Wow, awesome….so much good advice in this thread!! Thanks to everybody!!! I appreciate you guys taking the time to write all of this up.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure if solo queue was just a cluster and filled with people headhunting instead of playing objectives (which is what it felt like at times) or if I was just a hot mess and was playing it all wrong and being a noob. lol. Probably more of the latter….but it sounds like team arena is more promising in terms of getting people that will work together. I guess that shouldn’t come as a shock.

Again, awesome advice though. I had no idea about using the minimap to ping/draw. And I’ll make it a point to get more vocal about what is happening in-game.

I’ll have to try out a few different builds as well. I can tell from your posts that there are tons of nuances that I am completely missing. And, actually, I think my biggest takeaway is that it’s pretty critical to experiment with each class and get a feel for what they can do. Right now I have a very limited idea of what other professions are doing against me. And I know there’s no holy trinity in this game…but I’m also getting the feeling that even all of the DPS classes are played very differently and effective with different things. Which is actually awesome

Anyways, thanks again! I am really liking this game, although it seems pretty difficult to jump into. There’s not much hand-holding for noobs, so it seems the expectation is to rely on experimentation, other helpful people on forums and in guilds, and community resources. Or maybe I’m just getting old and not picking things up as quickly as I used to. LOL!!

I feel like I’m really struggling with sPvP in this game. I have been rolling an offensive guardian build (http://tinyurl.com/k2ehzxr) and I think that – in general – I am doing alright with it in 1v1 situations. So I don’t think that I have a terrible build or that I don’t understand what my skills are or anything like that.

I think I’m at about a 30% win rate (mostly solo queue) and those are usually landslides, which tell me that I’m probably being carried to some extent. I don’t know. It just seems that I keep finding myself defending points in 1v3 situations, defending points and seeing nobody for extended periods of time, or roaming and constantly fighting in 1v2 or 1v3 situations. Sometimes I’m just scratching my head because I’ll be trying to cap and I’ll get jumped by 2 or 3 opponents…..but we’ll still control zero other points on the map. So I sit there wondering what the heck everybody else is doing. I don’t know. I’m getting the feeling that I’m doing something wrong here

I’m curious if anybody has any resources that helped you improve that you could share with me. I’m not new to MMO pvp (been playing wow BGs since vanilla and 3v3 arenas since burning crusade) but I’m still very fresh to GW2 and I know I have a lot to learn yet

Thanks!!

Hi guys!

Long time wow player here, switching over to check out Guild Wars 2. I was enticed by the 50% off deal….and warcraft growing pretty stale…and I don’t know how I slept on this game for so long!

My main interest in wow was in Arenas, Ranked Battlegrounds, and Random Battlegrounds, so I’m really looking forward to getting into the PvP aspect of this game. Hoping to find an active guild that is noob-friendly and likes to run groups for sPvP and wPvP.

I’m in central time zone and usually play a few hours during the week and then pretty regularly on weekends.

I talked a couple of buddies into picking this up as well so hopefully I’ll also have a few more like-minded guys looking to join up.

Thanks!!

Awesome, you guys all rock! Thanks so much for all the help!

I’ll have to do some reading about the different worlds and maybe check a few out. I didn’t realize that they have their own sites. I’ll also have to do some reading on Bloodlust….not quite sure what that is yet.

Excited to be a part of the game….can’t believe I slept on this one for so long. It sounds awesome

Welcome to WvW. Blackgate is the top server in the America’s so you are going to have large queue times during peak usage. If you want to pop some WvW without queue times then go for the Edge of the Mists. Just hit the “B” button to bring up the WvW menu and enter that map. That will send you on a instanced map with other random joins. Also go for the Borderlands for your opponents or Eternal Battlegrounds. Normally your home Borderland (most important) is always full.

You can transfer to a lower tier server but there is a cost, yes. My recommendation for straight PvP is to also go to Heart of the Mists. Either way, for a new person Edge of the Mists and Heart of the Mists should be your first stop to learn PvP.

Thanks for the advice!

Blackgate is probably the most populated server at the moment, so it might not be your best interest to be on this server if you’re an American player. You also entered during a tournament season of WvW, so queues are artificially high compared to the ‘off season’. Tier 1 and Tier 2 have different mindsets when it comes to WvW though, so do a bit of reading and research and decide which tier you want to be in.

Anyway, not recommended to enter WvW at level 10. You’re lacking traits/runes/sigils to be able to compete well, especially since you’re new to the game. Try out the sPvP mode first to learn your class’ mechanics and builds

Also, CC chaining is also the name of the game here. It’s just a lot easier to get out of with cleansing/stun break/stability/dodging

Right, but any recommendations as to what to read / research to get some good info? As I said, a lot of what I’m finding is old.

And yes, I was just getting into WvW at level 10 to see what it was like. Not to compete.

I’m hoping that CC chaining isn’t as garbage in this game as it is in wow…or at least as garbage as wow will continue to be until they remove some instant CC and reduce the diminishing return categories in 6.0.

Hello!

I picked up Guild Wars 2 a few days ago and I’m wondering if somebody would mind helping me out with understanding the current state of WvW and server population and how this all works. I’m a long time WoW player and a huge fan of PvP. GW2 caught my eye the other day when I started to read about world versus world….and it sounded awesome.

I ended up choosing Blackgate as my server since it seemed like the general recommendation for PvP-focused players is to pick an active tier 1 server. I got to level 10 on my first character and figured I’d queue up for WvW just for the heck of it to see what it was like….and proceeded to sit in queue for about 25 minutes before bailing.

I guess I’m maybe rethinking the server choice…was Blackgate a bad idea? Is it better / more fun to pick a tier 2 server? Are queue times usually high for WvW?

Sorry if these questions are asked a lot around here. I did some searching but was only finding old topics and I wasn’t sure how relevant they are.

I had pretty high hopes that pvp would be fun in this game. WoW is killing me with the endless CC chains and 15+ minute queue times for BGs in my battlegroups.

The whole concept of “pick a world and that’s the only one you can play on unless you pay money to transfer” in GW2 is pretty foreign to me. I’m all paranoid that I will pick the “wrong” one. lol. I figure since I’m only level 10 I can at least delete my character and start over with only losing a few hours of playing

Thanks for the help!!
