Hey guys – I’m not entirely sure why connecting directly to the modem has resolved the issue for some players, but if you’re still getting the black screen issue I am curious if anyone could test this so I can see how many other players are able to resolve this issue in this fashion.
As far as I know, there are at least 2 different “black screen” issues.
One where the user can still open menu by clicking F11 – this one seems to be fixed by connecting directly to the modem.
A different black screen comes from the display driver crash, and seems to affect mostly, but not exclusively, Nvidia users.
I also have this black screen issue caused by the Nvidia display driver crash. Sometimes the screen stays black 1 or 2 seconds before coming back to the games, other times it stays black and I have to alt-tab to get a GW2 error window (“Guild Wars 2 has encountered an unrecoverable graphics driver error and must terminate.”), but this does not generate an error log.
First, here is my specs (I play on a laptop):
i7 -2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHZ
GTX 560m
6GB DDR3
Windows 7 64
GW2 is the first game in which I encountered this black screen / driver crash issue.
Like the OP, I tried various stuff with little to no effect. Multiple clean install of different drivers, anti-aliasing deactivation, full-screen windowed mode, etc.
I have also used MSI Afterburner to monitor my GPU usage and temperature and ruled out an overheating problem
Here is a list of things I noticed however:
- playing in High settings increases the frequency of the black screens (almost unplayable)
- playing in Low settings decreases the frequency of the black screens (already played up to 1 or 2 hours without any driver crash)
- vistas always trigger a driver crash, even multiple crashes resulting in the “unrecoverable error” (by the way, according to MSI Afterburner, my GPU usage drops from ~70% to ~30% during vistas, and then the driver crashes). When I say always, it’s really always. I’m lvl 80 and have not been able to see ONE vista completely without having a black screen or two, or even a crash.
- cutscenes also trigger the driver crashes most of the times, but not always
- when I play on battery mode, the issue disappears (because its the integrated graphics card which is being used and not my GTX560 I guess)
