I think I figured out the problem… loaded into BIOS and saw that my CPU was running at a blistering 91 degrees o_o . I had recently transplanted the heatsink and CPU into a new motherboard, so I started to suspect maybe my hardware wasn’t seated properly. Adjusted, and as a test I underclocked the CPU several multipliers to get it to at least stay under 70 and the game is running smoothly so far, on auto-detect settings. Ordered a new heatsink and fan though, heh. Thanks for the help guys.

Hey, stutters came back and taking a look at the GPU-Z readings, temperature is fine at 40C but it appears that the memory clock is near capacity judging by the red bar? Could this be a culprit of the problem?

Beldin, thanks for the handy app. The GPU is running at x16, scaled down to 2.0 to match the 2.0 pcie slot, although the slot itself changes from 2.0 to 1.1 I noticed. I’ll have a closer look at the readings later today to see if anything is abnormal.

I’ve been getting a “lurching” graphics effect which has gotten worse since the release of HoT. I will start out at a constant FPS (around 60 fps outside of cities, as low as 30 in new or populated areas) and after less than a minute playing, the framerate will dip, say, to 50, back up to 60, down to 40, back up to 60, etc intermittently, this stuttering effect occurring once every 1 – 5 seconds. Sometimes it will disappear for up to 30 seconds and run smooth but it always comes back. This occurs in all areas of the game, even at lowest graphical settings. It’s not network related as ping is consistently low, hovering around 100 and my wife runs the game smooth on the same connection. She also noted that she was watching me lurch though, if that is indicative of anything.
I’ve tried updated GPU drivers and tweaking settings in the NVIDIA control panel towards performance as suggested by the ANet help on the topic.
I would be perfectly content if the framerate was consistently low, but to have it constantly lurch makes gameplay headache-inducing, and especially frustrating for jumping puzzles!
Has anyone experienced this issue or know a way to mitigate it? Knowing that Guild Wars 2 is CPU, do you think upgrading to an i7 processor would help?
Specs:
Intel Core i5-4440 @ 3.10GHz
8GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 (pci-e 3.0 in a 2.0 slot, though I looked it up and this should be extremely negligible on performance)
Windows 10 64-bit
Hey, I just wanted to drop you guys a note, ANet, to thank you for work. I’m currently living away from my PC and only have my old laptop with me. It was until recently that GW2 was unplayable on my low end HP laptop due to extremely low frame rates and lag and I would only be able to log on to grab the daily login bonus, but recently I logged in to find I was getting a muuh better rate, and only fractional input lag, a marked improvement! I was even able to easily do a jumping puzzle! So yeah, I’m not sure what you did but the improvement is noticed, thank you!
“I am in no mood” , such indignation! There are so many other things to do in GW than hang about the forums and bemoan a bug. Personally, not being an ArenaNet developer and not having the full picture of the situation, I’m not about to start jumping to conclusions about what the developers should or shouldn’t do to solve it.
