Prior to the new system, the rating SoS had it placed in tier 4. With that old rating the new system placed SoS in tier 2. The new system next week now has an even higher chance of placing SoS in tier 2. It doesn’t matter what your rating is when it can skip you over an entire tier. Even with a ratings boost, who’s to say SoS won’t end up in the exact same situation next week? What about a worse one? The system isn’t working when a server that should be tier 3 but currently ranked in tier 4 gets placed in tier 2. With the random element added, it doesn’t matter what your rating is when it’s not what decides your match up any more. Gaining rating just increases the chances this situation will happen again.

First, with this new matchup system we shouldn’t be talking about “Tier #” servers anymore as it makes more sense to discuss things based on rating rank. What you said above is true but you also need to account for how other servers are moving under this system. That’s the nature of a semi-randomized system and the trade you make instead of the previous somewhat stagnant system that trapped servers in tiers.

In the end though isn’t it all a true reflection of a server’s WvW prowess? e.g. two similar lower ranked servers get matched up against higher ranked opponents in separate groupings; one server is resilient and fights their best, the other packs it in. They both come in 3rd in their groupings but the one that fights gains more rating than the one that packs it in. Vise versa applies if you are a high ranked opponent versus lower ranked, you need to win convincingly.

I do agree that a tweak to lessen the variance of the RNG would be a good thing while also incorporating a variable where the more you’ve previously faced a server the less likely you will do so again regardless of how you are supposed to be matched.

#2, the current scheme with RNG element with two tweaks:

1) Tighten up the variance of the RNG element so it’ll be more of a 1-tier shift and only rarely a 2-tier shift but no more than that.

2) Add another variable that makes it so servers that have played each other the past week(s) already will be less likely matched up against each other the following week.

due to the tier 2 servers we’re facing, any effort put out by us will raise our rating and give us more of a chance to potentially fight in tier 1 where we’d get our spit stuffed in even more? A constant losing cycle doesn’t seem like what we should be striving for.

It is true that gaining rating that is added to your True Rating will potentially make it more probable you’ll be matched with higher tier servers next week. However the actual probability of that happening is low due to the nature of RNG randomization variance used for the weekly Matchup Rating. Most likely you’ll be matched up against similar True Rating opponents next week regardless as the True Rating gain/loss is not substantial enough to move rating that dramatically but again that depends on the RNG randomization roll. You just got a tough RNG outcome this week.
