I’m getting the same issue after not playing the game for some weeks. Some months ago had the same problem (it was after a major game update) and in the end gave up trying to fix it. A few more game updates and everything was peachy again, no more blackscreen. I recommend just sitting it out for a while, trying the game again in a week or two and hope the updates fix the issue. My theory is that the guilty updates caused the game to use more memory than could be used by my 32 bit OS installation (Win XP) so it crashed.
Can’t really help you as GW2 is currently unplayable for me after the most recent patches. However… be warned, hard booting your PC a number of times a day is a very good way of knackering your hard drive, over time.
I just tried deleting that DAT file and did get back into the game but after 5 minutes or so the game froze and the colours went all wonky – as if the graphics drivers had crashed. Managed to alt-tab out of the freeze and close the game down. The desktop however was normal and the graphics driver hadn’t crashed at all.
Completely baffled.
Win XP 32 bit with a GTS 250.
My girlfriend has the same issue right now. Had the typical 32-bit out of memory crashes before the patch, now the client won’t start at all. She’ll probably stop playing if we don’t find a way around it (and no, reinstalling the operating system is not an acceptable solution). She has Windows XP 32 bit. Tried using the /3GB switch, didn’t make any difference.
I’ve been playing the game for about 80 hours with no sign of running out of memory, then can’t even get into the game after the latest update. Considering my OS has been the most stable it’s ever been, reinstalling it is unacceptable at this point for me too.
Whatever that latest update did has screwed things up big time and could spell the end of me playing it. Oh well, at least I’ll get more sleep.
Very annoying though.
I’m experiencing exactly the same problems as Cael described above, only it won’t even let me restart or close down the computer normally – have to do a hard boot instead. This is after the latest big update a few hours ago. Playing on Win XP 32 bit with a GTS 250 card. I play plenty of Bethesda games that are heavily modded and never experience anything quite like this, just a straightforward ctd at worst. It sounds like it’s a massive memory leak and the devs have no idea how to plug it.
Very disappointing.
