This has happened to me several times now. First time being about a year ago, but it has now recently occurred much more frequently. From my experiences, a reinstall always solves this problem (for me). But I do not want to reinstall the game every time I play the game, as it keeps happening more often and a reinstall is very time consuming. Repair never worked for me. One time it worked to guest a different server with that stuck character. That way I could successfully load the map. But this does not work at all times unfortunately. I know this problem is on Arenanet’s end, and I hope that they can put this problem on a high priority fix list somewhere ASAP as more and more people seem to talk about this same problem here on the forums. I also think that the similar problem in the original Guild Wars (GW1), as well as the issues with the slow download of the game is related to this one somehow. I do not know how or why, but they all have the connection related issue in common and it was stated somewhere that the original Guild Wars servers are kept at the same place as the Guild Wars 2 servers.

I have the same issue, I tried to reinstall the game because both of my lvl 80 characters were stuck in Lion’s Arch… every time i tried to load LA with any character I would simply get disconnected with a message saying that the connection was not good enough (that character would also get stuck in LA). Now that I am reinstalling it keeps turning itself off, stating that there is some connection error. I suspect that these two issues are related.
If they are related, Anet is aware of the problem and they are working on solving it atm.
Edit: It seems to work for a short period of time if you keep restarting the client and that way download maybe 5,000 files at a time. But ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!

Urgh… I have the exact same issue! Is it solved for you yet? I’ve tried to run repair but that one character is still stuck… :/ I can see how much I’ve explored the area though, but then the client just crashes..
