Is your system set to run 3d when a 3d program starts? If you have updated drivers recently sometimes you need to re-enable it in nvidia control panel.
Works for me on start up with gtx460 and a 3d vision 1 set up (and it works very well too!)

A pentium or i3 with a modest video card is likely to be much better. The game really likes a fast cpu.
