Eyebrow colors

Yep, drives me a little nuts in this game, as well as another big title. However, my grey-haired engineer would look like he had no eyebrows if it was a straight-up color match…

I’d very much like to be able to choose colors separately for hair, eyebrows, and facial hair. Some people might get funky with it, but they can already get plenty funky with armor colors, so I don’t see that as an issue.

Does anyone know who does the VA for Samuel Cuttler (the human preaching about the six gods in Hoelbrak)? Can’t find a credit anywhere, but he sounds a lot like George Coe.

Make no mistake, I definitely appreciate the input; you gave me exactly what I needed to know. I’m just sort of stuck between what’s right but awkward-looking to my non-Icelandic eyes, versus something more stylized and therefore wrong. I’m leaning towards the latter; if it sounds good to my ears, I’m not so concerned about its rightness, but I don’t want it to be so wrong as to lose meaning. If that makes sense.

Ah, was afraid of that. I’d hoped I was missing some compound word or nickname or something that made the grammar easier, but so it goes.

If I used the Swedish “nymånens” (but with “a” instead of “å”), would that sound right enough, or is there a more natural way of saying it (like the Icelandic “hins” thing)?

…man, if I put as much effort into something constructive as I do into making names for fantasy MMOs, I might actually go somewhere…

So, yeah, kind of a weird question, but I’m trying to make a character name that has “of the new moon” in it, and can’t seem to find a direct translation anywhere, either in Old Norse or Icelandic.

I know “nyr” is new and “mani” is moon (so is “tungl,” but I like the connection to the Norse character Mani), but I’m guessing it isn’t as simple as just sticking them together. Is it? Getting all confused with grammar stuff like declensions, adjective-noun agreement, and whether I can make a compound word out of it without making a bigger mess of things.

It also seems that “Nyi” has some connection to the new moon in Old Norse, but it’s too short for my tastes.

Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.

There’s one thing I absolutely loved about TSW when I was in the beta. The starting Illuminati area is copied block-for-block, building-for-building from an actual region in the Bronx.

…and, um, I guess that’s about it… :-/

Guild Wars 2: Best Aprils Fools for an MMO?

The best April Fools stunt I’ve seen was in WoW a few years ago (2008, maybe?), but it’s a little hard to explain. Basically, you’d start the launcher, there’d be a message saying that the servers had been taken offline to fix one of several issues, but that it should have been fixed approximately ten minutes before you started the game. You log in, and you’d get “hit” with precisely that issue in a surreal and sometimes unnerving way. Some examples:

  • If the announcement was about security issues, when you tried to log in you’d get a message saying the account was already logged.
  • Announcement says that there were some stability issues with the chat system? You could log in, everything looks normal, but you’d see names sign in and out of user-made channels at random (along with randomly timed friend and guild notifications). If you tried to use chat, the client would “crash.”
  • Announcement about graphics issues with loading objects? You log in, everything seems normal (no other players), but if you turn around to look behind you, all you’d see is the underlying terrain. No towns, no trees, no mobs, nothing. Turn back around to the direction you were originally facing, and the objects you saw 5 seconds ago were no longer there either.

Took me a couple of tries until I realized I was happening – but then I kept logging in to see all the tricks. Apparently there were several people who never got it; the rage on the forums was epic, even by WoW standards. Couldn’t help answering some of them with “Working as intended”… :p

4/10 – the name “Drums” nearly killed the thread (Is there an inside joke related to your sig?)

Maybe I shouldn’t speak though, since my name butchers all the rules: Markatta Khara. “Markatta” because that’s the name I typically use for fast or stealthy fighters (the character is a thief), and “Khara” because “Markatta” by itself was taken (curse you, Skyrim forums!). It’s supposed to mean “cruel monkey” in Sanskrit but probably doesn’t…

What made you want to play a Sylvari?

Initially I had absolutely zero intention of playing Sylvari. I sort of fell into the race by way of the Thief profession. I had planned to make a human thief, but the more I read up on the class, the more un-human-like it seemed; too many teleports and shadowsteps and other “magical” abilities for a (relatively) mundane race. For my tastes, anyway.

I was just about to give up on the idea of playing a Thief at all, and then I had a flash of insight. The weirdness of the Sylvari seemed to be oddly fitting for the weirdness of the Thief profession – so I mucked about with the character creator, and after a few false starts (just couldn’t get the glow intensity right for the longest time), I’m very happy with the results.

8/10 for Freya Steelhart – good solid Norn name, but it feels like I can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a Freya of some kind or other…

My first character in this game is a Warrior named Thrud Thrymsdottir. Thrud is a Valkyrie and daugher of Thor in Norse mythology, and the Thrym part is inpsired by the Icelandic word “thruma,” meaning “thunder” (couldn’t find an Old Norse word for it).
