cover the blurriness with your detail work, and won’t need to use huge brushes for big swathes of colour/texture.

I’ll be doing something for this contest as well. Looking forward to seeing all the finished entries!

We want to use this image for our book cover.

Yes, there will be a problem since it’s a screenshot from the game. If you’re planning on selling that book, it’s a commercial use for it, and generally companies don’t like their content being used freely to make money for other people. Anet is very strict about their policies, and they won’t allow using their property for other people’s commercial use.

My suggestion is hiring an artist to draw the cover for you, and you can give them the screenshot as a reference (don’t make them copy it exactly, just tell them that you’d like something with a similar pose/character/background). If you’re planning on getting the book published through a publisher, they usually have contacts for several good artists. If you’re self-publishing, you can look through art pages, for example http://www.deviantart.com, for any artists that you like the style of, then see if they have open commissions.

It’s always a good idea to commission a good artist to do the cover. Most people pick up a book based on how interesting the cover looks, and only afterwards read the back. If the art on the cover is awesome they might buy it rather than something that has a less interesting cover.

Thank you for the comments!

hiddenson: yes, submissions are still welcome. We have all of the days filled up now, but there might be a case of an artist not being able to finish their submission on time… so I’d love to get an extra artwork or two just in case something happens. Of course, all extra artwork will be shown on the 24th, so it will still be in the calendar.

Waiting for the holidays? Wishing it was Wintersday already? Here’s a little something put together by the art community in GW2Guru and GWOnline forums – a Guild Wars 2 Wintersday-themed advent calendar!

It features new artwork by different artists each day of the month, all the way to the 24th of December.

We are still accepting submissions for two of the days, so if you’re interested, let me know by replying to this thread or sending me a message.

Wintersday calendar project

Yes, I know it’s a bit early to be talking about Wintersday with Halloween celebrations just around the corner. However, this project would need time to get done, so here goes!

Several years ago the lovely artists from the GWGuru/GWOnline forums banded together to make an awesome Wintersday advent calendar. The idea was to showcase a new art piece starting from December 1st all the way to December 24th, to make it easier to endure the long wait until Wintersday (and yes, Christmas). You can view the old calendar here: http://shinanai.org/wintersdaycalendar/

The question is: How many of you would be interested in doing this again, this time for Guild Wars 2?

The project already has 11 artists who are interested in joining, but it would be nice to get a full 24 artists taking part. Drawings, screenshots, short videos, poems, everything creative is welcome! It’s a way to wish happy Wintersday to all your fellow gamers.

This will also have threads at the GW2Guru forums and the GW2Online forums. If we get more than 24 participants, well… then we’ll have surprise days with more than one art piece being shown!

Attachment is a drawing from the previous calendar, done by Piglou from Nolani, GWGuru.
