Closing the gap between casuals & hardcore

I’m a casual player, and quite frankly we don’t deserve legendaries. For all the good reasons already listed above.

More importantly, we don’t NEED legendaries to do any high-level content. That’s the difference between GW2 and most other MMOs. As a former hardcore vanilla WoW raider, I NEEDED to grind out 400 fire resist gear to do Molten Core, or I would get 1-shot and possibly wipe my entire 40 man raid team. No gear = No play. A legendary is just visual eye candy for the most dedicatedplayers of the game (and lucky, but that’s another kettle of fish). A casual player neither deserves nor needs one. Which is a GOOD thing.

There in lies the rub.
According to definition in this thread hardcore means x hours of play a day and casual means less than 3 hours.
By definition only younger players with a lot of time on their hands can ever be hardcore. I have no problem with that since I am a casual player that also has litle mine to play.
The bolded part is what i have a problem with.
Just because I am a casual player does not mean I am not a dedicated player. GW2 is the only game I play atm, I spend most of my free time playing it. I have an 80, in full exotics/ 61% map exploration and 3 alts between lvl20-30. I have 3 crafting profession at 400 and the rest between 100-250.
I have bought bankslots, black lion salvage kits, and fine trans stones and a halloween costume from the store with real money.
So I consider myself a dedicated GW2 player, same goes for my husband. We have been playing since the betas.

Now as it stands, ever earning a legendary might as well require me to hike to the moon because that is exactly as achievable.
I would dearly love the Bifrost- it will take me several years to get it- if ever.
So yes I support the OP’s idea, that will at least give me and people like me a chance.

I understand your arguments and your lack of time to play due to real life obligations that prevents you to achieving your content of desire which is Bifrost. But making legendary easily attainable would essentially (as mentioned by above poster) make the appeal of a legendary diminish. The reason people desire legendary is because it is one of the highest badge of honor this game has to offer. If everyone can achieve it so easily, then it just becomes nothing more than a white item. I find your statement of how a legendary would take you 7 years very intriguing. Seeing as the dungeon rewards are revamped quite a bit to amplify the gold received. A typical full run of AC normally takes me around 1-1.5 hours depending on my group and nets a nice 3g. That is pretty casual friendly time frame.

I have read many posts on this forums and it seems that a lot of the more “casual players” prefer to have a shot at the legendary by doing what they enjoy which is exploring and having fun in their own way. I am not saying there is anything wrong with different people having different play style, but one should embrace the consequence of ones’ choice. Just because you chose to causally play at your own pace and style does not necessary mean you should receive the same amount of reward for “hardcore players” who chose to utilize their game time to grind for their respected goal. I don’t see how legendary will affect your skills in a game such as guild wars 2 where the stats are capped.

The other repercussion of daily mats reward, would be impact on the already limited economy. OP argued that giving a few mats will not affect the economy as a whole since the amount will be so small. But consider the amount of players guild wars has, multiplied those mats by the player base and we will have a very very big issues. Op might argue that he/she will not be selling those mats he will get from daily, but can he say the same for the entire player base?

The best solution is for Anet to implemented new methods of getting ascended gears like dungeon reward or even temple events; instead of the one and only method that purely requires mystic forge recipe.

Just my 2cent.

TL;DR

Daily mats will just kill the already feeble economy. Daily mats reward * Player base = terrible idea.

@Archer

I understand your zealous to get the legendary but having it devalue because you want it does not make good a economy.

Archer, if I recall correctly FoW armor did indeed involve RNG on Ectos and Obby shards. Before the implementations end chest in FoW and UW, people would just spend countless times farming those mats, I believe the chances of those to drop were .04% or 4% not sure which.

After a while, everyone had FoW armor with chaos gloves as a perma sin. Now how is that not stale looking at basically an exact copy of yourself? Then the meta shift went towards having a BDS and other weapons like Obby blade and Crystalline Swords to distinguish yourself, which the RNG was ridiculously low.

However, these weapons had no impact on the effectiveness of your character. These are just prestige skins that shows that you have dedicated more time and tenacity that exceed others to achieve it. That is how these legendary should be, they are just a flashy skin that does the exact same damage as exotics, they have no impact on a character’s effectiveness what so ever except that you can show it off to other people. But if everyone has one, doesn’t that diminishes a legendary’s value and allure? Its scarcity that makes items have value, the reason the price of the precursor is so much is because everyone wants one.

That is what you call demand. Demand is good and necessary to instigate a healthy economy. That being said, here is what where Anet drop the ball on two accounts that has created uneven skew demand in the current game:

First offence, is allowing Legendary weapons to even exist in Alpha and Closed Beta. This creates an information advantage to all the testers. I don’t see why they couldn’t simply tested Legendary weapons in-house among the development team.

Second offence, is “Karma Gate”, I applaud Anet for banning the exploiters, however, they reinstated those accounts on a good faith system. I am fine with letting those exploiters back into the game, but everything they own should have been wiped clean. Instead, we have individuals who exploit the system that “could”
drastically affect the market by instating a cartel like monopoly. (DeBeers anyone?)

We really wish the someone would address these two issue I mentioned, as the community deserves some explanation.

I think the main problem currently is the lack of gold available to players. I can think of 2 ways to mitigate some of the issues.

1) Lower the scaling on repair and way point cost. I understand there needs to be a way to take out the gold in the game, but the cost of these are so ridiculous as you hit higher levels it shackles many to even be able to accumulate wealth. By lowering the cost, it would even encourage players to spread more evenly on all maps, rather than event campers at Orr. One can only do Orr certain amount of times before puking.

2) Higher chance at rares or even exotics after hard events or dungeons. Temples, Dragon events, ect. This could address the issues of precursor as well, by having a higher chance to get them as drops from accomplishing an epic task. Basically more difficult the event the higher chance at exotics. This could potentially killed ecto price though but I think people are more happy with this arrangement.

Just my two cent.

I’m not surprised your friend didn’t get a precursor. From what I’ve read on this forum and on guru, the chance seems to be 0.2% from rares and 1% from exotics. This means 500 attempts (2000 rares) or 100 attempts (400 exotics) depending on which route you take to guarantee that you get one precursor.

Your friend put in 300 rares (75 attempts) and 200 exotics (50 attempts). So really, he only gave himself a 15% chance to get a precursor when he combined his rares and a 50% chance of getting it when combining his exotics. So overall, he only had a 65% chance of getting a precursor. Maybe a little more if the weapons he got out of it were used for further attempts.

I hope my math is correct.

I am not a statistician so I can’t fully comment, but I am certain that your formula for calculation is wrong. There is no cumulative chance of success based on the number tries. I believe we might need a Normal Distribution curve to calculate the chance.
Again, I am not a statistician so I might be totally wrong on the right statistic formula, I hope a statistician can compile this data and give us a more valid chance as well as graphs.

1) When did your friend do this test?
2) How many exotics came out of putting 300 rares into the Forge?

1) 3 Weeks ago
2) He only got 10 exotics out of it

Yea, in the real world, we have the SEC doing moderation. Granted, they are not the best at it. I know many would say that this is a game and we should not compare it to real life, but when everything in this game is designed to nickle and dime you to death it does take away significantly from the fun factor.

What I believe should have happen was the exclusion of legendary till official launch. I have no idea how giving select few even a smidgen of idea how to get the most desired item in the game advanced info would be a good idea.

Also during the Karma exploiter scandal, although many of those exploiters were banned, however their accounts were given back to them on a “good faith” system. Anet expect these exploiter to have learned their lesson and will delete their ill gotten goods themselves. That is totally asinine and these exploiters should have had their account wiped clean forcibly. Now, it creates an environment where the wealthy can control the market just from pure manipulation.

So, I have a friend who during the first weeks of the game, learned a neat trick on the trading post to make gold. Basically what he did was a test which ending up netting him 900 gold.

The method of doing it was like this:

He would put out Buy orders of 30s for exotic armors that were level 70 and then he would purchase mystic forge stones from the gem store. Mystic forge stones act a substitute for some items in the mystic forge.
Now, he only did this with armor as it is random as to what type of item you will get, however if you put 3 armor pieces you will get an armor piece back, and since armor is desired by every class, you would always make money. If you tried this with weapons, you might get a trident or speargun which is much less desirable.

So after you put the items in the MF there is a high chance of getting a level 80 exotic back, so what he did was sell these exotics for 5-10g, thus netting him large sums of profit, and he did this for days until he reached 900g and above.

Now that the explanation is out the way, let’s go on to the test he did. Basically, he purchased 300 level 80 rare greatswords, and 200 level 80 exotic greatswords, and took them to the mystic forge.

Now you might say he is crazy, but he heard about how people were having issues getting the precursor and wanted to do a large scale test, to see the results. He’s got everything he could possibly want(commander, precursors, etc.) So what else could he possibly need the gold for anyways?!

So after putting all of the swords in, he didn’t get a single Dawn or Dusk back. Now, I don’t know about the rest of you, but after putting 500 greatswords in the Mystic Forge, and not getting a precursor back, I think I would have probably quit the game if I did not have back-up gold and various luxuries as he does.

With that out of the way, I would also like to bring up another subject. I’ve been doing some digging around, and it turns out a few of the people who made legendary, in particular technically the first legendary. These players were alpha testers, or closed beta testers.

So they knew before the game even launched, on how to get the precursors.
The only thing arena-net changed was how to get the “gifts” so that was the only thing they didn’t know about.

With that said, I would like to leave you all with the following attachment of a Image I found while scouring the internet, where a single person has multiple precursors in their inventory through god knows what type of method.
I hope through this thread everyone gains a bit more knowledge about the chances of getting one of these precursors(Extremely, Extremely, Extremely Hard) and rather than wasting their time throwing weapons in the forge, just spend months saving their gold as the price gradually goes up for them over time!

P.S Here is the link to thread where an alpha tester breaks NDA, and explains that he knew how to get the weapon before everyone else.

He edited out to say he only played during BWE3, but if you read down you can still see the quoted post where he says he was an alpha tester.
