Okay: I understand that everyone is angry about this, myself included.
That said, I think there are other sides worth considering.
First: What if the tutorial stuff were optional?
Second, what if ANet combined the old system of getting weapon skills and the new one? If you use one weapon enough, like previously, you get more skills, but after level 10 you have all the skills on weapons you’ve never used before.
Third: Downed state should (In my opinion) be fully unlocked as it used to be. That was a pretty bad move. That said, locking the third skill, while really annoying, doesn’t affect the game much. I don’t know about anyone else, but I barely ever use it on non-ranger characters.
Fourth: If you were to make the tutorial optional, (And I cannot stress this enough) Give new characters a choice from the start. That way, vets can go without, people from other MMOs can try the game without the tutorial, and new players who aren’t confident can go through it. DO NOT put the “Disable tutorial” button hidden somewhere in the options menu.
Does anybody else have any suggested fixes for the rather poor changes this patch?
Here are my thoughts regarding the level-up system, based on what I’ve seen in this thread. I have not actually made a new character and tried it, but from what I’ve heard:
Firstly: The Asura Gates.
Forgive me if I’m misinformed, but somebody said the Asura gates unlock at level 18? WHY? Has anybody except me created a new character to play with a friend whose character is a different race? I think they have, which begs the question of why ANet thinks it’s a good idea to stop you meeting eachother until you’ve alread spent 1-2 hours grinding!
When I first started the game, I didn’t know about the Gates! I had to run all the way from Rata Sum to Hoelbrak, dodging every monster on the way because it would insta-kill me. And now, that’s Required?
Secondly: The Level-Up System.
Don’t get me wrong, speeding leveling up at lower levels actually kind of needed to be done. But this concept of “Rewarding” people for leveling up by taking away what they used to have is kittening stupid. If a guy takes your watch and then promises to give it back to you if you answer three riddles, he’s not rewarding you, he’s stealing from you.
And you can BET that ANet will start selling Level 20 Scrolls in the Gemstore so that you can skip past this bullkitten. (If they don’t already, never checked) If the guy gives you an option to skip the riddles for £5, He is still stealing from you.
Thirdly: The Mentality
Ohhhhhh boy…. I’d bet money that this is just the first step in a headlong tumble to near Dungeon-Keeper (Mobile) levels of locking. In this, ANet has pulled an EA. Even if they roll back the “Features” they’ve added to the leveling system, I am not sure I will play again, and I’ll sure as hell never give them more money. Not until they earn my trust back, because this…. This displays a wanton disregard for the community by ANet. As somebody said “We’re not players, we’re wallets”, which is exactly how I think ANet sees us now. I could be wrong. I hope I am wrong. But ANet has taken GW2 one step closer to generic MMOs, the very thing I got GW2 because it was not.
Fourth: The Idea
I understand that they thought they needed a tutorial. Maybe they do. But making veteran players have to go through it as well is not cool. I could understand if they perhaps gave new players a tutorial, and maybe put them at level 5 or 10 at the end. But locking skills, locking Downed skills, locking Underwater skills…. ANet has not added content with this patch, they’ve removed it. Some people may say “Oh, it only takes about an hour of play to get to level 10!”, but I say “You mean it takes me an hour to get all my weapon skills?” The old system used to be a bit of a pain to get the fifth skills, but this is far worse. It never took an hour. In fact, I’ve never liked that Weapon-Swapping was locked, but I guess we didn’t jump on that fast enough, because it’s spread like a cancer. Remove it, ANet. Please, for the good of the veteran community, remove the compulsery grinding for things we used to have and love, because you are killing said community.
