I’d have to say best thief I fought against was a JQ thief using P/D or D/P not sure which it was. But they put alot of bleeds on me and I didn’t have conditional removal at the time so it was harsh. I was able to get up again though and finish them off. Flame thrower don’t care about stealth =) So there’s ways/builds to defeat thieves, many people just don’t use them.
so OP’s complaint about the class seems to be not so much the class sucks but more like its not his playing style and now he is too lazy to do another character.
Ummmm…
No.
The engineer IS my play style, only the tools the profession gets are either substandard, bugged, or over-n-erfed.
Since making this thread I finished my thief, have it geared out with 3 full sets of exotic gear and weapons, experimenting with weapon sets.
Knowing the engineer profession as well as I do makes engineers easy kills as I can spot what they are able to do and counter accordingly.
That said I built my engineer to counter thieves, but the truth of the matter is that an average player on a thief can give fits to the exemplary player on an engineer. Hence the reason for this thread.
I advise you to re-read the original post..
I have only played my thief to level 14 so I can not speak too much on that. I am however a lvl 80 engie with multiple exotics sets as well. I almost always wear my full beserker with the flame runes, to increase burning dmg and damage against burning targets. My traits are in 30 firearms, 30 elixirs, and 10 in the first one =) I run with the flame thrower kit and rifle off hand. Using this as a skeleton I’ve not died to a thief yet. I was downed once by a good d/p thief since I didn’t have condition removal up. Aside from that I really enjoy the class and what it has to offer. Maybe it’s because my build is one of the viable few, but I have to say I disagree with engineer being bad. I love it =) Flame on!
Since I love sharing my opinion =) I believe culling needs to be addressed and fixed before thieves stealth should be touched. Their impact in wvwvw is minimal compared to over-all objective, well except dolyaks. I myself found using engineer with flamethrower/rifle w/ alchemy is a great way to counter thieves if you are that worried about them. Otherwise I recommend traveling with a group and plan accordingly. By the way my thief is only level 14 and don’t play him much =) Remember this game has multiple classes/builds; don’t be afraid to experiment and learn new things!
Insanemaniac,
I have to disagree, my flame thrower engineer does well:
1.) Damage:
My #1 attack does 1,500-2,000 direct dmg from a full stream to all the targets it hits. This is followed by a burn for some more dmg.
My #2 attack does 3-5k dmg upon exploding
Traits that give me ability to cause vulnerability for each crit & cause burning.
Runes that take advantage of burning.
2.) CC:
Flame thrower #3 – Frontal knock back
Flame thrower #5 – AoE Blind
Rifle #4 – Frontal AoE knockback and gain distance
3.) Surival:
Traits that decrease cool down on elixirs allowing me to re-use them frequently.
Trait turning my small and breaking CC when at 25% for a few seconds.
Also elixir to break CC and turn me invul for a fwe seconds.
Elixir to give turn all conditions to boons.
Ability to throw elixirs and remove conditions.
Racial (Sylvari) plant a’bunch of turrets giving me more dmg in my area and also giving me those extra seconds of invul.
Now I apologize for being too lazy to look up the elixir names and I realize the sylvari elite isn’t engineeer specific, but the point I am making is that maybe some builds are broken now. Though definitely not all and I consider engineer to be a class to be reconded with.
Insanemaniac really? I’ll have to take a gander at the forums. I just dusted off my engie the past day and didn’t have any trouble in wvwvw. I think mainly since my build was buffed slightly with the sigil in regards how I play and I haven’t seen any negatives tot he nerfs. Thanks for the heads up I’ll check it out.
I’m biased in I think engineers are awesome, but I recommend an engineer. You can have permanent swiftness up with kit switching and good surviability from potions. There is also many CC options, myself when I use rifle/flame thrower.
^^ I believe SmokeyNYY has hit the nail on the head and I concurr.
SmokeyNYY is correct there are tons of these threads and I believe they will continue. Venting is healthy and if something constructive does come up then all the better. One counter I’ve not seen mention is flame thrower engineer. I believe thieves are fine and culling needs to be fixed. I believe that people shouldn’t be traveling alone in WvWvW and there are counters to thieves. My Flamethrower engineer has little problems with thieves. So if you are unable to counter a thief with your current class/build and insist on traveling without protection then I recommend trying a flame thrower engineer with firearms and alchemy maxed. Great CC, damage,a nd you don’t need to target anything =) Merry Xmas to everyone.
