The ground here speaks to me
Of a time we have not forgotten
Around my feet lies questions unasked
Yet the ash answers swiftly to unmask
The war and battle we fought in
And what this city used to be
Kids running about, no end to be neared
You’d hear them shout, “Your face is weird”
Those were the only troubles
And the adults would just laugh
Now this place is just rubble
And it’s citizens gassed
But the ground still talks
Refusing to end this conversation
Of conservation for our past
Not allowing me to just walk…away
How could I? This place we called home
And I wasn’t alone, not once
But months it’s been, waging this war
That at its core, could shrivel up
If just one person would die
But is there a better judge and jury than I?
The ground is down to whispers
And it slowly coo’s my name
Kneeling now, playing with its game
The sound comes to its sole listener
With the city’s last words embedded in heart
I started off from where I knelt
And it felt as though leaded feet were mine
As I saw my friends and family dying
Just lying there with death grasping
Them gasping to be helped
Taking who we could, we made off
Away from the crumbling lion
No one shall forget that day
When mother and child were crying
And with the ash and cooling ember
We remember for what it once stood
Should we have again
Scarlet in our sight
Have understood then
Fear not this night
