Still not sure which to pick :/
Why does Anet make such stupid decisions all the time?
Man I am stuck and have been for the last couple days.
Honestly cannot decide between these 2 races.
I’m not super keen on the Sylvari animations, but I already have a Charr Guardian (80), who admittedly is 99% PvE.
On the other hand I’m worried that a Charr Warrior will stick out like a sore thumb and get insta-targeted just because he’s so easy to click on.
I did play through personal story on my Guardian but IRL interruptions kept me from really playing through it at a timely pace…
So I actually want to play the Personal Story Arcs for BOTH of these races. :x
I’m assuming there’s no Racial Skill advantage here…
I’m just STUCK! >< Would really appreciate any advice you guys can give me. Thanks very much in advance!
In on GW2 appreciation thread.
Only been here for about the past ~8 months as well.
Absolutely love the personal story, especially the voice acting. I will definitely be excited when the last quest doesn’t require a party to complete.
Dungeons / Queue finder are very fun and very well done. I do wish they had a couple more cinematics in front of dungeons, like they did for Ascalonian Catacombs. Thought that one was kittening epic the first time I saw it.
I know a lot of people have their gripes but I actually do like the economy for the most part. I like the scarcity of gold, especially coming from games like WoW where everyone has a ridiculous amount of it.
Gem store is pretty sweet too, doesn’t drive people away who don’t have much cash to burn.
Absolutely LOVE the graphics and the gameplay. Holy kitten. The game is BEAUTIFUL in my opinion, even 2+ years after release. I also really like the artwork and the music.
Combat is so much fun. Not having holy trinity makes end game content so much more challenging and engaging. I don’t know how to explain it but mechanics are so smooth and intuitive. Fast-paced and hella polished… It’s like they created a perfect marriage between hack and slash and skill-based RPG’s.
Overall I’d easily give the game a 9/10. It has been an awesome ride, and I can’t wait for HoT to drop.
IF YOU’RE READING THIS ANET THE NEW DAILY REWARDS SUCK
10 Achievement points? Great it’ll only take me 4 months to get 1k points!
Writs of experience are pointless, crap PvP rewards; just why? Chest of Lumber/Ore… you gotta be kidding me right?
The only good reward is from the World Boss.
I DO REALLY like the Login rewards, but right now there is absolutely no incentive for most players to do the Daily Quests themselves.
Either change it back or up the amount of Achievement Points! (15-20 would be perfect!)

I really didn’t think the story was that bad.
Loved the voice acting and cutscenes that were in the game.
I also think the Elder Dragons r pretty kittening sweet.
Wow.
First let me just say I’m overwhelmed by all the awesome responses in this thread. Reminds me of what an amicable community GW2 really can be, which is rare and amazing in the grand scheme of multiplayer games.
Just wanted to say thank you all for taking the time to comment, especially those who wrote suggestions. (And to the few exceptions, we all know getting the name you want is no picnic, so don’t even try to pin it all on me.)
I did manage to come up with some fairly awesome names, though. And even though the hours upon HOURS staring at the character creation screen trying to think of a kitten name is frustrating to the max, the scarcity of high quality names definitely makes you feel like you’ve got something really special when you find one that isn’t taken.
Anyway, just wanted to say I appreciate it guys. Oh and sorry it took me so long to write back. I don’t really frequent the forums that often and I got caught up with some IRL stuffs along the way.
Laters :]

is keeping me from enjoying the game…
This is brutal. EVERYTHING is taken. I’m one of those rare breeds who, admittedly, is rather OCD about charcter creation. I’ll spend hours getting my appearance just right, but even more important to me is my character’s name.
If I’m not in love with my character’s name, I get such a bad taste in my mouth when I go to level, and I inevitably become severely disheartened and lose interest. That toon will never see 80. :[
When I find a name I love, on the other hand, it’s pretty much guaranteed that I’ll steamroll the game all the way to max level and keep right on going. Totally immersed and fulfilled by every minute of the experience.
I can’t be the only person that feels this way. It just sucks. :[
…
Maybe I should just ditch the puns and come up with a “xxx Wyrmsbane” name instead.Edit: I’m thinking about the first name “Rancor” as a fitting star wars reference/crossover. Would anyone be willing to rate this and possibly give ideas for a solid surname?
As much as I prefer lore-appropriate names, my first warrior is Spaiten Malus, so I can’t be too much of a hypocrite. :P (Post-hoc and canonically, his full name is Spaiten Maluscrack, Malus warband, so named for him breaking his hammer over his former legionnaire’s domepiece, but I digress.)
Names
Charr first names often have names based off of their culture (e.g., Pyre, Ember, Forge). Along with this male names are also sharp sounding with the consonants (e.g., using D, R, T, G, K, etc. used in names like Rytlock, Gron, Dinky) whereas female names are smoother (e.g., using C, L, S, Z, etc. such as names like Bathea, Kalla, Elexus); both genders often start with a sharp consonant though, but this is just generally and exceptions to this do exist. Some charr use Roman or Greek (inspired) names as well.Charr surnames consist of two words put together, one of which (either suffix or prefix) denoting the warband of the individual (e.g., Rytlock Brimstone is of the Stone warband and Scylla Rustcloud of the Rust warband). Charr individuals generally get to pick variations of their surnames within the forming of their first warband which express their personality, ideals or history, though some limitations may apply.
Members of the same warband can also have their warband name in different order than other members of their warband, though this is rare – some examples include Lightbringer Swordshatter and Legionnaire Bloodsword of the Sword warband, and Vitus Silverpick of the Pick warband (where all other warband members have Pick as the prefix of their surnames).
Charr names are fairly visceral overall, sometimes Roman-inspired. So, “Rancor” fits reasonably well for a Charr. One part of the surname is the warband name, so using the above as an example, either the Wyrm warband or Bane warband. (Position doesn’t matter too much, but is usually consistent between ‘bandmates.) From a lore/RP perspective, this is where you get to do some of your storytelling.
Would he be in the Wyrm warband because that’s a preferred target or they identify with some aspect of the creature? Is it the Bane warband because they are doom to whatever crosses them?
Wyrm ’bandmates: Wyrmbane, Wyrmkiller, Wyrmspite, Burywyrm, etc.
Bane ’bandmates: Wyrmbane, Dragonbane, Flamebane, Aetherbane, etc.
Lots of little inspirations.Lengthy, but I hope it helps, and welcome to the Legions!
Thank you so much for the info, it seriously helped me hone in on what a befitting Charr name should be. After some research I found that there are no wyrms in gw2, only wurms and dragons. I don’t know if that would break immersion but I’ve shied away for the moment.
Also, even though Rancor sounds good on paper it’s not as strong in practice. As much as I like the name, it doesn’t come off as well in chat. “hi rancor, you want to join?” or “hey ran” for short :cringe:
Swami has been my go-to alias in RP games over the past few years, but I feel like it’s a little light/flimsy for a Charr. Since Guru is in the same vane and sounds much more Charr-like, I’ve decided to go with that as a first name.
I typed a bunch of names into a list which helped narrow it down a lot. The survivors are:
Guru Wyrmwarden
Guru Soulsage
I’m leaning towards “Soulsage” since my character is a Guardian, but I’m not sure.
Sorry for hijacking the thread but I didn’t really know where else to put this. I’m the kind of person that will spend hours on end picking out a good name. It’s been 2 full days and I basically won’t allow myself to enjoy the game (let alone grind to 80) until I have a name that I love. :[
Really appreciate anybody who takes the time to read this mess (OCD to the max). It means more to me than you know. <.<

Doesn’t fit the R/Pish vibe as much but I like it. Instead of critical strike it’s critical scratch. x] 6-7/10
I just got the game a few days ago and I have been totally stuck on coming up with a decent Charr name. Stumbled across this thread so hopefully it will help.
Right now it’s Claws And Effect
I like it but I’m not totally sold…
Maybe I should just ditch the puns and come up with a “xxx Wyrmsbane” name instead.
Edit: I’m thinking about the first name “Rancor” as a fitting star wars reference/crossover. Would anyone be willing to rate this and possibly give ideas for a solid surname?

Hey all, I’m a new player trying to figure out a good server to start on. Blackgate and TC are too full so I’ve narrowed it down to these 2 servers. Just wondering which one I should go with?
I appreciate any and all info on this topic, thanks guys. :]
The game won’t let me create a character on Tarnished Coast or Blackgate. I can start on Jade Quarry, though, and I hear it’s a good server for PvP. Are Dragonbrand or Yak’s Bend any good? I don’t know what to do :[
Blackgate or Tarnished Coast if you like PvE.
Jade Quarry if you like WvW
It won’t let me start on Blackgate or TC, the “Transfer” box is grayed out, and when I roll my cursor over it just says “The World you have selected is full.”
I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to Jade Quarry, Dragonbrand, Stormbluff Isle and Yak’s Bend.
which server****
I’m on Ferguson’s Crossing right now, but even the name denotes non-premiere associations. I’ve heard that Blackgate is nearly full – especially during prime time – and it will only let me log in as a “Guest”? Which of the “Very High” servers are preferred? I would really really appreciate some input here….
HOW MANY MORE PAGES OF THIS DO YOU NEED?
CHANGE IT BACK ANET.
I think doing the personal story your first time through is a great way to experience the game, but open world content is a big part of it, epecially since now new characters can unlock traits for free by exploring locations and defeating zone bosses, which is a really fun concept. Map completion also gives great rewards and is required if you want to craft a legendary weapon, a big goal of players at endgame, so starting it a long the way to 80 is very helpful!
Other than that if you want to level fast and efficiently but not really immerse yourself in the game, you can hop into the edge of the mists and run with the karma train for easy levels and badges of honor (for easy gear at 80). Other than that, I recomend doing your dailys/monthlys so you can be a nice and shiny ascended amulet (power, prec and ferocity stats are ideal) for when you hit 80 (30 laurels or 20+500 badges of honor if bought in WvW). Then I would also reccomend getting into fractals if you have the interest, since they are the best source of easy ascended rings and the grindiest but cheapest way to get 20 slot bags and an ascended backpiece. Joining a nice established guild on your server will net you ways to complete guild missions easily, for an ascended accessory every 2 weeks.
Once you accumulate enough gold through just having fun at 80, I’d recommend getting into crafting ascended weapons/armors or working on a legendary weapon. Other than that play however you want to play, theres so much to do for a new player at 80, from pvp to wvw to dungeons and experiencing all of the game’s content, and all of that content is very much accessible for new players as long as they can communicate and are willing to practice and learn.
Feel free to whisper me in game (Phaedra Lotus and Lady Svedka are my mains) and I can answer any questions you may have about anything and offer any advice. I can also teach you the easier dungeon paths once you reach the level they require.
I read every word! Thank you very much for taking the time to write that out, seriously. I really appreciate it. I think I have a good idea about how I’ll go about leveling now. I will definitely take you up on your offer and PM you if I get stuck. :}

Just wander around and try anything that sounds fun to you. You get leveled by just about everything you do, so there’s no wrong way:
Heart quests – These are ok and the experience is decent.
Map exploration – This gives a pretty decent amount of experience for just getting waypoints and points of interest. Opening up waypoints will be useful later, particularly if you join a guild and do Guild Missions.
WvW – I would recommend waiting a bit before jumping in this. You get leveled up to 80, but you don’t have a large number of skills and traits to help you until later. If you do jump in without being 80, just try to find a big zerg group and stick with them.
sPvP – Your level doesn’t matter at all for this, although I believe you may not have all the skills/traits open at first. You don’t gain experience from doing sPvP, but Tomes of Knowledge are rewards which are frequently granted and these can be used to instantly level your character 1 level.
Dungeons – Finding a group for players below level 80 can be a bit tough since so much of the player base now focuses on just taking geared 80s for speed runs, but these can be a lot of fun. Your first dungeon gets unlocked at level 80 (Ascalon Catacombs – Story Mode) and this can be a nice way to get into some more engaging PvE combat if you find a good group. The LFG tool can help you find a pick-up-group, but I recommend joining a guild with new player-friendly people who enjoy running dungeons if you want to do this.
Awesome info, man. Thanks very much for spelling that all out, I will definitely follow these tips.

Do everything, clear maps by doing hearts poi’s vistas, do every event you run into, and keep up with your personal story. For people playing GW2 first time, its super fun and there’s a ton to do, so do it all. There’s no best way to level unless you already have a level 80 and are trying to power level alts. For your first toon to 80 just do everything thats in front of you.
Will do man, sounds like solid advice. Thanks for the response. (y)
Thanks for all the input, guys, I really appreciate it. :] As soon as I get my system all set up I’ll be installing.
My only other question would be: How should I go about leveling? I’m not worried about “the fastest” method; on the contrary I’d like to know what’s the best way to “take it all in.”
For reference I just wanted to say I understand how heart quests work, so no need to break that down. I was just wondering if you guys prefer Skyrim-style open world exploration, or if you think I would get a better feel of the game by following the Personal Story.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just would like to know what’s the best way to experience the lore and better understand the game.
Thanks again guys, I’ll see you in game soon. :]

So I bought GW2 back in 2012 when it first launched, but due to personal reasons I was only able to play for a couple of days. I’m off school for the summer and my dusty copy of GW2 is still sitting on the shelf…
Comments on youtube videos have been generally positive, and a solid majority of the people rolling in recommend giving it a try.
I played a lot of LoL over the past year, year and a half, and while it was fun I’m completely burnt out now. I played WoW during vanilla, heavily during TBC and quit like a lot of people did after Cataclysm. I came back for about a month or 2 for Mists, but after so many years staring at the same graphics, I feel like my WoW days are – for the most part – behind me.
The resounding consensus on TESO (a game I was looking forward to) is that the game is bugged all to heck and not currently worth the money. And Wildstar is just not my flavor.
Would it be worth giving GW2 another shot? I basically just want to know if the leveling experience is good and if the game is still fun to play. The last piece of my new PC arrives today and I definitely want to try this game on full blast (highest settings) because the graphics look great. Would you guys recommend a total noob jumping in at this time?
