IGN review of HoT

I agree with somethings IGN says but mostly I disagree. Let me explain.

Is HoT empty. Nooo, the LFG tool is right there and I’ve never seen it be utilized so much. If you are still looking for others to play with, ask someone in your guild.

Their mastery system is great with each mastery I’ve mastered, I’ve felt transversing the jungle has gotten easier as I’ve leveled up. I’m at a point now were I’m itching for more mastery points.

If they shouldve knock anything, it should have been the story, I understand that Season 3 is coming but, that had such a great opportunity to fully explain why the elder dragons rose. They havent even hinted at the fact that they are apart of the world, and destroying them will unbalance the chain.

I still feel that I’ve gotten my money’s worth but there was no twist. Everyone knew who was going to die. I even ruined the story for myself my completing it before doing the final meta event. Which made things a bit clearer once I eventually participated in the event. Overall the story was ok. They can do better.

Arenanet did an awesome job, there are many more things to do (some things recycled, but a betterment of the system), and they are adding more in the coming weeks.

Give it 3 months and then we can slam a verdict down.

Hey guys, you have to buy the recipe from the laurel merchant. There’s bag tab that specifically houses unlocked recipes.

Chrono Rune doesn't work.

Hiya Arena,

Great job on HoT, it’s amazing. I have a small slight concern with the 6th bonus on the Chrono Rune. The duration of the quickness doesn’t stack when you cast wells. That rune is supposed to be about moving fast but it actually slows the casting of the wells down because I have to wait until the current quickness duration ends so that I could apply the sixth bonus again.

In plain terms, it’s a wasted bonus if I can’t stack the quickness. The wells already cast fast and the incentive was that you could cast them faster with the possibility of casting other skills faster. If there was a disclaimer telling you that quickness doesn’t stack then I would have no fight here it clearly says on the wiki below the quickness description “Duration”.

But maybe the quickness is just running out faster than I can notice. Could someone key in on this.

Other than that, great job. Thanks for your time.

Stop whining everyone. This is not awful; it’s called ELITE for a reason. It improves your class. You are not just unlocking an elite specialization; you are unlocking armor skins, sigils, and new runes.

You guys wanted good content, I understand them not wanting everyone to easily spec into their elite automatically. The whole idea of the expansion is playing the expansion and I believe that there is fear that the more content that they take away from HoT the less you will want to play it. They want to pack this thing to the brim, so that you won’t have to rush through.

If I were them, I would had found a way to include some lore questing to unlock your elite.

DO NOT CHANGE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ELITE SPEC.

That’s the thing. This announcement will cause players to rush through the content. Because they want to play fully unlocked elite specs on day 1.

They will ignore events that aren’t around hero challenges. They will not care about the player asking for help with a group event. Because they want to fully unlock their elite. They will rush through the maps hunting for hero challenges. They will ruin the joy of exploring the map for the first time to get their elite fully unlocked.

You’re speaking for yourself, I don’t want to do that. Yeah, I have 200 hero points to spend on the elite, so it’s not a biggy for me. But if you played the beta, you will find out that those hero points, are tricky to get. Content is content, no matter how you play it. And obtaining hero points isn’t exactly rushing through the game because you forget that there is a storyline that probably has restrictions due to the mastery system; so you will have to allocate time to that. Parts of HoT may be tricky to get to without certain masteries. So yes they might try to rush but eventually they will hit a wall. And please lets not forget about WvW, you can get points from that too.

Unlocking your elite spec is a training line in your training panel that costs hero points. You do need to have trained all the existing training lines before you’re allowed to put hero points into your elite spec.

If you’ve got all the hero points in the existing game you’ll have enough to train about half the elite specialization training line on launch day. The rest you’ll need to earn in the jungle or via the new system Tyler outlined yesterday from WvW. The number of points to fully train your elite spec is higher than other training lines – but hero challenges in the jungle are worth 10 points each, so it’s not actually as big as it appears.

Terribly, awfully, grindy, Colin.

I have a main with 100% everything (accomplished under the old must-do-WvW system), have had for a while. Locking her elite spec behing monumental grind is not good or fun.

I have 2 other characters at about 75% world completion. I’m not about to grind them, and my main, through thousands of hours of repetitive content just to get an elite spec I PAID FOR.

I have a life. Guild Wars 2 is recreation, not my life.

We will not be buying the expansion for two other (wife, daughter) accounts in this house.

I regret buying the expansion for myself.

Nice playing your game while it was fun. Now that it’s “grind wars”, we’re off to brighter pastures. Not a rage quit, a simple anti-grind viewpoint.

The game will still be here when you get back. There is nothing grindy about this. Im done with this “grind” idea. Yes, its supposed to be hard to get things in this game, it makes you appreciate the time it took you to get those things. Just chill out, and play when you can.

You guys, just wait and see. Save some mystery for the game, if you are truly a vet player, how hard could this possibly be ? Its a week away; patience is of virtue.

Calm down. Unlocking your elite spec might actually have something to do with the story of HoT. It might be actually fun. You guys get on here and complain about everything, just let some mystery be had about the game.

BETA: What we are enjoying

I really want to start this statement off with, " Great Job Arenanet." I played the beta this weekend quite frequently, I can’t give a whole and concluding statement about HoT fully because it was such a small portion. But I will give my opinion about some quality of gameplay and map impressions.

I want to start off with the Elite Specialization Reaper. The specialization consisted of skills that had too much power. I used rampager’s armor and trinkets for the added condition damage and superior runes of might for the extra power. I’ve seen a lot of players complain about there not being enough condition damage or not enough conditions lasting a good length of time. But to that defense I say that the necromancer recieved a weapon that deals damage based on power not conditions. Chill is quite enough, I actually believe that it’s too much. We are trudging on the territory of heavy armor classes, with the invulnerable shroud. Not only do we not take damage but the Reaper’s Shroud does incredible amounts of damage; Executioner’s Scythe combo-ed with Soul Spiral can level the playing field of ten enemies. A warrior or even the revenent does not have this much power.

This rest of the main hand skills are awesome Grasping Darkness coupled with Nightfall is just wonderful.

The shouts on the other hand can use some re-thinking, I didn’t feel as if they fitted well with the reaper. More importantly I didn’t want use them because I had so much power at my disposal, I just used the damage dealing wells instead. The only shout that was wonderful was “Chilled to the bone.” Maybe you guys should play with the idea of actually using the shouts as self damage but party wide support skills. A great example of this is GW1 necromancer skill “Blood is Power.” There should be more chances taken; rely on degen. Its done in the silverwaste when the putrid vines emerge and it was done when you got too close to the colossal vine. Use those mechanics for skills. That’s all I have for the necromancer of the top of my head.

Now for the map.

Do not change the difficultly, if anything, make it more difficult. Even though the chain events were super fun, I started to find that with every new refresh of the chained meta events, things started to become more intuitive and easier to play (even though players didn’t understand the mechanics of the vinetenders). Make the Modrem go up and protect the Vinetenders, give them some ability to snipe us; fight fire vs fire. Make the Hylek, sabotage our plans of stealing the wyvern eggs. Engage the enemy more, they shouldnt just sit there and wait. The reason why I reiterate this so much is because after just the third time of doing Laranthir’s event meta chain. Not only were we successful but we had ample daytime to spare.

For the nighttime phase, simply make the enemies more tougher, I didn’t feel terror at night. It was actually more easier during the nighttime. I really can’t say much about night, because the bottom biome might be terror at night.

That’s all I have, great job Arena. Make it harder.
