I just got a new, powerful laptop. First thing I loaded (after Firefox) was GW2. I was so excited to see it in something other than minimal vid mode…it launched…and I can’t find the cursor. It’s there….the characters light up as it glides over them, but I can’t see the cursor at all.
Any suggestions what could be going on? (Pookii asks hopefully.)
OMG…dare I admit…never chalk up to computer glitch that which can be adequately explained by player stupidity. I don’t know WHY I continued to pick up past 250 yesterday, but I suspect that’s why the bag didn’t show the last time I went into the green waterfall shop, when the expansion bag didn’t show as an offering. Going in with absolutely empty packs …there it was. I went out, killed a bunch of stuff and got it. I’m sure all will be well now.
I THOUGHT I’d bought it because it didn’t show, but probably I was hallucinating. That’s what happens when you play weird offshoots of a game late at night.
Thanks everyone and sorry to waste your time. (slinking off into the sunset…)
Yup…this is the only character I’ve used, and I’ve never done it before. Sigh… First time around was before my time.
It’s lost my purse. Not only that…it won’t let me buy another. Grrrr….Not the first time my account has lost purchases. ANet says nothing they can do. Grrrr…… At least the mystery is solved. Don’t know how I’ll buy the expansion at the end of 2-3 since I can’t carry 250…Oh…I can go in party, leave, and get it out of the bank. Ah, well…mystery solved, if not happily. Thanks, all!
Yeah…I know all that. I’ve got the first purse. I should be able to carry 500 on both, but I came in at 305, went through the whole first section, and still only had 305 after killing everything, looting the hidden rooms and destroying the shop. I’m not so much farming baubles as just having a ball and (dare I admit) giggling a lot! But I was surprised to not get the credit. They pick them up, but the count doesn’t go up and they aren’t showing in the pack. Sigh…. I’ve reported to anet, but if it’s just me, I doubt there’s anything they can do about it. I’ll see how it goes after reset, I guess.
Did I miss something? I thought that you could go in on infantile as many times as you wanted, but I just took both my accounts in to get some dailies on baby1-1 and none of the baubles are adding to my inventory. Can you only get rewards the first time through? I thought I got them yesterday and I completed baby-mode in world 1 the first day. That would really suck pond water…
I can truly understand, if you want to go after a legendary, wishing that the special effects that went along with it conformed to your aesthetic, but to expect any company to satisfy all the different taste buds out there is really asking a bit much, IMO, so I won’t even address that except to say that Legendaries’ effects are some of the pure fluff of the game. I say, let the designers have some fun, since they’re giving us so much.
However, on the issue of the different bows…to say that the short is ineffectual probably means that you (as I did for almost two years) have never really investigated its possibilities. I run several rangers (I like creating characters and have one of each species and at least one of each profession) but ran them all as power/crit rangers. Then…I really got into my condi-necro and began to appreciate the power of condi, when well-traited. I’ve switched one of my rangers over to over to condi, and she mows stuff down in HoT and fractals, and I’ve not really begun to investigate skill rotations—-just seat of the pants key punching. Her bar breakers are more effective than the power knockback in many instances. She’s basically midrange, which is really effective in HoT. Before you diss it, try a true condi build. I wish I’d known two years ago what I know now. I’d play her far more effectively.
I also like the fact that playing the different types requires different strategies. Keeps me on my toes! It also means I have options in WvW and Fractals, depending on the party/squad makeup. The Power Ranger LB/GS is probably the most versatile profession in the game, with true sniping capacity and real melee damage. Running with the axe/warhorn rather than the greatsword means less melee damage, but better midrange. But a power traiting isn’t really taking advantage of the poison in the axe. That’s where the condi-ranger can blossom.
Basically, they’re trying to differentiate between mindsets and body types. A ranger that works long range, with the power to pull that longbow, has to have the muscle to wield a greatsword effectively. One that’s based on poison and fire damage can be lighter and quicker. The poison weapon does less damage initially, but just watch those little green numbers add up and you’ll realize what’s really going on.
I carry both a long and a short on every ranger now. Sometimes you just need that sniping distance. But the traiting and armor and weapons are very different. Both are killer, and I really don’t understand the animosity toward rangers in the game. (Now…for my druid…)
This thread begs the real question. I’ve had problems with the program on one machine since the last update. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and it didn’t solve the downloading problem. I uninstalled again and went into regedit to see if it really did a clean uninstall and there were still gw2 registry entries I’m not guru enough to grok. Does anyone know how to actually strip the system so I can start again? Right now I’m reduced to playing on my laptop. :*( Not optimal!
Yipppeeee!
Hey, thanks! Shows you what I know. Just searched in the wrong forum.
Dare I ask…just how loud are you playing this game? 8-0 I’m kinda going deaf just thinking about it!
Personally, I kinda like the pyrotechnics of a character learning something new. Sometimes, my character even does a little dance for them.
OTOH…as one of those likely guilty of same…I shall out of deference to all the above and those they represent…move someplace else. Definitely not necessary to do it in public!

I mean, REALLY! C’mon AN, get real. That’s a HARD puzzle and a low level trait. Lots of people never come close to mastering the jumping. I’m a fairly good jumper and what I’ve seen on YouTube is extremely intimidating. Young characters wanting that low level trait haven’t got a chance against the alt-world enemies I’ve encountered every time I’ve tried to go in.
In all seriousness, every time I look to assign traits to one of my new characters, I’m increasingly bothered by the cost of earning certain traits in this new system. I mean…100% on Dredgehaunt for a first level trait? I know people who have been playing the game for two years who still can’t get that jumping puzzle vista.
I prefer not to buy the traits, not because of the money aspect, altho on a new account that w/b prohibitive, but because I like the challenge of earning them—-I think of it as tracking my character’s development—-and buying them feels a bit like cheating. Unfortunately, the earning-cost of some of these is ridiculous, often requiring participation in game aspects which are notorious for attracting bad behavior from PUGs. Few people are lucky enough to get with a group of trusted individuals to achieve these goals. I’ve tried LFG a couple of times with completely disastrous results.
Had I not fallen in love with the game using the previous trait system, I fear I would not continue playing because advancing in this fundamental aspect is completely unreasonable for someone having to play solo. I LIKE the earn-trait concept, just not the balance of trait level to requirement.
I’D LIKE TO SUGGEST: to AN: Give us options, perhaps one line strictly PvE (not including dungeons), the other WvW/Dungeon. Perhaps make it so we choose which rather than mix and match, but make it possible to play the game without having to count on strangers who might well take advantage of you—-or fighting/killing other players. Not all of us like that idea. Traits are basic to a character build, regardless of game play.
While you’re at it…options in event maps would make dailies a whole lot more appealing. I’m getting pretty tired of spending my limited playing time bouncing around maps all my characters cleared months ago looking for events that are over in ten seconds or a lousy tree, rather than working toward BTDT with every character.
If you want to welcome new people into the game and keep them playing, the extant system is not, IMO the optimal way to do it. GW2 is my personal intro to MMO, as well as several people I’ve come to know through the game, and when I began playing, I felt as if I could play a long time in PvE and ease into the other aspects of the game as I grew more confident in my game play. After a year of playing many different characters and skill sets, having several 80’s level characters…I personally feel intimidated by this new system. I can only imagine how complete newcomers will feel.
If you’re a member of a guild, you can probably find some compatibles in there that will help you get that final chapter. We’re just about to do that.
As for the question…This is probably TMI, but you did ask…
I’ve been playing a year and I’ve got characters of all species and professions and try to mix the story lines so that I don’t repeat more than is inevitable. I love the fancy mental footwork of shifting from one to the other. I’ve got 80s in most professions and am closing in on 80 for the other two.
My original favorite was rangers and I still love them. You never really run solo, the pet can act as a warrior or guardian and keep the enemy stationary while you snipe from a distance. Plus it’s fun collecting the pets.
SUGGESTION TO ARENA NET: How about making pets one of the collections for all characters? That w/b so cool…
I’ve got four rangers and wish I’d made one of each species rather than two humans, a Sylvari and an Asura, but oh, well. I got a new account with the sale that’s going to be all mesmers (probably Asura, because they jump so well) so that if I have friends (or a character in my other account) who need help getting from point a to point b, they can put down that handy-dandy portal.
Count at the moment: professions: 4 rangers, 3 mesmers, 1 of everything else. Species: 2 humans, 1 Norn, 1 Charr, 3 sylvari, 5 Asura.
I started out with a couple of human characters, but as I’ve played, I’ve grown fond of all of the species. My least favorite is probably the Norn, because while the stories are totally appropriate, they don’t particularly appeal to me. Also, even tho they cover distance as fast as any species, they feel to me as if they lumber. They look human but take fewer strides because their strides are longer. Consequently, the rhythm is just ssllooww. The Charr are as large or larger, but park the weapon and they go into that wonderful cat-leap run, which to me is fun (and appeals to the jump more than run side of me). the Sylvari have grown on me, with their philosophy, tho I still find most of the Sylvari female characters total ditses. My favorite these days are, curiously enough, the last species I tried, i.e. the Asura. They’re delightfully snarky, they feel as if they’re moving fast because their short legs have to churn to keep up, which I like, and if I’ve had a hard day, they inevitably make me smile.
And watching them stomp something like a wurm hole is worth the price of admission!
Just another vote for paying for armor repair rather than WP costs, especially with the new daily map-specific event problem. Events are over in a fraction of the time and if you don’t bampf, you stand little chance of getting in on the action. I’m already spending far too much time every day in maps every one of my characters cleared in the first month I played just to get the daily…which I consider a fun specific goal and part of the game as it’s designed to be played, so please don’t say I don’t have to do the daily.
If WP were free, I could play smarter and not die, which I tend to do anyway, and I could spend the time taking out a baddie slowly rather than running across country one more time because I don’t have the spare cash.
I know there are ways of farming to make money, but I not only don’t have that kind of time, I don’t have the interest. I want to play the game, not play games. (There’s nothing quite as rude as a dedicated farming group who bad mouths you for actually completing an event. Finish an event? Heavens, must I be thinking?)
I want to run a variety of characters. I want to explore all the life stories and races and types. I want them ALL to get BTDT… and ultimately, I want to make ascended gear. That means saving the money. Obviously, perfection from my POV w/b free repair AND bampfing, but I’d settle in a heartbeat for paying for repair and free bampfs.
Bottom line, I don’t have a lot of spare time to game and I want to maximize game play.
Anyway…FWIW, that’s my take.
I just got a second account, because I love bringing up the babies and the variations on the life stories….but I’m really confused. I’ve got my first character up to 11, so I know the display of certain game aspects is delayed. I’ve opened PoI and Vistas on the world map…but I’m not getting the world map completion info and the display of how many vista/heart/poi/skill points I’ve gotten for the current map. This is REALLY frustrating. I’ve looked around for toggles to switch it on and off, but I’m not finding anything.
I think this c/b really frustrating to new players, so if this is a deliberate change, ANet…I think you made a booboo with that one.
Just some thoughts for those still having trouble with the bell choir. (Don’t ask how long it took me to figure this out!)
1) You REALLY need to get the directly overhead viewpoint. If you’re viewing from the side, the moment the dots hit the blue is not clear.
2) Position your hands on the keyboard number keys as if you’re playing the piano.
3) wait for the dot to actually enter the blue before striking the keyboard key.
4) I might be wrong on this one, but it seems to me that you have to wait for the “new event” banner before talking to the snowman for a part. Try to position yourself at a spot without people waiting, then wait for that banner to appear.
5) I generally play with the sound off, so it’s perfectly possible to do this with video alone. Wasn’t even aware there was a metronome! Gotta try it with sound.
6) Remember…it’s a game! Have fun!
If the idea is to attract people to some of the other arenas, they should do something more about balancing experience. My first try at PvP was with an 80 ranger. I tried to get people to strategize/give advice beforehand and got nothing. I got into the game , was instantly deserted, and was obviously pegged as a newbie by the other team and was constantly swarmed. I’ve tried a few other times with the exact same experience. If the want people to venture in, they need to do something more about balancing experience.
As for the traits system…I’d like it better if there was a way to choose PvE/PvP/WvW as the basis for earning a trait. Yeah, I could buy the traits I want… I’ve been playing long enough I have the funds and know pretty much what I want for a class, but as with the dailies, it’s the challenge of going after that trait that makes it fun for me.
I have to say again that AN seems to be catering exclusively to the AP-accumulation players and those of us who play for personal achievement, not points, are having to do all the bending.
I love bring up baby characters. I have those “instant level 20” things and wish I could sell them. I’ll never use them. The trouble is, while they’ve changed the trait thing to make it MUCH harder to get, they’ve cheapened the game play in the lower levels, making it too easy. IMO, of course.
It’s DEFINITELY more restrictive. I would argue that the choice in question is not so much in the basic requirement, i.e. events vs gathering, it’s the choice within the requirement, i.e. the specific map and even the specific boss. The way it is now, if every character you have has a given map, you can’t even fill out map while getting the event requirement, if you can’t be up during the time a certain boss is active, that choice is taken away. It’s increasingly geared toward the players whose PRIMARY interest, rather than secondary interest, is the reward. I have 12 characters who are in varying stages of development. I want to be able to run the one I feel like running not the one AN has arbitrarily decided I should run.
While acknowledging it’s not my thread, it’s not the number of options I’m talking about when I use the word choice…it’s choice of game play.
You could argue I can run whatever character I choose and ignore the daily, but that in itself is taking away options, thereby taking away choices.

I’d like to address one issue first: the idea that if you’re not an AP hunter, there’s no point in discussing this. Some of us just like the challenge and sense of accomplishment of completing an offered part of the game. I like the bennies, but, except for the laurels, it’s not why I do them. The same way I don’t half-do events just to get the credit for it, leaving other players to complete it for me—- I “invest” in the game and my “obligation” to the NPC I’ve promised to help—-I take the dailies as one more part of the game. As I say, it gives me a daily sense of accomplishment. I know, from others I play with, I’m not the only one who feels this way.
That having been said, IMO, there are several major problems with the new system. First…if you have limited playing time, and you want the dailies for whatever reason, that limited playing time is being dictated by AN. A corollary to this is, if you are trying to bring up a baby and the dailies are aimed at your top characters, then you’re forced to either play your big guy or get the daily.
I guess I play in off times because the way people are finding events in the designated maps, i.e. following game chat or looking for commanders, isn’t helping at all. If anything does show up there, by the time I can bampf and run to the spot (and I’ve chosen characters with 100% of the given map) the event is over. I spend all my time chasing around the map looking for things, or wandering around an area I know will eventually spawn one. Corollary to this…if it’s a time when the map is populated, attendance at a given event is so high, you’re lucky to get a bronze with a high-powered character, let along even ping the badies with a baby.
Are the chests nice? Yes. But if you go after the dailies mainly because it’s one of the fun parts of playing the game, not because you’re obsessed with the goodies, this new system has seriously undermined a major fun part of the game.
To the person (I’m very sorry. Can’t see the message screen from here) who said something about the way it used to be…having to get 8 out of 8 for a daily….I’ve only been playing a year, but I’ve never seen that. When I started tracking the daily, it was 5 out of 8 for PvE (My preferred playing method.) Those 5 could be accomplished by any character I happened to be running in an appropriate level of any given area. That choice has been steadily eroded just in that one year of playing.
I can only see one way for this new system to be remotely fair to those of us who like running characters of all levels and have limited playing time. If, as I’ve been told is the case, the dailies adjust for the level of your highest character, at the very least, they should adjust the dailies for the character you happen to be running at any given moment…which would be, it seems to me, a bloody nightmare of programming.
I know they’re trying to get people to play all the maps, and I will say, I’ve been able to do a couple of events I’ve never done before because of lack of people in a given map and lack of communication among those who are there, but that’s just not enough to offset the negative effect this new structure has had on the rest of my playing enjoyment.
