While I understand that the game is an MMO, to be fair, the game’s story implies a certain level of responsibility and heroism on an individual level that is negated when you tell me that there are other soldiers out there who have achieved everything I’ve achieved within the Pact, but that (despite my rank and importance) I’ve never heard about them until now.
Gameplay elements aside (for the record, it IS a poor design choice to make the ENTIRE story solo, and break the pattern for the climax), this is a terrible direction in terms of story telling and roleplay. I already have had issues with my “personal story” because I don’t have any real control, and I don’t feel like I’m the real hero of the story.
But to now take my character, who is supposed to be a uniquely heroic and powerful individual (within his own story arc) and say to him, “now meet these other heroes of legendary strength and courage who also have risen within the pact, whom you’ve never before heard of despite their incredible acts of valor!” and then send him, as part of a party, into the climax steals away his glory and shoots my story, which is already kind of piecemeal and shaky, full of a bunch of un-neccessary holes.
Incidentally, I recall (but do not have a link, so don’t ask for one) that before release, ANet had clarified that the “story” mode of instances were intended to tell the story of the members of Destiny’s Edge, while the Personal Story told -our- story. shrugs
My point being, my gripe isn’t about difficulty or socialization. It simply breaks immersion for me. There’s no good reason there can’t be a solo personal story climax, and then Arah afterwards. As a previous poster mentioned, he is an Elder Dragon (of undeath, specifically). If Shiro and Khilbron could both conquer death through dark magic and deals with a fallen human god, then it stands to reason that the elder dragon of undeath (purportedly stronger than the human gods) could revive himself somewhere between the end of the personal story and the beginning of the group-oriented Arah… Just food for thought.
