I guess the style I’m going for is sort of a bruiser as I mentioned. Strong and tough, does moderate damage yes but certainly isn’t a striker or offensive powerhouse. In the past I ran a much more offensive set-up (glass cannon basically). I could pull off great damage quickly, but also went down just as quickly when anyone looked my way. I feel like the build I’ve got now is more effective for a melee combatant who tends to be on the front lines of large group battles.
I just wasn’t a big fan of hammer. I originally tried hammer + axe / warhorn. The hammer play style didn’t seem to fit for me very well. I have however been loving axe / shield.
I guess my question is more about traits. I’d like some suggestions on how I could be as effective as possible in my role, while switching to include 15-20 points in the discipline line. Does anyone have opinions on excluding Defy Pain or Vigorous Shouts?
I recently came back to my warrior after taking a break to play mesmer (I know crazy, but I’m having FUN). I mostly run WvW with my guild. Usually I’ll be in a medium to large group charging in on the front lines. We take objectives like keeps and towers mostly. The goal that I have for my warrior is to be able to disrupt the enemy lines and engage their attention to take damage away from other members of the group. I never really solo roam with my warrior and that is not my goal.
Below is the build that I put together and I’ve been feeling fairly effective using. I deal with conditions through shouts combined with 6x soldier runes as well as warhorn trait. I enjoy the “bruiser” feeling and playstyle that this build gives me, as well as the mobility of the offset sword and warhorn.
What I’m looking for input on is this. Ideally I’d like to put 15 points into the discipline line for fast-hands (maybe 20 for mobile strikes). However, I’m not sure where best to take these points from. Clearly I’ve got 10 to take away from the strength line. But for the remaining 5-10, what are your suggestions?
I’m wondering what some good builds are to best support my team and improve their survival and my own.
I chose to play a more support focused, 0/5/30/30/5 build on my guardian personally. I use mostly knights armor with a few pieces of pre/vit/HP. My primary weapon is hammer, secondary is mace/shield. My individual reason was that I also have a warrior to fulfill the “top dps” role when my group needs that. I wanted to have a noticeable change of pace when playing my guard. Ironically, I tend to feel more effective on my support focused guardian, even though the numbers may not back that up.
I’m not arguing that focusing on dps is not a good form of team support and survival. I’m only addressing the OP with what I have personally found fun and effective.
I just finished leveling my guardian to 80 (seriously, 2 days ago). I used a variety of builds during lower levels but around level 70 went solely for a tanky altruistic healing, shout build.
I found that with this build you can face tank groups of 3-4 and the veterans mobs that you’ll encounter while leveling rather easily. I believe this build is “effective” because leveling is easy (in fact amazingly easy compared to some other professions) and when you group for events you bring the ability to absorb damage, heal, and apply boons.
I’m in the same boat as the OP. Rolled a new Thief and am looking for a guide with tips and advice geared towards leveling/pve.
I understand that many people don’t think advice for leveling is needed. However, I find the thief to be a very different play style from the other professions and would just like to find input on how to be effective.
Walls of text! OMG. Use knights armor, Berserker weapon. Mix of knights/berserker trikets with berserker jewels. Thats the best build. It gives a good balance of defense and power. Or use the karma soldier armor found in Orr and mix it with knights armor same trinkets as the 1st one.
Runes is doesn’t mater, use solder runes for condition removal, Rage runes for crit, or strength runes for power are all good. Do not use berserker armor.
This advice is not in line with how to properly maximize your stats. The recommendation that I see most is Knights for chest, legs, shoulders, and weapons. Then Berserker for hands, feet, helm, trinkets and jewels.
The reason for this is that you give up too many stats if you run crit damage on your chest, legs, shoulders, and weapons to make it optimal. However, the return from having crit damage on hands, feet, helm, trinkets and jewels is much better.
For trait builds I have had a lot of success running variants of Yojak’s build. The theme is using either sword or axe with warhorn for primary weapons and a rifle for secondary. With using signet of rage, warhorn trait, and increased boon duration you will have permanent swiftness which is very useful for world completion as you will be running around a lot.
The builds I use are 0/25/0/20/25 for sword, and 20/0/0/20/30 for axe. Obviously these builds are more offensively geared but that is my preferred play style. I didn’t find healing shouts to be as beneficial as having additional damage traits.
I used to wield dual axes but noticed that I didn’t use axe 4 and 5 very much. Even when I did use those skills, it was usually more worthwhile to just auto attack anyways. I started equipping a warhorn some time ago and haven’t looked back since.
I use a 20/0/0/20/30 trait build with mainhand axe. Being able to remove conditions frequently is a big blessing in groups and solo play. Also using warhorn 4 with signet of rage you get unlimited swiftness which is very useful for exploration, farming, and wvw.
I tried running sword/warhorn for several weeks. I also enjoyed this combination however your damage is hindered if even a single other person is using a bleed build.
I mostly play pve with a bit of WvW thrown in. I had been running a standard glass cannon axe build but I noticed that I never really used the off-hand axe skills. That being the case I decided to try this build a try.
I like it, and it adds a lot to game play over a standard dps build. I lost a fair amount of crit (from 50% to 35%) but I feel like my damage is still very solid. I also have quite a bit more hp and feel like I bring a lot more tools to group fights.
I was thinking of dropping from 30 points in tactics to 20 though as the heal from shouts doesn’t seem too great. Anyone have thoughts on where the 10 points could go, or shoulkittenep the trait to cause shouts to heal?
I recently started using a high damage dual-axe build. Nearly all of my gear is berserkers which gives the most appropriate stats for axes (high power, good precision, crit damage). Keep in mind that even if you are at 100% critical chance, without power to support those swings your damage will be lacking. My preference therefore, is to have a “good” precision stat but to put more emphasis on power.
While the damage is great for a build like this, a high level of awareness is required if you want to stay alive. I’m talking about exploration dungeon runs here, where much damage is avoidable however being melee means you’ll eventually take hits regardless. If you find you’re being downed too often, it’s reasonable to add in some power/vitality/toughness equipment.
