Mammals do NOT require live birth! The egg laying platypus being the most obvious example, but there are 4 others.
They do require: neocortex, mammary glands, warm blooded.
Nor do the mammary glands need to be prominent, humans are the only primate that has large mammary glands. (and they are just for show on Sylvari)
This is a weird, angry thread.
That is why you don’t discuss sex in polite company. Even if it is a mythical race in a video game..
Any sufficiently advanced magic/technology is indistinguishable from stupidity." – Master of Chaos, The Breakers of Things, on world ending research.
Here in Lake Wobegon, all the Asura are above average.
It is nice to see one of my back stories, which has a reference to a Asura “institution” for Idiots, turns out to be true!
What? Why not?
Haven’t you heard of insects who lay their young in other species? The insects larvae eat the eggs to reach the next phase of development.
There is also Brood Parasitism, where one bird deposits it’s eggs in another nest, where it pushes the other chicks out of the nest.
This is a little different. Obviously the “joey” or the Asura female can breach the egg shell with enzymes (reptile eggs are soft and leathery, not a hard shell like a chicken) and repair the breach. A Red kangaroo is the size and weight of a Norn, 6’7" and 200lbs, yet the Joey is the size of a jelly bean at birth. So that makes the Asura “joey” even smaller, say a ladybug.
The “Joey” is now free to consume the contents of the egg from the inside.
Sick, gross, brutal and kinda funny in a way…
a sick, gross and brutal way.
Zhaitan: I am feeling better! I think I will go for a walk.
Zojja: You’re not fooling anyone, you know.
Zhiatan: I feel happy. I feel happy!
Oh, I am sure it is true….
I have altered my suggested method to incorporate the stated lore:
They give live birth to a very small “joey” like a marsupial. The Joey is deposited into the egg, where it consumes the occupant and/or the yolk and white depending on the stage of the egg.
The Asura Progeny then break free after developing the characteristic sharp teeth.
In the distant past before Asura were fully sentient, the egg was probably left with the other eggs in the nest, providing the Progeny a handy first meal when the Progeny broke free from the egg.
Much less boring, and does not conflict with the lore, and explains the lack of developed mammary glands on female Asura.
Personally, it all seems so… flat.
They are not tiny humans, nor miniature norn.
Don’t limit them to something a blah as live birth or laying eggs… no, they are far more competitive and interesting than that.
The Asura (IMHO) should reproduce by collecting the egg of a large egglaying creatures such as the Raptor, Drake, Moa or even Destroyer.
Replacing the egg’s embryo with their own offspring, the Progeny develops inside the hijacked egg until it can break free.. shortly after the teeth have developed.
P.S. This could still work within the Lore as stated. Like a marsupial, they could give live birth to a very underdeveloped “joey” that invades the egg and finishes developing there.
In the distant past, before Asura became fully sentient, I suspect the embryo would be deposited and then abandoned. Strong Progeny would then consume the rest of the nest mates before heading out to seek out other prey.
On a whim, I brought up Asura death rituals.
Asura cremate their dead.
We see this in GW1 EotN when Vekk scatters Gadd’s ashes, and in the book Edge of Destiny when Zojja angrily orders Eir to put down Snaff’s body so she can cremate him.
Nah… he was just a little over done.
I am sticking with egg theory so I can disturb people in RP.
Or I could just be pulling their leg…
Leo G’s first one reminds me of Pris (Darryl Hannah) from Bladerunner and Second looks like Trinity!
Another “disturbing” ritual for Asura: Birthing.
I have postulated that they hatch from eggs, but do not lay eggs themselves.
Instead, they collect eggs from larger creatures such as Moa, River Drakes and Raptors and… ah… replaces/consumes the existing embro/yolk with their own genetic material.
The Asura then develops and hatches normally in a four month period. I suspect in the past the Asura hatchling would then make a meal of it’s raptor/moa/drake nestmates. Now they are raised in an incubator and tended by golems.
I suppose the sort of egg used might have an effect on the outcome of the Asura hatch-ling. =)
Sylvari have to eat something, being able to move and think is going to take a lot of energy, more that can be provided by photosynthesis.
Well, never underestimate the value of a well crushed kneecap!
Secondly, the axe whirlwind animation is worth every second of being a warrior.
On a whim, I brought up Asura death rituals.
Humans have graveyards, I suspect Norns do ships, cairns, or burn their dead, and Charr probably a sky burial where they place the corpse on a scaffold or tree to let the birds take them… or possibly just kick a little sand over them so they don’t stink up the place. Sylvari? Woodchipper for sure, mulched and returned to the Grove.
Ausurans, initially living underground and having limited farming options (and apparently no molars) have Meatloaf Monday, and occasionally Taco Tuesday. Waste not, want not, and hey quality protein is quality protein from a logical standpoint.
Suitably grossed out the other RPers, so I am sticking with it.
